Title: Elm longbow 70# 29"
Post by: druid on June 26, 2011, 09:02:04 am
One more of my older bows...
This is my first elm longbow. It is 74" ntn, 35 mm wide and 25 mm thick at the handle. Tapering to the 1/2" nocks. I expected this to be more powerfull but this was realy weak stave, I realize after begining. Ended at 70# at 29". Brace is 6" , less than 1 1/2" set. 19 knots on the back and 18 on the belly. One limb has some reflex in the outer half. This is far too long bow for this draw weight but it is not sluggish. As I said- I expected much heavier bow and because that I tilered it like Roy King suggested for this kind of bow- just a little in the middle and more in the midlimbs, to look a little bit whiped. Next time I should listen to brother Pathfinder and check early-latewood ratio, beh.....

I love the row of knots down the back, looks like the Loch Ness monster.
Great tiller as always.

I know I'm told you this on paleoplanet, but I love the way you work those knotty staves. A master of the knotty stave!  ;D Great longbow. I like the nocks too.

Good looking bow, one thing to watch for with elm is that it will hang on to moisture longer than most woods for some reason. I still have an elm longbow that seemed to keep gaining weight for 6 months after I built it. I built the bow at 57# and a month later it was up to 70#. I had to drop the weight a total of 3 times before it stablized.

You definitely have those long D-style bows down - I love it!
