Title: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE 2011!!!!!
Post by: Elktracker on September 21, 2011, 02:57:10 am
Ok ill be in charge of running this if no one is apposed or would rather do it. All I will be asking for is you to post that (you are in).
If you would like put a little info about what you like bow specs ect so your giftee can read it and have an idea, but it all comes down to what you get is what you get so dont throw a fit. This gift exchange will be all HANDMADE GOODS by you for your recipient, the gift should be made by you from the heart not from the wallet so dont go out and buy something ;). The gifts do not have to be primitive gifts they can be anything that you make with your own two hands. Also if someone needs personal info on thier recipient in order to build something for that person then I will get that as well. The sign up cut off will be October 1st at midnight, after that Marie (calendargirl) will get the names out to you within 3 or so days as to who you are sending to. Anyone involved will be expected to ship out there gift NO LATER than Jan.15th and no earlier than Dec.15th  Thanks and let the sign up begin!! If there are any questions please ask and we will try to get them anwsered for you.

As Pat B said Primitive archer is not involved in this exchange, it is something we are doing as members! AND AGAIN ITS ABOUT WHAT YOU GIVE NOT WHAT YOU GET SO NO WHINING! LOL

I'M IN!

Ok while we are at this we may as well go ahead and send mailing info to me via PM, So please send me your mailing address like this so I can copy and paste it to my list

I am happy to help in anyway. I am glad it is up and running this year.  Josh just let me know what you need me to do.  I can do the spread sheet thing again.
I would suggest that all names need to be in by Oct. 1 and then the trade begins.  I know that is in 9 days.  That will give time to draw names and pass the information back out.  Also if you are from another country or willing to ship to another country that was very helpful to know last year.

Thanks CG I appretiate it! and yes we would love it if you would do the name drawing if thats what your saying ;D  I am good with 9 days so unless anyone objects Oct1st will be the last day to sign up.

Joshypoo  :D  you are doing a great job at this already!
The over seas shipping is impt.  as well as the personal information.  Also those that sign up can post on this thread their stuff  that they like.. you know like long walks on the beach, warm sunsets... etc
Also, I would suggest posting an announcement in the announcement (obviously) but also on the most popular threads with a link to this so that they won't post on that one but over here where the cool people are.  O0

I really enjoyed working on my gift last year and the quality of the gift I received goes without saying but I'll unfortunately have to bow ( ;) ) out this year, I'm just too skeered that I won't be able to get something done in time...I will however enjoy watching all the fun.

I have some real cool ideas of what to make.  Can't wait to get started.

As far as bow spec's I'm a lefty with a 29" draw.  Like to shoot between 45-50#.

One question.  I am having knee surgery in about a month.  Can I ship my item before my surgery or do we wait until Christmas?

Thanks

I'm in!

I think I may be forced to stay within the U.S. as most of my handmade stuff these days have animal products attached. I tried to work with CITES after attempting a trade with medicinewheel and they simply forbid some of the things (certain snake skins) or cost too much for the permits of other animal products.

I suppose, for the record, I'll state that I'm right handed and draw anywhere from 28"-30", but I will be thrilled and honored by anything someone makes for me with their own hands.

In the past the completion/and shipped out date was Jan 15.  That gave people who had time off around the holidays time to finish up and ship it out.  What do you all think about that time frame?  Some people like sending it off and/or receiving it by Dec 25/Jan1.  So any of those dates are up.  I think in the past we thought that extra 2 weeks helped.  But that means some won't get their gift until end of Jan early Feb.
thoughts?

To be on the safe side I think the Jan. 15 date is good. Trying to ship between Christmas and New Year could be rediculous. Getting your gift out before Christmas would be ideal but I think we need a "not before" date also...say Dec. 1 or Dec. 15. just so it does feel like a Christmas gift and not just something you give or get.

Ok so unless anyone has good reason for argument The LATEST date to ship will be Jan 15th and the earliest date you can ship will be Dec. 15 so it is more of a chrismas gift. Hope this works for everyone so unless we have any objections then these will be the dates.

Starting to feel the Excitement build...

The backup gift is nearly finished.
Figure I'll wait to discover the identity of my Gift Recipient before beginning assembly of the primary gift.

So we can't ship before December 15th and should have shipped by January 15 Is this correct?

My Stats:
Right Handed
5'10" Tall
28" Draw
Generally shoot 50 to 60 pounds.
Walk with a squint.
And my favorite color is Bloody Arrow Red.   >:D

Yes that is correct, no shipping before December 15th and no later than January 15th unless someone has good reason why this is a bad idea.

Any reasoning for thinking its too late? The last thing I want is a bunch of guys not being able to finish in time and this gives people some cushion time in case every day life gets in the way or they are busy for the holidays. Plus people can have plenty of time to put allot of time and effort into thier gift rather than just slam something out. Thanks for the input though fish, if you want to finish your gift this week and have time then that is fine but not every one may have as much free time as others to finish their gift.

when do we find out who we are supposed to make a bow for?

Youngbowyer  This is not a bow trade just for info, if you would like you can make a bow for the person you get but if you re read my first post it should anwser your questions and give you an idea of what the exchange is about. You can also do a search for last years trade and get some ideas of some of the stuff people made, look at my first post on page 1. The sign up cut off is oct 1st at midnight so you should get the name and address of the person you are sending a gift to by no later than the 5th I would think depending how many people we get involved and how long it takes to get the names out. Hope this helps

Thanks Ifritz for picking up on that for me, The only thing I would add is

From the way I see it, it really doesnt have to be primitive just something made with your own two hands. Someone was saying they got home made Jam last year so dont be supprised if thats what you get. You just never know what you might get so as long as it was made by hand that is the rule. If you need more info on your recipient PM me and I can get that for you.

Calendargirl is working away on getting a spread sheet made and you will get your name asap.

Greetings All,

So here are some initial shots of the wood I'll be using for the "Old Sage" staff I'm building for my Christmas Recipient.
Harvested this old branch, of mostly heart wood, off of my Uncle's place in Fairfield, TX. back on July 4th of this year.
It was a dead branch hanging on a living Osage tree. She sure looked rough on the outside, but you can see the pretty wood revealed on the end grain.
Working her down with Paint Scraper, Carving Knife, Cabinet Scraper and to a lesser degree Farriers Rasp.

If this is posted in the wrong place please feel free to move it.   :)

Thank You.

Nope, not done yet...haven't really started yet cause I need to read up and do a little "research" on my recipient.  Sure does feel weird, like a "Stalker" weird, to pick out a persons name and read a bunch of their threads and such...but it is probably the best way to make sure you pick the right type of gift for the person.

here is mine, i am doing 2 and going to send the best one, I always need my back scratched and the wife isnt always around so I will keep one of these ;D they are both made of tight grained Yew wood and I may leave the bark on one but I havent decided yet. Sorry for the small pictures, I might add a little deflex to the one that is almost done as it has a slight amount of reflex. The one with the bark on has a good amount of deflex so it should work good. ;D

Here's probably the final update (got to keep some element of surprise).

Still got a couple hours worth of sanding to do on the club.  I forged the spike out of a bolt I found in an old railroad tressle piling, but I got it a little too thin at the tip so I'm going to redo it.  I want to make sure it's plenty beefy should the recipient want to throw it any.

I have a question for everyone involved in the trade.  I seemed to have messed my knee up pretty bad.  I have an apointment with an orthopedic doctor to find out just how bad.  Right now I don't feel like working on anything in my shop.  If I don't improve in time to make something, would it be OK to give a couple of nice staves?  There is a lot of time and work to get a tree to stave form.  Hopefully I am able to make something, but I want to have a back up plan in place to make sure my person doesn't get left out.  I'm just looking for some honest opinions.

Clint, you certainly put your all into harvesting the staves. In a situation like this I see no problem but a consensus should be reached by all involved.

Ok with me...they wouldn't be staves if you had not done some work with them. ;D

And on the greedy side....if you had my name ....I'd rather get a stave than nothing!! >:D :)

More importantly, I pray that you get healed up!  Your health is more important than projects or gifts or staves.

Good news!  I got in to the doctors today due to a cancellation and found out about the knee.  I have severe tendonitis.  Nothing is tore or broken so that's good.  He gave me some anti-inflammatory pills and vicodin :o  and said to give it 6-8 weeks and see how its going.  I should be able to get back in the shop soon and get started on something.  Thanks for all the support and opinions, it is much appreciated :)

Looks like the makings of a Fine Blade Mr. Bailey...  :)

Got the fine sanding done on the Ole Sage Staff, out to six hundred grit.
Now building up the finish, five coats of CA Glue so far.

Next step is to sand the CA Glue down.
This is the delicate part. I'll sand with only 600 grit till smooth.
As long as I can get it smooth without sanding through to wood, the next step will be Polishing.
If sanding goes awry, then its more coats of CA Glue and another try at finish sanding.  :)

Three pics of final touches before CA Glue coats.
Three pics after application of CA Glue coats.

Thank You.

Here is another try at what my Exchange is..... Had to post picture separate from the description??

                                                               HUNT THE WIND…

Knowing the wind is critical to hunting success.  Hunt the wind with “The Airplane”.

                                                            (picture should be here) :-[

“The Airplane” is almost but not quite like the “Firefly”.

The entire design was copied from an old weathervane made close to 100 years ago. Using NO advanced flow analysis and the result is a fairly accurate, kind of sensitive, wind detection device a hunter can trade for.

“The Airplane” is not a sophisticated instrument.  And is NOT designed using any of the latest technology.  It’s suggested retail is not $59.95.

For low wind conditions you may have to stick your finger in your mouth to wet it and hold your finger up and feel which is the cool side…..the cool side indicates which side the wind is coming from.

Also included is a pod of milkweed that is “Ultra” sensitive to low wind and even thermals when hunting from a stand.  Just pull a small tuft of silky seed material from the pod and release and watch.

Hope all of this helps you “HUNT THE WIND”.

Lowell

Post by: lowell on October 27, 2011, 08:28:31 pm
Elktracker,   Yes, I totally made it.

The retail price part is just a spoof of the "Firefly" wind detector!! >:D

I was working on a job and the customer had the original hanging on his wall and I copied it...with his permission.  He thought something like his dad's uncle...or some relative had made the original.

I`ve caught a bad cold- the positive in this state is, that I could have finished my gift at Saturday. I`m thinking of making a bit more of decoration to it, before I start the adventure of shipping and customs to the US.
Pictures should be done by the new owner.- It should be a little surprise, shouldn`t it?

Yes Sir...

Sorry about the Hook...  8)
I was tempted to post the finished photo but where is the fun in that.
There should be a little bit of a supprise left for the new owner.

I'll just say that at present this is one of my best.
The rich color and iridescence of this staff are Excellent!
Gave me the chance to incorporate a lot of the techniques I've learned in my short time bow building.
This piece is my forty first staff/walking stick and took just over two hundred hours to finish.
Only have a little packing work to do, but will be ready to ship on December 10th.

Have to say that the Excitement of wanting to see this staff in the hands of her master is nearly unbearable!!!  :)

Come On Christmas!

I changed my mind completely this morning and decided to do a knife instead.  Started forging down an odd shaped piece of saw steel and was starting to forge in the bevels when I got distracted and melted it in the forge.  Started on another piece and messed up and ended up with a cold shut on the edge.  Decided it was time to set it aside and work on something else for a while.  I'll have to file out that cold shut before I can move any father on it.

Sorry to hear this, but it seems to be a problem in the dark months of the year. Even here in Germany suicides rise up in this time before Christmas. Depression, familar problems and problems with money, "no ways out" are the main reasons.

I`ve send out my trade item last Friday, but forgot "to put a few words into". Hope it arrives at Holy Night. I`ve written on it: Don`t open before Dec. 24!

It has been brought to my attention that one of the participants in the christmas exchange is going through some very tough times since Oct. and is not able to be at there house and doesnt have access to a computer due to the situation that person is in. After getting all of the facts and talking to this person I have made the decision that we need to find a volunteer to build a gift for this persons recipient as they will not be able to because of the situation they are going through. I dont think that this person should be taken completely out as in not recieve a gift because with the hard ships this person is going through the gift this person recieves will hopefully help bring spirits up.

So I need a volunteer to help one of our fellow PA brothers out in his times of hardship. I am still in the process of getting the info as to who he was building for and there address so when I get it I can get that info to the person that steps up to help out. I also realize that it wouldnt leave the person volunteering allot of time to complete the gift on such short notice but that person would be givin extra time to complete the gift if need be.

I will say that the person who is dealing with these issues is a great guy from talking to him and watching him on here through the bow trade and his hardships right now are pretty serious. Thanks again

Josh

Maybe we can get several guys to make something small to send, so the recipient gets a "gift basket" of sorts.  I know I've got a thing or 2 in mind I could knock out in a hurry, but don't know that I'd have the extra time in the next month to make something bigger.

Mine is forged and most of the grinding is done.  Gonna be a real busy next couple of weeks, though so it might ship out after Christmas.  Hopefully it's worth the wait.

I said no mailing before the 15th!!, this is just unexceptible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if you all wanna go ahead and mail your gifts early then go ahead!!! Your all like a bunch of kids wanting to open a present on the day before christmas! LOL

All kidding aside I dont see why people couldnt mail a day early if they want or its more convenient for them, its better than a day late ;D ;) Look what you started JohnK you let one kid do it ya have to let them all! ;)

I agree with Patb When you recieve and open your gift weather it be christmas or earlier or after christmas make sure you post pictures ON THIS THREAD and let the person know who sent it to you that it was recieved.

I will also be starting a seperate thread to keep track of who has shipped and recieved there gift so look out for that thread as well.

Mine's forged, ground, and ready for heat treating.  If I was going to be around next week I could probably get it out the door before Christmas.  We've been invited to tour the White House though, so I'll be out of town for a few days.  If I get out out it'll be by the skin of my teeth.  Otherwise it'll be the week after.

Dedo ell ! Your all like a bunch of kids wanting to open a present on the day before christmas!

That's right Josh.. Like my classroom. If one goes to the potty they all have to go potty. If one gets a Kleenex they all need one and if one sharpens their pencil they will all line up to sharpen their pencil too even if they have a sharpened pencil... Cognitive disonance.. That's what that is.. That's why I like this  community so much. Y'all are all like a bunch of kids

Mine is about finished and should go out Saturday. Diego and I made our gift together.  Last February when we had a week long freeze two palm trees planted where we attend church died.  When they cut the brances off I took them home.  We made crosses from them and the palm wrapping.  The girls, Diego and I made over 50 crosses from those dead branches and gave them away.

In July when we camped at the coast another fisherman caught this redfish. It had swallowed the hook and was going to die.  The man that caught it was not going to tag it and was going to toss it back.  He asked me if I wanted it and I gladly took it.  I kept the scales and they make great guitar picks.

I'm working on part of my gift and I have a question.  Which would work better, super glue or 5 minute epoxy?  I'm trying to glue stretchy cord inside of a hole drilled in a chunk of antler.  The hole doesn't go all the way through the antler.

When I got home my family was not yet home from errands in town. I was cooking dinner when they got home so I made them wait until after dinner to see what was in Lowells box.  The Airplane weather vane according to my 3.5yo granddaughter "It's pretty." It is a beautiful piece of work. Now I just got to figure out where to put it up. There are pics of it earlier in this thread - I will add some more after I get it up somewhere around the house.

Hope you all had a great Christmas.

I recieved my gift from Rick Wallace.  It was so awsome when I opened it.  Inside was a letter from rick explaining about the gift, also a very nice Christmas card from his family to mine.  The gift was a set of 4 knives that he made for "butchering critters"  which I do alot of so these very nice hand made knives will come in very handy.  Also they have bark sheaths that rick also made, rolled up in a burlap pouch that says, "Made in USA".  Thank you so much Rick.

I hoped my recipient would get his gift by Christmas, but I saw he posted today, so it must not have made it.

Will post pics soon.

Thanks again Rick for the fine gift.

Hey clan,
Just got a neat gift from Ron in San Jose(don't know his user name).  A scalping knife in a great rawhide sheath with handle slabs from my old playground in Nebraska.   My wife took notice when I told her that a scalping knife had come to me in the mail!
Also a unique gift that puzzled my brain until Ron explained it to me-an arrow rake made from an arrow shaft and a nice turned wood handle and the "pick" is a piece of antler.  I can use it to scratch around for my arrows that tunnel under grass and leaves.  Really a neat idea-fits in a quiver so it can go along every time.
Great thing too was that Ron and I had a connection throught the great area of Western Nebraska and he put some thought into doing something nice for me.  I will try to get some picks up in a day or so. You folks will really appreciate the work.
Thanks again Ron!

Hint: it's made from wood and stone and might bring in dinner if you use it right.

I got home last night from Christmas vacation (spent it much warmer down south) and had a box waiting for me from Tell (Rileyconcrete).  It was a very nice knife with maple burl scales and a sheath.  It fits perfect in the hand and will get much use.  Tell is a true craftsman!

Well I just recieved my gift from (Hawkbow)  :) I never recieved a note with it so I am not sure what draw length or weight is but it appears to be a short Oak board bow with a snake skin backing. The string appears to be artificial sinew. I included some pictures of the bow after unwrapping it and will have to wait untill tonight to get a full draw after I find out what the full draw is?? I havent gone any further than braceing it untill I hear from Hawkbow so I will wait for that as well. Nice little bow Hawkbow and thank you very much!

So I got the money shot of the bow Hawkbow sent me, I still dont know what draw length was intended but I figured 21" wasnt to much to ask for this size bow :) Still not possitive on the draw weight but it feels like about 20# @ 21"

Hawk has been working out of town for some time now!  I can tell you some of the information about the bow.  We all made one of these horse bows while at a pow wow in Texas with Ramblin Randy!  It should draw @ 21" and am surprised at the low poundage.  Randy has killed more deer and hogs than anyone I know and lots of them were killed with one of his short draw horse bows.  I sinued mine and it has a very tough draw weight.  The snake skin is a real story.  We were returning to camp in a pickup when this huge snake crossed the road in front of us and went into the thick brush.  Hawk and another fellow jumped out of the back and with a flash light followed the snake into the brush.  Hawk shot it square through the head with a very ugly stone point I had given him.  The snakes mouth was propped open by the blade and arrow shaft.  Was an unbelievable sight.  That skin would have made a backing for three of those horse bows.  Stacey Huston has some pictures of the snakes head!  On another note, I have elk hunted all those hills around the Tillamook area and several years around Reedsport!  Thanks for the effort to put all this exchange together.  It must have been frustration at times.  A/Ho Joe

Thanks for the info Wolf watcher I really appretiate it! I havent had the bow on a scale yet I am just going by how it felt compared to some of the bows I have made and I know there draw weight, I dont mind having a lighter weight bow at all I have shot about 50 shots out of it and my wife has shot about the same she really likes it because of the lighter draw weight, it shoots really well and I am honored to now own it. Thats a pretty cool story on the snake skin thanks for shareing. I really enjoy hunting the area around here as there is always lots of action, thanks again for the info If you hear from Hawk let him know I really like the bow!

Howdy,  I received my gifts ~ 2 weeks ago and then left on vacation.   I've been back a while, but I've been a little slow getting pic taken and posted.  Northernsport made up a sort of macrame choker that includes a muskrat skull and the mandibles from a mink.  I doubt I'll wear it every day, but I think it goes well with my Lakota type outfit.   Then just cause he grabbed a knife and a couple of decals of the shelf and threw them in the box, too.
The knife isn't homemade, but I'll find a use for it.   After all how many of us on this forum can say "I have too many knives"?    Now how many can say it with a straight face?(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc270/May-Pumphrey/IMG_0275.jpg)(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc270/May-Pumphrey/IMG_0285.jpg)(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc270/May-Pumphrey/IMG_0286.jpg)

Just wanted to give everyone a sneak peak of what I'll be shipping out tomorrow. Hopefully the recipient likes this neck knife. It's only my second attempt at a knife. Full disclosure I didn't make the blade myself, not well enough along yet with those skills. I did make the handle and the sheath for it though. Enjoy.

Got me a sweet osage character bow from fishfinder401 today, one pic on page 11 of shipping and receiving thread.  Been out shooting it, all I can say is AWESOME!  I'll try to get more pics up later.  Thanks Again Noel, shoots great, fast and accurate.  dpgratz

I woke up this afternoon and noticed a long package on the front porch.  I busted through the door and I found this.

I thought for sure that what was inside was surely broken.  I picked it up and the package was almost ripped in half at the bend.  I slowly peeked inside expecting the worse, but was suprised to find an intact bow limb.  I finished tearing the package apart and pulled out a beautiful Native American style bow from Mark Anderson.  It has a turkey beard on one nock and some bead/antler work with a turkey feather on the handle.  This is my first NA style bow and I love it.  I am the only one home today so I couldn't get a FD shot.
