Primitive Get-Together, June 10-12, 6 miles west of Cross Plains, TX on highway 36.
- Held at the Nixon Ranch deer lease. Primitive camping spots available, motel in Cross Plains
- No running water (bring bottled water!), generator power during the day.
- The lease has dirt roads. In light to moderate rain we can park cars near the gate and shuttle people back to camp in 4wd. Heavy rains will cancel the event (we've already received this years heavy rain...knock on wood) :)
- Burn ban will be in effect, will try and get a metal fire pit for campfires.,,wife wants one for the back yard. ;)
- Gas grill available for cooking and I keep a 12" cast iron dutch oven there as well. Bring your own food, or there are a couple restaurants in Cross Plains.
- Limited hog hunting available. Normally hogs are coming to the 4 running feeders and there are 4 rifle box blinds, 2 of which also have bow setups (wind permitting)
- There is sleeping for 4 in double bunk beds, please let me know if you intend to use them. Bring your own bedding/sleeping bag.
- I'll be happy to provide selfbow assistance and hope to receive knapping instruction ;D
Please RSVP to this post with suggestions, discussions on food or format, your plans to attend, etc. This is the first one of these we've done so we're learning as we go.
Thanks, and hope to see you there.

would love to come George...we'll see what happens though...kinda strapped for Moo-Lah right now.... :-[
-
Awesome... ;D
-
I hope you can make it Mike. Might have my night vision scope back from repair by then.
I watched some of your video's over lunch Patrick. Should have done that before last weekend, would have made my feeble rock breaking attempts more productive...
George
-
Yep, I was afraid of that George - my Brazos floating dates. But it's tentative.
-
Diego and I are game..
Paul hope you make it. Patrick, are you gonna go? El Destructor, sure hope you can make it too.. Sterling you too.. Hope to see you all there..
Cipriano

I'll be there... unless work gets in the way. Looks clear right now.
-
Bad weekend for me, Going to Seattle for wedding.
-
Bummer, I was hoping you and Paul could make it. We might have to do it again.
I'm looking forward to it guys. Hope some more guys can make it too.

Thought I'd bring this up to the front to see if anybody else is interested. It is weekend after this one.

Am still canoeing. Always find a bunch of flint in there so can't miss that :).
-
I understand. I need to get some more too. I turned a nice turtleback looking flint spall into a tiny turtleback flint rock tonight. ??? There were moments I thought I was getting the hang of thinning...but no, still just making gravel. I have mastered cutting myself for what that's worth. Anyway, wish you were coming but hard to compete against a combo canoe/flint trip. ;)
I do have my digital night vision scope sighted in on the hog gun and the little DVR is coming tomorrow. If the hogs cooperate we could get some video. Should be fun.

One last bump to see if anybody else can make it. I plan to arrive about 4pm this Friday.
Thanks, George
-
George...me and my buddy Clay were going to try and make It....but we have a turn around scheduled for the next three weeks.....starting Saturday....so maybe next time....
-
Bummer, hopefully we'll do it again.

Think that's what it's going to take is more prep time. Wish i could make it but am slammed - bummer :-\.
-
Probably right, I could have gone with June24 and perhaps should have. But, I wanted to go hog hunting. ;D ;D ;D
We'll try again with more lead time. Gonna be awful hot though. Need to find a place with A/C during the summer. ;)
George
-
Heck, we're used to it. Give me some shade and a log to knapp on....ehem...sit on, and I'm happy. ;D
-
Well, we can sure do that. I may not get back out there until July, but whenever I do I'll post it up.
George
-
Sounds great. Thanks George! For everything!
-
My pleasure, looking forward to tomorrow a lot. ;D

Made it up here today. Met George, Patrick and his twin boys at George's lease. I made gravel out of great flint, Diego beat on all kinds of rock, George made his first points and they looked good. Patrick, well y'all know what me made.. Pure eye candy 8)
In the stand now.. Stickbender my bow has that knife on his hip. Showed it to everyone. Gracias amigo!
-
Cipriano, guess what happened affer you & Diego headed out... One of Patrick's boys walked over by that woodpile between where we were knapping and his truck and started screaming SNAKE! Patrick's going home with a beautiful copperhead skin. He wasn't 10 feet from where we were. Wow!
Lets get a pig now.
George
-
That's crazy!!! What are the odds? ??? I'm a snake magnet I tells you. Just had about a 200 lb white with black spots hog here... He took off before Diego could get a shot
-
Well George is a hog hog ... He killed diego's hog.. ;)
Diego shot at a pesky coon, missed and fell back asleep.. Pesky coon came back, she shot at it and hit it, but coon turned out to be a porcupine!!!! I had no idea they were out here and looked like a coon to me.. I think it's gonna get mounted..
-
I do wish Diego had gotten him. I'd have gotten a couple more hours of sleep. ;) Sure glad one of us got him. Looks like we'll be having fresh pork to go with our beans for lunch. Been a fun get-together. Now if I could just get my points thinner... it'd be perfect.

Alright ,let's have some details on the hog hunt George. Bow,arrow, point ,etc. ????. God Bless
-
Pete I think the broadhead was a Nosler :D
-
Gotta Love Them Nosler ................broadheads............ ;D
-
.. Ya.. That's what I say... Good Nosler broadheads do the trick everytime ;)
-
Especially if they are released out of a 7mm Weatherby Mag............. :P ....... :o
-
Oh,I see. A "primitive " ballistic partition point. ;D God Bless
-
That's right Pete. Good thing too because George shoot it in the rear ;D :D
-
George....You Porked....The Porker.....Man...... >:D
-
;D ;D
OK, first, it was a Barnes broadhead in .308. I did not shoot the porker in the rear, he was steeply quartering away. However, I did use the gutless quartering approach for reasons that were obvious if you were there and smelling him. Tomorrow I'll work on the video, it came out very well, though there is no sound.
We had a great time, you would have enjoyed it Mike. Next time. Patrick was a great teacher and very patient with me. At the end he really spent time helping me learn his indirect percussion method and I had great point going...right up until I broke it. :( :( which was a common theme all weekend. Thanks for everything, we will definitely do it again. Thanks Cipriano for coming and bringing Diego.
Need sleep.

Yikes, I forgot to take any pictures of the knapping... ??? ::) You guys got some I think, Cipriano/Patrick could you post up a picture or 2. Thanks.
And I forgot to mention the flint Patrick brought. Thanks a bunch.
I'll start a new thread in the campfire section to show hog hunting pictures.

Hmmm. .I think Cipriano took some knappin' pictures. I'm uploading a video on photobucket and hopefully we'll be able to watch it soon.
It was definitely something I would like to do again! The real treasure on that lease (other than the hunting) is the number of straight juniper trees! Lots of bows in there!!! Also some arrow-making wood: sage and yaupon holly. I'll post some pictures of the shoots I harvested.
Thanks for inviting us, George! ;D
And I knew that outhouse looked familiar...heheh

Here's a video...

That outhouse does look similar ;D ;D though I think it's nicer than ours. I go out once a month at least to fill feeders. As far as I'm concerned we can get together and do some knapping, bow work and/or shooting, and some hunting any time I head out there. I really should try to sleep more though, I'm a zombie today ::). I will bring the chain saw next time out and we'll cut all the juniper we can use. The land owner wants it removed, we might have to cut more than we want just to keep him happy. I need to bring home a section of mesquite next time too and do better about keeping the borers out of it. Man do they love mesquite!
I'll be butchering tonight. Going to keep a big roast out that bad boy to take to the next get-together. Pork really works well in the dutch oven.
I do have one request though. In your next video could we bring in a a stunt double so I look less like a cranky old man? And, I'm never knapping in shorts again!!!

Jorge here are some pics... They turned out well.. I will post more tomorrow.
Patrick that is a cool video. Thank you for taking it and posting it. Folks Patrick brought buckets of fine rock of all sorts.. I learned a great deal by watching him and Jorge made some good points.. Diego really got into the knapping.. He seemed to be naturally inclined to it.. Patrick has the patience and contenance of an elderly person out for a drive on a Sunday afternoon. I saw him turn some flint into a point that makes you green with envy, but the neatest thing was when his son asked for the point to touch "touch it up." he handed it over to him.. The twins and Diego broke lots of rock and took rides on George's golf cart.. They kept us smiling and laughing. I got some neat things.. Crafty type of things that I will post pics of soon...
The time went by rather rapidly as it always does with great company and good conversation. It was a pleasure to meet the man behind the clever pictures.. That outhouse pic is dead on too..
-
George thank you for hosting this event and for inviting us. Patrick thank your for brining the various types of rock, tools and the twins to play with Diego. Thank you for the magnificent set ;D ;D

-
Thats one happy Georgy

Thanks for posting those pics Cipriano! Good camera you got there!
If the owner wants all those juniper trees gone, then I will certainly be there to help cut them down and haul away the wood!!! ;D

-
Y'all see what I mean??? :D
-
De nada Patrick.. It's not bad for a camera phone.. Me too. I can always use an excuse to run a chain saw and I can bring a couple of good chainsaws ;)
I would be happy with some Juniper camping firewood. It's the best wood for camping.. It burns bright and hot and smells terrific..

Back from Seattle wedding. Looks like I missed a good one.
I will try to make the next one, although the weather will be getting warmer.
