Title: Ran out of bait... (more pictures added)
Post by: mullet on July 02, 2011, 04:23:54 pm
..And glad I did.Caught this nice mess of Bluegill and one Shellcracker this morning. They were bedding in a foot and a half of water and I kept catching them till the last worm. This is about all I like to clean at one time anyway.

We stocked a bunch of F1 Hybrid Gills on our pond 4 springs ago...was just thinking about doing a cookout with some.  What's preferred method of cleaning em & cooking em?

I love fishing for Bluegill, and catfish. I caught these in a Park around the corner from my house. Before it was a Park it was just woods and old Phosphate mine pits. That was my hangout when I was in my Teens. It was kinda fun to go back and hit my old, favorite fishing spots.

Lee;
I scale, cut the head and clean the guts. Then lightly batter with corn meal and deep fry in peanut oil. The heads and guts get buried in my garden to feed the worms.

Could ya smell them bedding Eddie.   I used to love to take a Brim Buster telescoping pole a bit of 4# mono line and a few different popping bugs and see what was popping! I can smell them beds from here.  8)   Good eats too, just like you discribed.  ;)

     Man you hit the jackpot with that bunch.  Oh, I do love Blue Gills, Shell Crackers, Warmouth perch, Specks, and little yellow belly Catfish!  Man, those are nice ones.  Yep, just scale, and cut the heads off, and clean out the innards, and a little homemade batter, and whoowee, they are good!  I like to cook in Coconut oil, but it all tastes great!  So did you get any Rain?  Didn't rain at all over here.  Was supposed to, but nice clear skies all day.  Did You take your Grand son with you?  Or do you want to keep your little honey hole a secret? ;D  I bet he would have had a ball.  Also you can use those little Japanese beetles that get around the door light at night.  When I was a kid, I would get a mayonnaise jar, and fill it up pretty well with those, and the bream loved them.  Most of the time I would just worms like you did, but occasionally I would use those beetles.  My cousin used to buy crickets, till I showed him the results with the beetles. ;)  Man, those sure look good !  Especially with some of those collards, and some hush puppies!  Darn!, Now I have to hit the refrigerator! :P

I went back this morning and they were still there. They're invited to the fish fry, too. ;D Pat and David, I was catching them on my ultra lite spinner, fishing out of my Kayak. Pat, yea, you could smell them, that's how I found the spot.

Never caught one, I think it gets a little too cold for them where I'm at. I was told they taste pretty good, though

Nice catch.  You sure are making my hungry for some fish and home made fries.

Growing up, we had an oscar in our aquarium for years.  It got huge.  We used to buy it half a dozen  gold fish and watch him eat them.

My buddy had a 3# Oscar in his aquarium. He would hold a shrimp about six inches above the water and it would jump and take it out of his fingers.

I like the eyes also. I once made a soup with nothing but crab meat and floating eyeballs just for the heck of it. And it was quite tasty. :P :)

My favorite fish, and favorite beer, nice haul. We filet them and bread them with fry crisp, and pickle the rib meat. My wife makes fun of me cause I got a whole tackle box full of bass lures and fish with a worm a bobber or the fly rod, tons of fun on light tackle.

Great haul Eddie, I fillet then, then i take a sheet of tinfoil and pull the edges up a bit, I put butter, diced garlic, and onions in the bottom, then i put salt and pepper on both sides of each filet and put a few in each tinfoil "boat". then you crimp the edges at the top and put them on the grill. UNBEATABLE!!!!!
