Title: crack in the ring layers
Post by: luke the drifter on November 30, 2011, 09:42:04 pm
here is my dilemma.  about half way up the stave and if you look at it from the side, i have a crack about three of four inches long.  it appears to be a rotten spot.  the length of the affected area is no more than four or five inches.  for lack of better description, it is a layered crack(delineating?).
the top of the area and the bottom are in great shape around it.  any ideas or is it a lost cause?

What kind of wood?  May be wind shake.

Would it be like the growthrings were seperated?  Kinda like when effing glass delaminates?

Sounds like wind shakes to me too.  It is a delamination between growthrings caused by the tree being torqued by strong winds or possibly when the tree was felled. Sometimes you get only a small shallow one in a stave but sometimes it runs from side to side.
