My back's been very sore since the wreck. Finally this morning it felt good enough to go out to the shop, over 2 weeks from the last time. I got a spall out to try for a knife blade. I've been obsessed with getting a blade done. But, I wasn't very far when....

The next one was even more narrow, but I gave it a shot anyway. And finally..... ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have an old spike rack that has a tine I think will work to make a knife handle.

I'm gonna rest the back a bit and then try and haft it up. Now, if I can just keep from dropping it and breaking the blade....

It's a crying shame it broke. You done well with the second one. Can't wait to see it hafted.
-
Looks good, glad to see your gettin over the soreness.

I have it hafted up, but need to clean up and seal the sinew wrap. I like it though.

that turned out nice George, Bub

Made a couple points this afternoon. Snapped off a corner on the first one, but the second one came out OK. It was super thin on the point end and about a half inch thick on the base end. It was a fight with step islands the whole way. Had one real thin notch I had to open up to match the other one. Can't seem to put 2 good notches together on a point. Ended up 160gr.

Looks like a pen knife! Love it! Great point too boot.
-
Like the knife, George, you did good. The point's a killer, too.
-
Thanks Eddie, Bub and Tower, it was sure nice to get back at it. And thanks JimBob, I do feel a little better. I did a little draw knife work, but it was pretty hard on the back so I stopped. I think I'm making progress though and that's good news. :)

Thanks, it has been good therapy. In my case Russ, the pickup that caused the accident came down onto the expressway on an off ramp and drove into traffic going the wrong way. I'm very fortunate there was a vehicle between me and them and that driver is fortunate they didn't head-on directly so nobody died. Divine intervention I think.
Patrick, I'm finally starting to be able to drive flakes all the way across the piece. It sure took a long time. I'm not ready to toss the copper and go ABO like you have though...at least not yet. Thanks for taking the time to teach me. I know it was slow going that first time. Looking forward to when we can get together and I can get another lesson.

Beautiful knife George, great points to boot ....hope the back don't give you to much trouble

I missed this one somehow. That turned into a real sweet little knife George! Always easier to flake narrower blades for a while and build up to the wider ones. Missed the jeep wreck to gonna check it out.

George, after deer season ends, I should be out at the least once or twice a month. Looking forward to meeting up with you again.

That sounds great! I'll look forward to it. Starting about Feb1 I hog hunt around twice a month so I would think we could get together. On that note, I just landed a potential hog spot a little under an hour (43 miles) from home. I'm really excited to go see what's there. We may have to run a feeder awhile to get hogs coming in, but we'll see. Hope to go see it this weekend.
Interestingly, I got my second knife finished up tonight. I had worked on it an hour or so on Sunday. This rock had several very hard spots in it that were lighter colored than the rest of the stone. It was easily the most difficult knapping I've done so far. Amazingly it came out, though with some steps I could not get out. I hafted it up to a mule deer antler for a friend I built a bow for. He'll be excited when he gets it. This one I think I can call a neck knife.

I took a picture of it with the knife I started this thread with.

Those look real good George, looks like you're getting the hang of knapping!
Hey, I had some back issues last year and thought I might share what helped me. Mine wasn't caused by any specific trauma that I know of. I was just crouched over patching some concrete in my basement floor one night, and the next morning I woke up with an aching back. It persisted for about 6 months. I went for about 30 chiro "adjustments" and that didn't seem to be doing anything. Just when I'd get a few days of reduced soreness, I'd do something to aggravate it again. I finally got enough sense to go see a physiotherapist and she gave me some basic stretching exercises to do. Didn't really seem to help at first, but once I started doing them on a regular basis 3 times a day, all my aches disappeared. I was quite surprised. Might be something to look into if you haven't already.
Take it easy anyway buddy. Hopefully it improves soon!
