Title: Chittam wood Plan???

After covering my partners vacation and working 10hrs a day 12 days straight I could not wait to go play with some wood.

I post this stave here and got some good feedback ....

I'm asking again for some ideas this time about layout. One end of the stave is very clean but the other is full of knots.

What design would you use....

A bit more info wouldn't hurt, what style bow you wanting to make? What draw length and poundage you shooting for? I would agree with the guys on trad gang it will probably need backed as there apear to be some violations :-\ I tend to like wide limbs on most white wood like maybe 2" throughout most of the limb and I tend to make most of my bows around 62 to 68 long but really it all just depends what you want to do with it. I like blackhawks design he has been using lately with the wider limbs and the very narrow tips. Sorry not much help here but probably need more info for some of the more experianced guys to give better ideas on demensions. I would also go with a flat belly on this wood and again back it. I know Gordon has worked with this wood so maybe he will weigh in on this one too.

Thanks Josh, we are on the same page!! The limbs are just under 2"s for most of the bow. Only the last 6"s or so are none working. Made a little progress today. Strange to make the limb around Knots... Here's the knotty limb shaved down a bit... I hope this is what was meant by leaving wood around the knots?

after working it close to final weight I decided to reflex it and make some toast. We'll see how we did later...

Man you made quik work of that :D Looking good so far! What are you doing asking advise on here you know what your doing ;D ;) Have you thought about backing it? Also unless I missed it what draw length and weight you going for?

Josh tillering is my weakest thing...  I am shooting for 50#s but may back off a bit if the knots looks un-trustworthy. I am at 64"s now and want to see if I can do this without backing it. It may blow but I am trying to make the wood between the two last knots work a bit to relieve the stress and the last knot is in the non-working tip...  as far as knowing what I'm doing it's pure 100% luck and a whole bunch of great advise from all of you. This place and TG is treasure chest full of good stuff with a search and on the spot when I can't get the answer from the archives :) I can't imagine what it would be like for someone like me (this is bow #5) without you folks....  Thank you

If you do a search you will find some nice bows built with this wood :) This one looks like its gonna turn out great too!

This stave came out of Kansas so I think this is the tree...  or bush?
