ok was workin in western okla. and we came across a tree that looked like a pretty straight 18' Osage tree in the woods,so in our haste started cutting and realized "no yellow wood" . I have cut plenty of Osage trees but this was the first time to be fooled so (kinda felt dumb :-[) . but the bark and leaves looked similar and it had small thorns on the limbs it even smelled a little like Osage sapwood. So what kind of tree is it i look in my field guide and a few looked close shingle oak , maybe Russian olive(maybe some wierd hybrid that would be cool jk) ? i don't know any help appreciated .
thanks,sa

im no expert but my first thought when seeing the bark was ash
-
It looks like Gum Bumelia, to me. JMHO God Bless

petec - i googled gum bumelia and that looks alot like it , after we started cuttin and further inspection of the tree we were all a little stumped . guess that what i get for not paying attention.
I wander if its good bow wood?

My first hunch was ash. The bark, the inside and the leaves are similar (google: "ash tree leaves"). I'm going with my first hunch.

i googled ash but what got me were the thorns.... gum bumelia has thorns. the bark in the pic does look more like ash but up close resembles osage quite abit , and i just read that gum bumelia is sometimes mistaken for osage . ??????

forgot about the thorns, sounds like you have a match then

that looks exactly like the oak tree in my yard, I do believe its shingle oak, I know its not ash because I have 4 ash trees , I also have lots of osage trees around and their leaves or more ovate than that . I always thought my oak trees bark looked Identicle to osage bark aswell. I am about 80% its a type of oak , Im gonna say shingle oak like the one in my yard. Only a few oak trees have this oval type leaf most are lobed. Well anyway I hope you make a bow or try this wood because I have wondered what type of bow this type of oak would yeild ya allready harvested it, no need to not try her out. Best of luck to ya.

yep gum bully or Sideroxylon lanuqinosum

The only reason I have not tried it(Gum Bumelia),yet is because the trees in my fence row are all twisted . It bears a fruit, and should make a decent bow. Try it and let us know. JMHO God Bless
