My English Warbow comrades,
A few weeks ago I got in contact with the EWBS secretary in regards to the formation of an American Warbow Society. I received a reply from the new Chairman, Mark Stretton, stating that the EWBS would be happy to help set a new society here in the States.
This has been a dream of mine since I first found out about the EWBS, probably a year ago. Here in the States we have many great archers and bowyers, and I know we could create a strong and lively society. As some inspiration, there are several societies around the world already including, New Zealand and Holland, that have been very successful.
If you are interested please say so and please add any ideas, comments, concerns or other regarding this notion.
Mr. Stretton has asked for a brief outline of ideas to help him help us in this endeavor.
That's all I have for now ;D
Thank you!
~Cody

Glad it went well it was talked about at the AGM last week all the members welcomed it, as a Brit I can say some of my best archery friends are in the US so I look forward to seeing you all.
-
Thats wonderful news Ian! I was curious if it would be brought up at the AGM, and I'm glad everyone welcomed it! ;D ;D ;D Thank you especially for the contact info.

How about The NORTH American Warbow Society. As a Canadian, I'd definately be interested!!
-
I'm totally new here and new to archery in general, but I ordered a 50 pound training bow and plan on working my way up to warbow status. I'd be happy to be a part of such a society. I'm located in Ohio.
-
If you need any advice on how to get started, I'll be happy to help. I started up the NZ branch and we're chugging along nicely.
-
I'm interested ;D, but i'm down in Florida :(
-
Great Idea! Love heavy war bows. The Dutch Warbow society just got launched successfully this last year. I know a member of the Dutch group and will email him about this, He shows up here and lurks around from time to time.
Be back soon!
-
How about The NORTH American Warbow Society. As a Canadian, I'd definately be interested!!
ME TOO!
-
I'm interested, I need to make a stronger bow ;D
Jay
-
THis is great! Thanks everyone for showing your interest! Keep any comments and suggestions coming! That's awesome about the Dutch Warbow Society! I hope he chimes in here and gives us some tips!
-
Hi all, I'm new to the forum, but sounds like a good idea.
-
Hi All, Please keep me informed. I'd need to build a heavier bow, but it sounds like fun. Ron
-
I am new to this forum, plus my money's a little tight (a newlywed) but I would love to join.
Either way congratulations, the first in the usa, please keep me informed as well.
-
If this is to be a warbow group, i think history should be a big part of it.
There is great info on this site.longbow-archers.com (http://longbow-archers.com)
Shooting at marks 150+_ yards away is fun even with a "lighter" bow
-
Thanks Jay,
Loving the site is there any info on African Elephant Bow?
-
Another Canadian here, Hamilton Ontario, I too would welcome the institution of a warbow society in North America.
I regularly shoot a 95 lb bow and just finished tillering a 105 lb from oregon yew, next project is 1/2 inch arrows instead of my relatively meagre 3/8s ones.
We have quite a large continent to cover but I believe interest in heavy bows is growing exponentially and will eventually yield shoots in many regions, that is my hope at least.
-
I just thought of something ??? :
Since this is such a large continent with a spread out interest in warbows, how-a-bout there be a regional/chapter organizational setup to this society? (kinda like societies in college)
--Mark R.
-
A regional or chapter system would be great.
Do we need to brain storm a bit on a "mission" statment or goal for this organization.
Maybe write down some guidlines for the type of bows/arrows/and shooting.
Do we allow crossbows?
What type of insurance might be needed? Always have to CYA, especially if you are a land owner and allow an event on your dirt.
Cost?? lets keep it cheep.
These are only a few things that poped into my head this morning. Everyone keep adding there cents and it will come together :)
Jay
-
I can't wait...I'm in once I get up to shooting 80lbs comfortably.
-
Ok folks,
I am deeply sorry for the long delay in updates and progress on this endeavor. This foul year of 2011 has thrown me some major curveballs and Ive had to take life head on for awhile. Now that all that has passed it is time to refocus and get back on track!
Within the next few days I will be email Mark Stretton again as he has asked for me to provide them (EWBS) with some of our ideas of what we would like to see in the new AWS.
Such as...
-Possibility of regional societies
-Integration of our Canadian comrades
-International shoots
etc.
These are just a few possibilities. Please post any more ideas here or PM me if you feel it necessary.
Thank you very much for your Patience and understanding!
~Cody
-
Hi Dag
Just to let you know there is an EWBS shoot today until sunday that I am traveling to as I write this. I will update the comettee on how things are going, I will pass on any news over the weekend.
Ian
-
Thank you very much Ian!

..Just to be slightly of topic since this is about the American Warbow society;
We are a group up here in Norway thinking about starting up something like a Norse Warbow Society or something.. We thought of a Norwegian Warbow society first, but then Norway is just about 5 mill people.. Including Sweeden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands all of a sudden makes a lot more sense. We might actually be more than 10 people active that way :)
I'll have to talk to some more people on the matter, but just be warned: We're after your records! >:D
-
The American Warbow Society sounds like a great idea I enjoy making and shooting the english warbows but here in California there are very few of us.
-
An American Warbow society sounds like a great idea, Ive heard and seen quite an up tick in interest in War bows lately and I bet now would be a great time to launch something like this. You could count me in on an American War bow society.
-
Its been awhile since my last warbow. Im in NY state and interested in this... how do we obtain the info and such?
Russ
-
i havent made a war bow but this sounds really good....i should have made a few when i lived in oregon.....the out come sounds great with the site....john
-
Hi,
I am new to this forum but if anyone is interested in the Dutch Warbow Society and everything related, just ask.

Another Canadian here, I shoot a 91lb and soon to be 120lber Italian yew warbow and a 115lb Ironwood warbow (in the tillering stages of a 120lb tri-laminate).
I like the sounds of the AWBS and like the idea of regional branches, if the AWBS does not cover Canada, I would be interested to see how many Canadians shoot the great English warbow, to see if a CWBS would be possible! I am a member of the EWBS and definatly see the benifets of that society, a wealth of information and a way to organise large more "serious" shoots.
Love what's going on here guys ;D !
-
are you the same agincourtwarbow from YouTube?
-
are you the same agincourtwarbow from YouTube?
Aye, I am mate! ;)
-
nice to have you aboard ;D
-
Thanks very much!
-
Working on tillering my first Warbow now... I'm game if something starts up!
-
The American Warbow Society sounds like a great idea I enjoy making and shooting the english warbows but here in California there are very few of us.
I'm from California as well, that makes two now.
-
i think i'm the only one in Rhode Island, although for the population that would still mean beating out California from what we know ::)
-
Well, I'm brand spanking new to the PA boards but, would be interested in a Warbow Society.
-
Hello everyone,
After seeing the steady stream of members that would like to see an American Society, I talked to the EWBS chairman about a general format for any new society. The problem as you will know is the scale that the society would need to cover and the logistics of putting it together, Dag has made good efforts bringing the idea to our attention but this really isn't a job for 1 person, when the EWBS was formed it was about 12 people who got together and many of them were in regular contact anyway.
The EWBS committee is currently looking into other chapters namely a German and Canadian one so an American one would make sense but there would need to be a few members that would take responsibility for it, it cant just be one person doing the work. When I hear more I will keep you all informed.
Ian
-
if i can help, tell me how ;)
-
Hmmm... I'd love to be part of this. I'm working on my second longbow and it's 60# at 30" draw. The next one will be 70#, and the next 80#....working up to 100#. I've even got a place to shoot it. ;D
-
I'm very interested in becoming a part of this if possible. I live in the D.C. area, I'll put a thread up to see if I can find interest for primitive/war bow/traditional archery shooting in general in my area, and see if I can find any bowyers in the area that might be interested in this sort of thing as well.
I've only very recently started archery; I have practically no instruction or experience as of yet, and I currently have a 55# longbow. But I am interested in developing the strength and skill to be able to shoot with a war bow as well as make one, both English and recurves (a recurve of a significant poundage and made in a traditional style could count as a war bow, yes? or do you define a war bow strictly as a longbow-type with a certain poundage?).
I'll keep in touch if you have an e-mail list?
-
Hello All,
So it has been mentioned several times that getting a website, even if its just a Facebook page or a simple blog, up and running would be very helpful to get this Society of the ground.
Anyone good with websites and such? I have no experience in website domains and programming. The best I could do is make a facebook page, that way we have a central communications area on the web to call our own. But then again not everyone uses facebook.
-
i don't use facebook, but ill try to help anyway i can
-
What about just collecting an e-mail list and having mass e-mails of announcements for those interested? Perhaps a tad less personal or flexible than facebook, but everyone on the forum's going to have an e-mail I would imagine.
-
It needs someone who feels like they can take the reins and, has the free time to set a society up.
-
i would, but i'm lacking the free time part of that, if we cant find 1 person to do it, maybe get a group of like 3 people to share the responsibility
-
I would be glad to set up an e-mail list to get us started! And if anyone would like to share the responsibility of this, I'd be more than happy to share the reins.
I'm glad to help communications between groups/chapters and I would be excited to help in the founding of this sort of society in any way I can.
Please pm me your e-mail address and location if you're interested and I'll add you to my contact list, or send me a message at a gmail address set up for this purpose:
americanwarbow@gmail.com
-
I could handle our youtube presence. With your permission, I could use the "amercanwarbow@gmail" account to create a youtube channel. Some correspondence related to the channel would go that gmail address but I would respond to all messages within the youtube channel. I would also handle all video submissions. I will not generate revenue from the channel.
How does that sound?
-
Ringneck, are you able to create a youtube channel with the "americanwarbow" user name?
-
if you do a YouTube channel. ill donate some videos soon :D
-
Jack, I can certainly log into youtube from americanwarbows, but I'm uncertain if that makes it an official youtube account or not. Probably is.
I'd be ok with sharing the gmail account as long as my personal e-mail isn't shown on the account. I'm pretty sure it isn't I'll have to double check that; I think it's under my full name I'll have to edit that.
Why don't both of us figure that out, Jack. Send me your e-mail address or e-mail that account and I'll first add you to contacts, and then we'll figure out how to share access for a youtube channel. Probably isn't too hard.
Which by the way, is a Great idea! And thank you for offering to send videos, fishfinder!
-
Ring, Sending you a PM ;D
-
jackcrafty, i'm here to help however i can, just tell me what you need done
-
Finder, if you've got some videos, get them ready. I'll let you know when the channel is up ;D
-
My email is jackcrafty@yahoo.com
Email me any info, questions, suggestions, etc. I'll keep a record and use this to help draft the society's mission statement, focus, and rules.
Also, I am volunteering to represent the Southwest region of the US. I can also host events anywhere within 150 miles from Midland.
-
ill represent the northeast, but because of my age, i'm not sure how much i can do as far as events, but ill see when it gets to that point
-
I'm in the Mid-Atlantic!
It will take some time to get this together. I think first and foremost, communication with each other is key to getting something started. We're all very spread out, and so communicating via e-mail, and sharing interpretations and such on youtube, will only help.
I'm a member of the Historical European Martial Arts Alliance, and I will ask them about people that might be interested in the archery aspect of martial arts, and how to help us become an organization. Once I get my bow again (alas, it is in storage several states away!) I will also get out and practice, and see if anyone else in my area is interested in getting together and starting a local group.
I'd basically want to see the AWBS ultimately as an umbrella nonprofit organization that aides diverse local practice groups with resources. Resources on how to shoot war bows, resources on how to make war bows, resources on the history behind what we do, etc. And of course, communication and hopefully, competition between groups.
So the first thing any of us can do is see if we can start a local group. It doesn't have to be official (just legal hopefully), but getting some friends together and practicing once or twice a week does wonders to help improve.
And since we aren't necessarily limited to only practicing the English/Welsh war bow, we might be able to get people interested in other national styles of martial archery to practice alongside us. I don't think there's anything wrong with "cross training". In other martial arts (I want to focus on archery as a martial art, not just a competitive sport), all it does is make you a better martial artist as you learn about different styles and different ways to solve the same problem. I don't see why that can't apply to archery as well.
I'm going to work on some essays/statements on some of my ideas for this in the next couple of weeks and send it to you all on the e-mail list. Stay tuned!
-
ill see what interest i can conjurer up in my area
-
Here's Part 1 of my introductory video on my new Youtube channel "American Warbow SW": ;D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ2hZsUWaEQ
-
I mentioned this in the other thread, but let me repeat:
Great job on the intro video, Jack Crafty!
I think that ash-juniper wood looks beautiful, and I can't wait to see that thing in action! I think the bowstring looks fairly distinct too, is that how it looks before you wax it? Interesting!
I'm interested in making a bow out of white ash when I can get the tools for it, is that closely related to ash-juniper or are those not that related?
Also, just wanted to throw out:
Is anyone else that has posted in this thread interested in signing up to an e-mail list? I'll try to make it a habit of sending out any pertinent information we come up with to those on the list.
Is anyone from Canada interested in working with us for a (North) American Warbow Society? Or are you guys interested in setting up a separate Canadian Warbow Society? I noticed that there seems to be a few people in the Ontario province on the forums; that would be a perfect opportunity to form a practice group or several I think.
Either way, if anyone in that area would like to coordinate with us, feel free to let me/us know!
-
I think that ash-juniper wood looks beautiful, and I can't wait to see that thing in action! I think the bowstring looks fairly distinct too, is that how it looks before you wax it? Interesting!
Yes, that string is not waxed and it's only 2-ply. The final string will be waxed and 3-ply. I've had good results using sisal twine for bowstrings as long as the twine is high quality and at least 200# test. This twine is not the stuff you buy at Wally World.
-
200# test sisel twine, I'll keep that in mind :D
Oh, and I've watched all five of your videos thus far, and I say you're doing a fantastic job getting started up! My only (very minor) criticism would be to ask if you could increase the volume of the microphone as it's sometimes difficult to hear (I have a very low volume laptop that has bad audio quailty, so it's partly my fault), but I realize that's difficult to do outside with background noises.
But other than that, you have some great info and some great advice on exercise and diet! I may not go on Paleo because the idea of eating that much meat makes my stomach churn (I like my carbs thank you); but I definitely need to get my upper body strength going better. I'll hold to that, 20-30 pushups minimum per day!
I may be slow to get any video out of my own, but that's because I'm sadly currently bowless. Once I fix that, I'll see what I can do! Until then, I'll make sure to spread the word about your channel and group, especially to my HEMA friends in the Texas area!
-
Thanks Jonathan! I'll work on that volume issue. The mic I'm using now is kind of unpredictable.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with limiting the amount of meat in your diet! I just happen to like meat A LOT and lean heavily in that direction. ;D
-
Hello everyone, this is in responce to Ringeck85's comment as well as any other Canadians viewing. I have contacted Mark Stretton a while back and I am working on the Canadian Warbow Society, (thanks to Keith of EWBNZ and a number of fellow EWBS members, who have given me great advice from their own successes.) There are already a number of us, almost all are in eastern Ontario. All others are welcome, please PM or Email me if interested, (Agincourtwarbow@hotmail.com) .
Thanks and best of luck to our fellow North Americans!
Cheers,
-Jake
-
IThat's great news, Jake! I think that forming a Canadian Warbow Society, as you all seem somewhat concentrated in Ontario, makes perfect sense. I wish you and your fellow Canadians the best in your endeavors, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
I look forward to having the American and Canadian Warbow Societies interact sometime soon!
Oh btw, I also enjoy watching the stuff on your youtube channel. You have the makings of a great archer, I think, and if you keep up with your practice and talent, you will certainly be a leader in the community by your example. I'll definitely keep you in touch, and would you mind if I added you to the e-mail list I made?
also also cheers :P

Here my short intro for the AWBS Northwest!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjkENsediWg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjkENsediWg)
-
Excellent start, Cody! And thanks for including both primitive archery forums and the gmail account in the vid! I'm sure that will help with growing interest across the nation for our group!
Thank you to everyone who's helping to get the word out there!
-
Hey there Jonathan, thanks for the kind words mate! I too look forward to the meeting of the two North American Warbow Society branches, lets take the continent by storm eh! haha.
Aye by all means feel free to add me mate, keep in touch, communication is always key! ;).
Thanks again Jonathan, cheers!
Also nice intros out there, nice work Jackcrafty and Dag, all the best to you both.
-Jake
-
Jake has done a great job in making a start on a CWS. If you blokes can match his enthusiasm and commitment I'm sure a AWS will be a great success. The Aussies also have a group up and running in which the Kiwis have been included into their own unique grading system.
http://warbowaustralia.weebly.com/
Cheers
Keith
-
I like that grading system! Very cool 8) Does the member get a patch corresponding with their rank?
-
I don't know about a patch but you do get a certificate. The top 3 names on the list belong to me and the NZ warbow bows :)
-
Say, does anyone know the forum for the EWBS? I've seen some links floating around but it's a dead forum. Is there a new one up yet floating around somewhere?
-
After some problems it became a closed forum only EWBS members are allowed to access the forum, it is still going very strong.
-
Ah, ok, a members only forum. I read that the yearly membership for them resets in June, so if I tried to sign up for it now for a yearly membership, it would only go till June. That's correct, right? That's an odd membership policy, though I suppose it both discourages casual members and encourages signing up in June or whenever the ideal time is.
-
http://warbowaustralia.weebly.com/
Interesting site.
I notice you have taken the Livery and 1/4lb arrow drawings and text from the EWBS website but not credited it to Jeremy Spencer as it appears there. The Standard arrow text/drawing is Hugh Soar's work. Please credit the people whose work you have posted on your site.
Well done to Mark Stretton on his distance shooting world records. I wasn't aware he'd achieved those so congratulations are due. What were they for, please?
Diolch,
Jeremy
-
The EWBS membership is based on shooting member (£20) and non-shooting member (£5) I don't know about registering now and what membership time you would get you could email them directly and ask.
-
Hi Jeremy
The EWBS stuff (yours and Hugh's stuff) on the Aussie site is nowt to do with me. You'll need to contact them directly as I don't think any of them post on here.

Sounds great to me but right now I am starting at sq. one....anyone in South Louisiana ?? I was in the SCA for awhile so this is interesting to me
Jeanette
-
Hi Jeanette! I'm close to square one as well in warbow shooting (i.e. I do not have a warbow yet I have to work up to that draw weight), so no worries: we'll all get there eventually.
Feel free to join the contact list at:
americanwarbow@gmail.com
And we also have a facebook group here, just ask to be added:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/316734581697101/
So far, I haven't seen any contacts from South Louisiana; the closest members to you are in Texas and florida. But invite your friends and anyone else you might know in your area that could practice archery with you!
-Jonathan
-
I figured I should post my name and town since I'm on the Facebook group too. Joel Reed Philomath,OR
-
gotcha on there! Awesome.
-
I'm very interested in this. I live in Western Oklahoma. Anyone care to pm me a link for rules and such? How do I join?
-
pm ringneck, he will put you on the mailng list,
-
Hi carpenter!
the contact list is: americanwarbow@gmail.com (just send me an e-mail and I'll add ya)
and there's a facebook group for the American Warbow Society as well, just request to join and one of us will add you there.
-
Wow!! things are moving along a bit. Cool. I haven't been on for a while:) I sent my name in for the e-mail updates.
Jay from Wisconsin
I am looking forward to reading the first draft of the mission statement.
Thanks to the folks who are taking the lead on this!!
-
I would definitely be interested as well!
-
Joined on Facebook, mapped on google and joined on Stick and String...
Currently tillering on Take 2 for the Warbow... hoping I don't blow this one up too!
-
Welcome Ironmonger! I added you to the facebook group earlier today. Nice to have you along! Keep us posted on how that warbow is going! Im currently working on a hick/ipe/boo warbow :)
-
Hello all, Ive been a 'lurker' for awhile, time to come out of hiding! Im very excited to see whats developing here! I would be quite interested in helping and joining the AWBS. Im from Charlotte, North Carolina; anyone else around my area?
I have an 80in 110# hickory backed yew warbow. I have yet to try making my own bow.. YET.. I am slowly gathering tools :p I do make my own arrows though. Will be starting on a new batch of 1/2 Poplar shafts, tapered to 3/8 with some perdy Hector Cole heads ;D Just need to wait until afew things arrive.. its like christmas o.o Anyone else happen to be in the SCA? I also joined the facebook group earlier :)
-
welcome ;D, its great to have someone else join us, do you have skype by chance? we have meetings on there every few weeks
-
Thank you! Ive always found the site VERY helpful, hoping I can help out with the start of the AWBS! I will have to make a skype account for theses meetings. Always helpful to beable to talk in 'person' rather than through posts, much quicker too! spent most of my sunday trying to find a single field I could do some distance shooting in.. not one! hahaha, thinking I may try to use a Golf range :P
-
when you get a skype made, please post it, or if you don't want it out in the open, pm me and i can spread it within the awbs,
-
Ok... getting closer to finished with Warbow Take 2... and it DID NOT BLOW UP!!! OMG!!!
I'm taking the "shooting in" on this bow much more slowly than Take 1 and have been taking the extra time to exercise it more and treat it with love and respect. Initial checks show, what to my eye, is a good compass tiller and its drawing 90# at 26" but I stopped pulling there due to my paranoia after that boo hic blew up in my face last time! lol We'll git er done though.
Posted a pic on my facebook of the groups and will get some other pics up as soon as I have some more time.
-
Hey guys, i dont have a heavy weight warbow yet, all i have is a 60# elb, but i hope to make an 80+ pounder soon. And i just sent a request to join the facebook group!
-
60 is a great start, would you mind giving your email so i can add yu to the email list, and its great to have another join our ranks ;D
-
Hey Will, welcome! Just remember, the formula for building up to the big bows is as follows:
1. Loose Arrow with heaviest bow you have
2. Repeat 1 until your arms fall off
3. Repeat 1 and 2 after the arms heal.
Simple!
-
I am interested also .
Chris from N. Ga
-
ok, if you could please send me ypur email, i can put you on the email list, and welcome ;D
-
I would like to join the American Warbow Society. How do I join? I don't have a bow just yet, but I will be building myself one.
-
Hello Sixkiller! You can find us on Facebook! Ask to join the American Warbow Society group page and you'll be added!
-
Likewise, I'm in Sixkiller's boat. In the process of building one right now. Haha funny story actually; just got a new band saw and figured that I'd break it in while making 1/4in hick backings... Just powerwashed the side of the house the other day and in my overzealous endeavor on the saw, I hooked up the hose of the shop vac in the secondary inlet. After blowing through 6-7 backings, I noticed that the vac had just covered the house in sawdust ::) and my lady wasn't too thrilled. Guess what I'm doing tomorrow? :'(
-
Hi Warbowmen,
I spent all of 2011 learning all about Yew shortbows, longbows and warbows...then found the staves and tools and learned how to build my own. I now have 4 bows of Yew I use regularly: Shortbow for castle turrets 55#, Targetbow for learning building and the technique 25#, longbow for training strength 82# and Warbow 135#...thee one ;D
This American Warbow Society sounds good to me too...but I'll be spending all of 2013 building strength to get that 135# full draw mastered.
My current accomplishment in Yew is hitting a Clout at 180 yards, making a gold shot at 200 yards (180 meters) and shooting a full Clout Tournament with my 82# Yew Longbow which is 72 shots in an afternoon.
Any other Clout shooters out there? :)
William
