ok need a quick list of general materials for making of a strike plate for a hickory bow i am making for my brother. i can get just about anything so let me know what materials that will work.
-
leather ;D
-
only time i have anything that resembles astrike pltae on bows that i make
is if i use a floppy rest
other wise never gave it asecond thought
strike plate+side of bow ;) ;D

Don't do rest's very often, but when I do I use self adhesive velcro, the furry side, cut it to shape and stick it on, then take a beard trimmer and shave it short, works great, Bub

leather usually, sometimes a leftover splinter of wood about the size of a tip overlay.
-
same as bubby
-
If you want old fashion, try abalone shell.
-
Lately I've been using snake skin with a thin piece of leather over top of that. It looks good and functions well to.
-
I quite using a strike plate and just use a small piece of soft side adhesive backed velcro now. It's durable, quiet, and super simple. About $3 bucks for a whole package at Wally World.
Use the soft bristle pieces and not the stiff bristles.
-
I glue a small piece of thin leather to the side of the bow, then wrap my grip over that. It just keeps my draw quiet, and if I dont get a perfect release my arrow smacking the side of the bow is not quite as loud :)
-
Antler, turtle shell, different wood, bone. The list is almost endless its just up to your imagination.
-
I use a variation of the floppy rest. The floppy part rests on your index finger so it is just like shooting off of your nuckle but without the feathers imbedding into you hand.

Couple of years ago I trapped my fingernail under a massive ash log, finger end swelled to double its size and of course I lost the nail on that finger. I'm going to use the fingernail from that finger on a bow from that log as a strike plate, seems right somehow ;)

I have used deer hide w/ hair on trimmed REAL short for a strike plate, this is the quietest I've used so far. Other things I've done are some thin shoe leather (not sole) with the rough side out, the soft side of velcro, and felt. The felt was good but it didn't want to stay on very well, kept having to re-glue it every couple of hundred shots.

I always wanted to buy some of those turtle shell guitar picks and see how they work for strike plates.

Hey Nathan, why waste a good fingernail on a strike plate when you can be ultra creative and make something like these out of it...

Here is the style that I have been using on my last few bows. It is quiet and I get good arrow flight off of it. And, it is easy to make. I still need to put the leather handle wrap on it.
