How many knappers here saw their own preforms or are using sawed preforms to make points?
Is it a common method now or do most still break a large piece from a spall and take it down from there...Just curious?

I'm using slabs right now, but once I get my to do list whitled down some gonna start trying some percusion, Bub

I saw Osidian and now Tallahatta that I found it cuts real easy.

Rarely do I use slabs. I'm not opposed to them . I'm fortunate enough to live in a state that's rich in knapping material.

About the only time I use a slab is when it's thick enough to use percussion on. I'm no good at working them so I don't buy them.

I suppose that I would use a rock saw if I had one: it saves material. I've worked slabs and they are OK but I prefer to work spalls, blades, and flakes. I might have a friend cut some of my rare material (like Alibates) but I don't spend much money on slabs. I'll work glass before I'll work on a slab.

That's me. I bought some slabs when i started just trying everything out - still have most of em in a bucket. I like bi-facing those odd shaped rocks to see what i can get. Like Tower, i have a plentiful supply so don't worry too much about wasting material. Though, id prolly use a saw if i had one..
