Title: Tennesse Classic
Post by: BearG on December 30, 2011, 12:11:57 pm
Ok Christmas is over its almost 2012 and I'm ready for some Classic talk.  I for one hate to wish away my life, but man I can't wait.  At this time I am still planning on getting there Friday April 27, 2012.  If anyone wants to ride with me and can make it to Cincinnati or close I have room.  If you want to camp with us, just know I get up early stay up late, drink like a fish, and snore.

Anyways whats everyone elses plan????

Me and my son plan on going back down again this year.  We are on the West side of Cincy in IN.  We stayed in a local hotel last year.  This year we are taking the truck.  You can only fit so many staves in a 96 saturn.

I'm pretty sure Tracy F and I are coming down on Thursday.  BearG, I may need to camp in your area since you seem to be my kinda guy.  I don't like to get up early though, but I sleep sound.  ;)
This will be my first visit and I'm concerned about the time.  I'd like to make a bow, but I really need to be w/ others in the knapping pit too.  tick tock tick tock, dpgratz

Well my dream once again is to make it there.  Been saying that now for three years and have yet to make it.  Maybe this year is my year.  Just have to wait and see.  If I do make it, I will be there way early, and leave way late for sure.

I've already warned my wife that I intend to go this year.  NASA won't be shooting any tubes into the sky that weekend this year, so I should be safe.  It's a little early to start really planning yet, but any of you NC guys want to carpool?

My little woman is insisting that we go.  Maybe, it was her and Pappy's first kiss at the Elm Hall shoot.   :-* ;)

It will be our first visit to Twin Oaks.  Though she's not relishing the idea of camping in our primitive tent.  From Michigan, the 6 MPG motorhome would be way too costly in gas.  Miss Heather will be close to 7 months along a 9 month term, if you know what I mean.  Hopefully, she doesn't change her mind...

working on it-since i dont have a vehicle i trust driving that far right now am dependent on getting a fellow archer to go with. trying to talk wayne into it. he has a daughter and son in law in the area. but he works away from home and is only home on weekends, so he tries to be careful how many weekends he takes off for other things-all archery related of course! also have a young pal, kyle, how is working on his first bow and has a car that runs great! maybe i can talk him into it. so fingers are crossed that something works out. sure do wanna be there!

Badger, Glad to here you are going. Been wanting to meet you for some time now.  I am trying to get Juniper Junky and maybe a few more from the NW to go as well.

One thing about the Tenn Classic. It's like the biggest family reunion that you've ever been to. ;)

Lulyn and I are trying to pack our schedule this year with more Rendezvous and events. And as of right now February to June is going to be a blurr. But we are shooting for being at Tenn. in early May

Hey Charlie,

I may attempt to get to the classic this year but it depends on the weekend on whether or not I can make it. Got my first baby on the way in June, along with my little brother's wife being due the week before my wife is and my sister in law is getting married. So needless to say I have more than a few trips up to Western PA/Eastern OH I'll be making for different events with my wife. I think most of them are going to fall right around the weekend of the classic. I will let you know if I am going though once I figure that out.

Pappy:  I talked to Hawk Huston yesterday and he said he wants to come to the Classic if he can get away.  Last year I had planned to route thru S. Dakota and pick up J. W. "the Bird Man" Halverson, but he begged off at the last minute.  Would help me to make the long trip if he would agree to make the Classic this year.  Every time I see that elk hide it makes me feel bad because of the work you and Jesse had to put in on it!  Sounds like with the exception of Jesse that this year's Classic will set another record!  A/Ho Joe

Blackhawk, if you enjoy primitive bows both making and shooting them, flintknapping, pot luck dinner with lots of wild game, camp fires, music, great folks, and too many other benefits to mention...then you would enjoy the classic. The fact that you're on PA looking around tells me you must enjoy these type of events, and the Classic is as many will tell you the BEST of it's type available in many ways!  ;)

Are their stores nearby for supplies?
What is the earliest folks will be showing up? I was thinking of a couple days early if thats ok.
Are thier motels nearby? I might get a room one night or if weather gets bad for some reason.
I am going to assume plenty of venders with staves available so I won't bring any. Thanks Steve

Steve, If you stay at the Holiday Inn in Clarkesville you can eat the free breakfast with Calendergirl, and the rest of the staff at PA. Right down the road is Walmart and all kinds of restruants. Then just get on I-24 and head towards Nashville till you get to exit 19. Mike Mcguire and Gary Davis will have plenty of staves for sell along with a lot of other people from this site either selling or trading.

Motels about 10 miles away. If you don't mind staying with a bunch of red necks I will save you a spot in the cabin. :)I think I have 1 left if Joe/Hawk and Joshia shows up. Lot of vendors with wood and I can always hook you up with some TN.Osage/HHB/Elm/Hickory. We won't let you go without. ;) :)

Pappy, you might want to save the cabin spot in case a surprise guest shows up. If I had access to a shower every couple of days I am perfectly fine in my tent. If I could get 1 osage stave and one elm stave I would be entertained the whole week. I don't mind paying a fair price for them. I am really getting excited about this one. Last year I had planned to route thru S. Dakota and pick up J. W. "the Bird Man" Halverson, but he begged off at the last minute.  Would help me to make the long trip if he would agree to make the Classic this year.

I still feel bad about having to cancel out on you last year at such short notice, Joe.  Meanwhile, things are falling into place for this year.  As much as I hate being cooped up in a vehicle for more than two hours, I think the trip would be worth the effort.

Just one more hurdle to clear before I can say for sure.

Pappy:  Is there something in that list of possible trade items that would entice you to let go of one of your deer skins?  This seemed like a good idea when I was setting in my hell room with below weather outside and me needing a project or two to do.  My dad used to tell me that I would "let my alligator mouth over load my grasshopper rearend!"  I hope that is not the case this time.  I have asked for some spiritual help to keep this from being one of those "what was I thinking moments.   :-[  A/Ho Joe

blackhawk I won't be wearing it  ;) :) I want it for later,I will be wearing a 15  Annual Classic shirt ;) ;D ;D or the members traditional Orange TwinOaks Shirt from Friday -Sunday so everyone can find a member if needed. :) :) I am really getting excited and it is still 3 months away. Steve [Badger] emailed me and if all workes out he is coming in early[maybe Monday] so for the ones that show up early will get some time to pick his brain. Who knows I may start weighing bows when this is over. ;) ;D ;D ;D Lots of brains to pick at the event/shoot/gathering just to little time. :)

Sweeeeet....looks like ill get to build alongside some cagey vets....those are always good times....yeeeeah ...

@Pappy...I know your a stubborn ole hoot....and why change a thing with what you do when it works for you....BUT...I started weighing and tillering per mass and am glad I did,and have seen a big difference in my bows...I went from average joe bow bows to making some screamers every now n then. Faster means a flatter trajectory....unless your ole eyes need a slow arrow so you can see what your hitting then don't change a thing....im just jabbing at ya man ;)...feel free to jab me back ;)

Not my well seasoned meat. ;) >:D >:D You are right blackhawk slow arrows are cool. :) :) I will let you young whipper snappers turn out the fast stuff, slow and steady is fine with me. :) I will say I love to see the improvements that have been made in wood bows [at least what I have seen] since I started 20 something years ago. Its fun and very interesting to watch ,I am just to hard headed to change much. :) :)

Post by: GregB on February 01, 2012, 03:09:32 pm
Pappy's bows spit an arrow faster then most, I know because I've shot the majority of them and have one he gifted me. If his arrows aren't as fast as some, it is more due to a shorter draw length than the bows design. I know his arrows bring home meat every year and have for how many years straight???  ;)

Can a deer really tell the difference in an arrow going an average primitive speed of 150-160 and a screamer bow arrow going 170-190...... ::) ::) A shot in the kill zone is a dead deer...I just like my bows to shoot good!
Title: Re: Tennesse Classic
Post by: JW_Halverson on February 01, 2012, 11:50:12 pm
If arrow speed was the one and only thing that mattered, I would seriously look into a Matthews from the local dealer.  He's a great guy, an incredible hunter, and a man with ethics that are unassailable.

...and then I would go right back to scraping wood!
Title: Re: Tennesse Classic
Post by: mullet on February 02, 2012, 01:22:37 am
When I hunted at Pappy's arrow speed never came into the equation. The stand I was sitting on was about 12' off the ground and the first deer I had a chance at was  4 yards.
The second one was at less then 6 yards.

AND  ;) ;D ;D ;D   Not over the top at all blackhawk once you get to know the guys I run with you will see not much of anything is over the top. ;) :) I tell new guys in the club all the time ,it takes thick skin to hang around here, most toughen up and fit right in. :) They say I am pretty over the top myself sometimes. :) I think we all understand that speed ant what we are after or we would do like JW said, but we all want to build the best performing/easy tuning and shooting bows we can and still keep it as natural as possible. I tell folks all the time, nothing especially primitive about my bows,I just like to build wood bows. I will say ,there will be some of the very best wood bow builders at this event that have ever gathered anywhere. Some you have heard of and some you haven't but still awesome at what they do.I get impressed every year. :) :) :)

Pappy, I agree. I shoot the most plane jane bows you could possibly imagine. I don't even wrap the handles and seldom sand them beyond my scraper. But I do enjoy tweaking them out a bit for a little more snap. Avoiding excessive set and keeping the outer limbs reasonable in width will produce decent performing bows all day long. I have a short 26" draw so can use all I can get.

Got word this morning that the Fates cannot be fooled with.  I cannot distract them nor obfuscate well enough to keep 'em off my tracks.  They were on to me all along.   :(

Not gonna make it this year, either.  Unless someone from this area may be going that way and I can pitch in for gas money.

I am the one that stinks as I had planned on JW riding with me to Clarksville.  Well, white eyes have never been able to trust us Indians and sure enough I went and booked a hunt in Namibia at close to the same time as the Classic.  Now JW is setting in South Dakota with plans to share his personality with the good folks at Twin Oaks and no ride.  Just wish some one would swing by and pick him up!  Am sure it would be a trip you would always remember.  Maybe I could do like every group with a cause and apply for a grant.  I will really miss all the fun at the Classic, even the rain!  A/Ho Joe

Joe had to choose between being trapped for days with me in his pickup driving down to Tennessee or flying to Namibia with his daughter.  Personally I think it's a no brainer and he made the right call.  Heck, I'd rather go to Africa with his daughter, too!

Have fun Joe, take lotsa pictures!

The airline tickets right now look like they'd run a bit under $500.  That's a bigger bite than I can take right now.  UNLESS I get this contract with the South Dakota GF&P for this summer.  If that happens, I might just have to reconsider.....

Unless I can figger out someone to split the drive with.  Anyone in the Northern Tier thinking of going????

As much as I have tried to make it work, it don't look like I will make it again this year.  So many things to blame, but mostly the cost to drive there will be out of my reach I am afraid.  I still have a few irons in the fire that many come through, but as of right not, things don't look promising.  I think I will start a "Twin Oaks" savings account and contribute to it each month for next year so I can assure myself I can get there.  Maybe some day.

It makes me sad to read about the Classic since I will miss this year!  Had a chance to go to Namibia hunting with my daughter at a good price. Maybe this will be my last great hunt away from home (getting old) so am making the sacrifice.  Will miss seeing all the truly talented people at the farm.  Am letting Mr. Halverson down also as he was going to go with me to meet all you folks.  Am planning to send some stuff for the raffle and wonder if you might make a suggestion as to what I should make?  Sure was looking forward to meeting Mason, Shannon's son!  A/Ho Joe

I just received my new copy of Primitive Archer magazine in the mail...and there is a great article by Stim Wilcox on last year's Classic....

I have wanted to shoot selfbows for several years now...either buying one or making one...and this looks like the place....my wife is interested as well..she has been shooting her longbow about a year...so she loves going to shoots with me....and the fact that we can make a stop in Nashville, which we have always wanted to visit....2013 looks like we might attend.....

It's 789 miles from Lancaster...and it means not making it to Baltimore's Trad Shoot two weeks later..but it is one I want to attend at least once....soo, vacation approval permitting...we will head south in 2013!

Welcome to PA, Lee. Good to see you here.
As far as I'm concerned the Tenn. Classic is the "go to" archery event of the year. It would take a disaster for me to miss it.
I met and got to spend some time with Stim Wilcox last year at the Classic. He is a very nice guy with an incredible knowledge for building selfbows. I was quite impressed with the sapling bow he built while talking to a crowd and all in about 20 minutes. It wasn't the prettiest bow you have ever seen but it shot well and thats what it is all about anyway.
Stim's book on building selfbows is a very good teaching aid for the wanna be and experienced bowyer alike.

Welcome to PA Lee...your on the wrong side of the state buddy ;) ...have u been up to denton(ETAR..eastern traditional archery rendevous)? Theres always a healthy number of selfbow guys up there, including me n some buddies. Just approach some selfbow guys n ask questions, cus more than likely they made them themselves. Maybe start a thread of your own asking if anyones around your area to help you make your own bow. The fun in shooting a selfbow is shooting a bow you make yourself, not buying one. If i was closer id def help ya out.

blackhawk,

thanks...when i ran TradTech Archery, I had a vendor booth at ETAR every year...before that I used to attend, and this past year, due to being out of work, I could not make it.

This July, my wife and I have a campsite reserved at Potter County Family Campground, site #9 I believe, so we will be there.  When it gets closer we can pick a time and place to meet up.  I would enjoy meeting and visiting with you and others.

Stim gave me a copy of his book when at ETAR when I ran TradTech....and I watched his presentation at Baltimore Bowmen Traditional Classic:

Thanks everyone..Pat, I've been registered here for a while, but was content to just lurk....don't know much about primitive stuff..but that is next on my to do list.......

As of now, I will be heading to the classic this year....FINALLY!!.  Since it might be a long time before I make another one, I am going to get there the week before, and stay until the first of the week after, unless Pappy gets tired of seeing me...lol

I plan on coming down late Thursday night, probably get there about 4am-ish on Friday, just when Pappy's wakin up it appears by his posting times.  ;D  I've got a question about arrow points and the range.  I usually shoot blunts and sometimes duplex, but what are we shooting @ the targets there?  Regular field points?  Just thought I'd ask, don't want to show up and not be able to shoot.  Thanks guys, I'm gettin excited now!! dpgratz

Very interesting read about the Stim Wilcox hatchet bow. Would love to see a video of him making a hatchet bow! Talk about skill he has it! Does anybody know where he will be doing this next?

Why do I get the feeling his hatchet is sharp enough to skin a nitecrawler?  Not like the usual one that is so dull you take two swings to cut a stick of butter.

I agree, it'd be fun to watch his demo!

Me and the wife have been looking over our financial situation/bills trying to find out where the money would come from to pay for our trip to the Classic.  I figured that with the cost of gas and food it would be around $300.  When I got the mail today there was a reimbursement check from our sons orthodontist.  Seems insurance covered a little more than they had figured.  Guess what amount the check was for........$290  ;D  Now if I can just keep the wife from spending it for the next 3 weeks  ::)

He is not into archery but has been a boyscout all his life so I think he will enjoy it especially if we can fit his musical instrument in ! He plays the standup bass so I am sure that will fit in down there !
He is concerned about how I will do if it turns off rainy so I won't mention the fun you folks have had in the rain!

My son Isaac is all about this trip to TN.  He wants to bring the bow we are working on and likes the idea of trading stuff.  He has been bugging me all week about what he could trade and what others might want.  I suggested that he dig some blood root that we have here in Iowa in hopes that someone might be interested.   Blood root is a root that can make a powerful dye for feathers leather and cloth.  The internet says it dyes stuff red if you add other stuff, salt I think, but I mostly get a real deep orange color to it.   Around here blood root is hard to find so we only take every other plant and only look every other year.  Anyway he found about 20 roots so far.  Please let me know if anyone is interested in some kind of a trade for this primitive dye and I will let him know.

I think he really likes the idea of the trade and would be interested in anything primitive.  He is hunting for the root everyday so he should have enough for a couple of trades.  If you want to pm items you have I will have him read them and pm you back tonight.

Camping is free.  practice course will be open just register for the shoot (even know you won't be there) $20.00.  There is a raffle on Sunday but you don't need to be there to win. I'm not sure wear they stand on raffle items , but I'm sure if you want to donate an item it will make the table.  If I wrong about any of this I'm sure Pappy will let us know.

That black locust will keep me busy for awhile, I tend to chew through a lot of osage. Will be good to have something to keep me under control, that just reminded me to pack my reading glasses to chase the rings on that thing.

Badger, don't think you have to finish or even make a bow for me.  I don't want you to miss out on any of the festivies.  The stave is given as gift.  :)  I still haven't cut the other locust that I was hoping to.  Maybe I'll get to it, Saturday.  I got a lot to do before the Classic.

Pat, this year I'd like to see some of your bows in person.

I plan on bringing a few alone, Hedge.  Everyone should bring bows so we can all look them over. I've gotten lots of great ideas from other folks bows over the years.  ;)

Looks like I'll be down late Tuesday night!! :)  My lovely wife doesn't want me to wait so late to drive down. Gotta love her for that.  We have the chicken rollups and peppers already done, so, when I get home Tuesday from work and get the yard mowed (weather permitting) I'll load the coolers and be South bound. Can hardly wait. See everyone in a couple days.

Have a pyrometer sand and untreated Burlington.  I was wondering if any would interested in doing a heat treating experiment at twinoaks with me.  What we could learn would be how heat is transfered to the stone and at what rate and what temps are possible based on how the fire is maintained? Also how to maintain a temp once the target temp was reached.

Fair warning !  I'm on my way. I should get there Friday morning. I'm excited to get the chance to meet as many of you as I can, but equally dreading  the chance for all of you to see how poor of a shot I am.  I'm  hoping to prevail upon somebody's generosity  for the use of there grill as I can only carry so much gear in my big truck and a grill is out of the question.  I look forward to a very enjoyable time.  If you see a red Peterbilt, its probably me .  Please stop by and visit.  Josh
