Montell Williams knaps?  I never knew that......

I've found them made of Edwards, pedernales, rootbeer, amoeba even some stuff I haven't seen before.I don't think they really cared as long as it knapped well.

I think it's real.  Some Texas artifacts look like they were made last week, especially when found where it seldom rains or freezes.

Ok here's my Montell. Made from Pedernales flint from Junction TX. I wanted it to be a little thinner but things didn't seem to work out today. I might try another.

Title: Re: May point challenge?

It' not commen but - have seen one 6" long. Most of the large Montells I've found have been resharpened or broken above the tangs. The avg. Length of the complete ones I've found are about 2.5 to 3 inch

Great points posted...

I have had two that were working out nice, then I broke a tang off. Still trying, but the Rhyolite supply is getting low.

It's never a bad point, it's just a bad flake!  :P

Looks good Patrick! I've got two done but they look like crappola - can't seem to get them bases right. Gonna try again today..
Title: Re: May point challenge?
Post by: cowboy on May 15, 2011, 05:33:27 pm
I QUIT! Not really, won't stop till I get one that's right. Made those two little ugly one's, stalled notches, funky lookin bases, then had one going about right and blew the ears off of it. Hahaha - these things are tougher than I thought. Hats off to you guys that have succesfully finished one ;D.

Tried another Montell and was much happier with the notching. Its not a large point but I liked the way it turned out. It's another Rhyolite beast.. >:D

Got a knapping window today, figured I'd attempt the challenge again.Knocked a spall off a big chunk of glass buttes and thought  "Wow, that's a big chunk, lets see what it makes,Made a tomahawk head. Oh well, I will try the challenge again tomorrow.  '  Frank

nice hawk  ;D
nother piece of pedernales. really happy with the notches on this one , cause notches give me trouble with abo tools. the outer ones were done with an ulna notcher and the inner one an antler punch. snapped the ear when i was taking a few of the last punches out of the center notch. makes it look authentic though
