Title: Little Hickory D
Post by: Kegan on June 27, 2007, 02:12:19 pm
Well, outta the hickory haul I had two satves taht dried really quickly, being thinner and shorter. So, I went to work and one snapped (there was a really bad thin spot that occured while splitting). So i set to work on the other one, shich was a bit more snakey and slightly longer. SO here it is so far- 52" long, about 1 1/4" at the handle, roughly 52# at 22". I still have to heat treat the belly and put a finish on it, but it taught me alot about how the width of the limbs affect the draw length. Saves alot of space too ;D.

Looking good!  I'm working on a 52" hickory myself, I hope it comes out as good as yours.  I think I'll heat-treat my belly when its done too.

Very nice, Keegan. What's  the brace height? Seems a bit high for a short bow. Jawge

Really neat weapon for brushy riverbottom whitetails you've made there, Kegan. We'll look at it Saturday for Self Bow of the Month, of course.

Is it belly up in that last photo?  If so, that is about the kind of set I get in short hickory bows.

I'd also straighten up that bow arm and get the handle in the web of your thumb more.  You're kind of holding the bow outside your body, you want to shoot "in the bow" more as they say in England.  Feel free to tell me to mind my own business though.

Thanks everyone. made up a coupla arrows and finished heat treating the belly (removing most of the set it wants to take and adding alot of snap). It is a nice little shorty, but next one I'll make wider to gt a few more inches of draw outta it. It is a screamer though- really nice for 10-15 yard shots.
