This is a honey mesquite sapling that I picked up in San Angelo, TX. It is only 1 1/4 " thick at the handle and to get the tips to line up, I had to make it 69" ntn. It ended up drawing 40# @ 28". It's not real fast, 140 fps with 450 gr arrows, but a real pleasure to shoot. I made the handle wrap out of a scrap of coyote pelt that was left over from making my daughters quiver. I left the fur on and to the inside, thinking it would cushion any hand shock it might have. A needless precaution as it turned out, but it does fill my hand better with the added thickness. I left a little bit of inner bark on for a strike plate. It got 3 coats of tru-oil rather haphazardly applied due to the fact that I never thought it would last. It has two rather ominous knots that I considered fatal flaws. I never expected it to survive tillering let alone still be shooting today. It has become my favorite stump shooting bow when I'm home. I tillered it using the shadow method described in the TBB. Thanks for looking.

cool bow you did a outstanding job on it.
-
Nice, I like that a lot. I just brought a mesquite log home to try a bow out of, but my attempt at splitting it in half was a miserable failure and cost me a stave. Thought I'd wait until the weekend and give it another go. Anyway, beautiful bow.

I like it very much, I am fan of sneakyness.

Very nice job on a tricky stick like that one.
-
Now that's primitive right there. You def employed the right design to get that stick throwing arrows. Great job.
-
Cool bow. Alot of character.
-
A stick and a string at its best, really cool!

Thanks alot fellas, any praise from the likes of you all, is high praise indeed! George, keep an eye on that mesquite, as you probably know, it will check and split faster than Osage. Can't wait to see what you craft from such an ornery growing tree. Although, I have seen some of the osage staves you have tamed, mesquite should be no bigger challenge for you.
-
Wow, very nice bow...wouldn't want to leave that on the forest floor, you'd never find it again!
-
Man, that is Sweet!
Been wondering about mesquite...
Looks like I will be packing the Stihl to dove camp... ;)

Bring your walking shoes too. I must've looked at 50 trees before cutting the crooked one I took. Sadly, I drove by that one on the way out, thinking there'd be a better one.

Very cool! I never would have had the guts to tackle one like that, but I'm glad I can come here and see the work of people that do.
-
Wonderful tiller on that one! Very nice job with a suspect piece of wood. Between you and druid I am going to start looking twice at some "reject" wood.

After seeing the post dbb did on that "challenging piece of wood" I'm starting to think that with enough determination and patience, there is no such thing as reject wood!
-
Wow. Now that took guts and you sure stuck the tiller. It never ceases to amaze me the work that I see on here. Inspires me to stretch my comfort zone. Danny
-
Beautiful full draw profile on that one! I don't know why I love the snakey ones so much.
-
Nice one, snaketastic.

Dang nice,good job.
-
Sure has some character; very nice!
-
Thank you, you all are too kind! :-[ There really was no guts or bravery involved in trying this one. If it blew, I still had some outstanding wood for the smoker! ;) Aside from, as George mentioned, the extra mileage on my boots trying to find a useable sapling, I really didn't have anything invested in it. Kind of takes the pressure off when you don't have hours of work or hard earned dollars invested from the get go. Another point in the case for sapling bows. :D
-
Cool bow Josh. George did you ever make a mesquite bow?
Cipriano

Wow, this is a blast from the past. Nope, the borers got in that piece of mesquite I brought home so bad that I never tried it.
George
-
Maybe I need to bring you a fresh log.

nice, my kind of bow!
-
I didn't expect to see this one on the front page again. Lol! Thanks for the kind words fellas. I still shoot this one pretty regularly. She ain't no powerhouse, but she's as comfortable as a well worn pair of moccasins! Just a well mannered bent stick with more than its share of ugly! Josh
-
That is fantastic!!!
-
Great job Josh. Looks like a tricky one
-
very very nice, good job getting a bow out of that
chuck
-
You worked that out of some tough stuff for sure , a good lookin bow right there.
-
Really cool bow Josh. We need to get together sometime this summer. Your at one end of the state and Im at the other. Danny
-
That is one heck of a bow Josh!
-
Always enjoy looking at bows from GunDoc posts! You seem to have a knack for making a style that I really like out of some pretty unlikely candidates. Thanks for sharing.
-
That is one wild looking bow Josh. 8)
-
Gun Doc, That's what I call a PA bow right there...Taking what nature gives you and turning it into a bow, looks like you did just that. Excellent job working it all out! Cool looking set with the tommy and all...

Nice job.
-
nice bow Josh.
-
Nicely done Sir. Glad I got a second chance at this one!
-
Josh did you enter this bow in BOM?
Cipriano
-
Well thank you very much fellas! This one didn't really garnish much attention first time around. I'm a little surprised that it is catching some folks eye now. Pleased, but surprised nonetheless. Yeah Danny, we need to at least shake hands and howdy a bit. Maybe I'll make it to ojam one of these days if we don't cross trails before then. Thanks again! Josh
Yep...I sure did Amigo. I believe it was in the August 2011 self BOM. I don't believe it got many votes, but then there were a lot of bows in the lineup in those days.
-
Oh ok. Too bad. It's a dandy bow.
-
Yes Sir...
I remember this bow...
It's as Kool as they come.
Plus I have a Soft Spot (Head or Heart) for Mesquite... ;D
