finished a crepe myrtle stave bow today , this makes five CM staves . wanted to see if small diameter limbs would do well . here is a 59 inch stave from a 1 1/4 inch limb , width is 1 1/8th out of the fades to 1/2 inch pin nocks . 51 lbs at 28 inches , stained with green food coloring and ebony tips and handle.this one had a little character and a slight deflex midlimb on one , i left it all natural no heating

Nice bow! I like the stain job loos like a swamp bow :D How is the performance on the smaller diameter stave?

That's awesome ken. Great job on that one with so little to work with dimension wise. :D
I don't like the color green personally but that finish does look cool. ;)

Ken that bow looks good and flat. Is it fast? does not look like it has much string follow... Great job again with very little wood.. 8)

Nice, clean and simple.
That's a good poundage and draw from a small diameter stave.

Ken you build really sweet bows and this one is no exception.
I have found a source for crepe myrtle and plan to cut about a dozen staves in the next couple of days. Anything special about curing it?

thanks Lane , it seasons well ive been leavin the bark on till im ready to use it however mine was winter cut so if you can peel the bark i would go for it , splitting is easy and fast , ive just been sealing the ends and bustin them in half

Ken, I have quite a few CM trunks and limbs I cut and sealed this spring. I got talked outta using them for bow wood at another site. You have inspired me. can you give me some rough techniques? Do you just get the bark off and that is the back like other white woods? looks like you carry the width pretty far down before you narrow? Is the thickness a constant taper or flat?
-
Very nice Ken, love the green. looks like you have a new favorite bow wood. :) definately a good oe to take to the woods.
-
Yes Sir,
I like this bow.
My mother-in-law's Crepe Myrtle (tree sized) may be in jeopardy... >:D

Raven , i scrape the bark off with my knife held at 90 degree angle and that is the back , on this one it is a bend through the handle so the center is parallel and then a slow taper to the tips . seems easier to keep the center stiff that way.all too often a bend through the handle bow looks like a hinge in the handle bow. also the thickness tapers some ,unlike a true pyramid
thank you Eric , you may be right
thanks Gus
