Title: Two Osage bows from MOJAM
Post by: RyanY on August 22, 2011, 07:52:05 pm
I have made it a tradition to get an osage stave at MOJAM and get it to a shooting bow in time to compete in the clout shoot with it. This year I was able to get two bows shooting by the end of the weekend and now I’ve finally finished them up.

The first bow, the more yellow of the two, is pyramid style with a Z shaped handle. It’s 64” tip to tip and about 50#@28”. It’s 2” at the fades tapering to 1.25 at mid limb and sweeping to 3/8” tips for a slightly more narrow profile than an exact pyramid in the outer limbs. It weighs 22.5oz and took about an inch of set.

The second bow, the darker one, is, I guess you could say, American flatbow. It’s 66” tip to tip and about 55#@28”. It’s 1.5” at the fades tapering to 1 1/8” at mid limb and tapering to 3/8” nocks. It is also 22.5oz and took about an inch of set. This piece of wood in particular I got from Timo and is by far the most dense piece of osage I’ve worked with. Use of a cabinet scraper left a glossy smooth finish. It was a pleasure to work with.

Thanks for looking. :)

Man,

Like the look of both of these bows but am really liking your Z-handle idea.
Are you getting any bending in the handle or is it a fully non working section?

Regards,

-gus

Thanks for the comments guys.

Gus, It is supposed to be a fully non working section and I don't feel any bend but I know that there could be a bit more meat in this handle. The stave only allowed for as much thickness as there is and this bow needed to get shooting. There is a little character in the handle that may look like its bending. :)

Thanks for the kind words guys.  ;D

Timo, That stave was something else density wise. Really a pleasure to finish.

blackhawk, It was definitely a challenge. Didn't get the second one shooting till 11pm on the last day. Ha!

rainman, Unfortunately I don't have a magazine subscription so my bows are ineligible.

Those both finished up real nice Ryan. Great job! :)
Two bows done at Mojam is quite a feat... I remember that first time you were there and shot the clout shoot with the bow you finished.
I was impressed then and now I'm double impressed... ;D

Thanks Paul. I'll have to make sure I work on my shooting since I seem to have the bow making bit down. Either that or go all out and make three. Ha!  ;D
