Title: Another Hickory Backed Yellowheart
Post by: Josh on April 05, 2011, 10:38:43 pm
I recently made my Dr. a Hickory backed Yellowheart that I posted back in February, I liked it so much that I had to make myself one.  :)  66"NtN 50# @ 28".  1 3/8ths wide to midlimb to 5/16ths tips.  Handle woods are Padauk, Hickory, Cocobolo, and Yellowheart. Tips are Padauk and Yellowheart. The bow holds around 1.5 inches of reflex. It shoots great and I am really liking this combo... Still got plenty of Yellowheart and Hickory to cut into strips to make different designs with... thinking of trying a R/D next with this combo.  Whaddaya think?  Thanks for looking!  :)

Looks great Josh.  Tiller looks right on, and I like the wood combo.  I don't think I've seen Yellowheart used before, Very cool.

Thanks Eric!

Thank you Elktracker!

Thanks Rick!  I found a place that carries exotic woods and when I saw the yellowheart on the rack I came back home and searched "yellowheart bows"  on the search function of PA.  Only one bow came up and it was done by Marc St. Louis.  I figured if he'd use it then it had to be a pretty decent bow wood.  It is pretty good in compression. I really like it.  :)

Har de Har Har, Tim! ::)  Thanks for the compliment! :D

Thank you Arrowind!

Thanks a bunch Ryan!

Great looking bow.  I have never worked with yellow heart.  I have found a place to get it.  How does it work?  Is it similar to Ipe?

Great job! I too love yellowheart. Excellent in compression, takes very little set. I have one more piece that I am currently working on (if it every stops raining so I can get outside). I will definitely be making more with this combo (hickory  n yellowheart).

That arc is a joy to behold.  Some tillers just make my shoulder relax when I see them.  Thats one.

Thanks Nate!

Thanks beetlebailey!  It is REALLY easy to carve it is very soft and easy on the tools... you have to be careful you don't take off too much during tillering sessions.  Ipe is like twice as hard as this stuff. If you found a place that has it then it is definitely worth picking up some... I have found that the yellow-er the board the denser the wood is too.

Thanks NTProf!  Good luck with yours!

Thank you rossfactor, that was a very nice thing to say.

Thanks Parnell!

Thats a a real nice bow. I really like that yellowheart wood. On your Hickory backings are you using quarter sawn boards or flat grained boards to get your Hickory strips?  Thanks for sharing. Dean

Sweet bow Josh...I've not seen much Yellowheart before this one and I have to admit I like the combo a lot!  I'll need to check some local wood shops and see if they stock any.  Full draw pic ROCKS!
