Ok Christmas is over its almost 2012 and I'm ready for some Classic talk. I for one hate to wish away my life, but man I can't wait. At this time I am still planning on getting there Friday April 27, 2012. If anyone wants to ride with me and can make it to Cincinnati or close I have room. If you want to camp with us, just know I get up early stay up late, drink like a fish, and snore.
Anyways whats everyone elses plan????
-
Me and my son plan on going back down again this year. We are on the West side of Cincy in IN. We stayed in a local hotel last year. This year we are taking the truck. You can only fit so many staves in a 96 saturn.
-
I missed last year but I am coming again this year, My favorite springtime event! Me and my buddy Snakeman will be there the Thursday before... can't wait to see everyone! :) :) :)
-
how do i find out about this. what is it exactly? and where will it be?
-
I'm pretty sure Tracy F and I are coming down on Thursday. BearG, I may need to camp in your area since you seem to be my kinda guy. I don't like to get up early though, but I sleep sound. ;)
This will be my first visit and I'm concerned about the time. I'd like to make a bow, but I really need to be w/ others in the knapping pit too. tick tock tick tock, dpgratz
-
Well my dream once again is to make it there. Been saying that now for three years and have yet to make it. Maybe this year is my year. Just have to wait and see. If I do make it, I will be there way early, and leave way late for sure.
-
Hey Bear
I think I'll come in on Sunday this year. Save my spot. Look forward to seeing you there. Cracker
-
I've already warned my wife that I intend to go this year. NASA won't be shooting any tubes into the sky that weekend this year, so I should be safe. It's a little early to start really planning yet, but any of you NC guys want to carpool?
-

Mighty Joe, the Tenn Classic is the gathering of the year! We all show up and float the rivers while it rains buckets. :o :o We take turns standing along the banks shooting rubber blunts and the persons floating down stream. >:D >:D Sorry I just couldn't resist.... It all seriousness it's a great gathering at Pappy's ranch near Clarksville Tenn. Fantastic event1 Check out the Classic thread in "Events"

This is just another reason why i hate living in New York! Really wish I could get down there... :( :( :( ;D You guys sure are lucky.

Come on over, most of the other guys in the site sleep in too. I just always feel like I'll miss something.

I take it your talking about the Sunday before, correct Ronnie? And you know I'll save your spot.

The 15 th Annual Tennessee Classic is May 4th.-6th. 2012 @ TwinOaks Bowhunters 1079 Ashley Rd. Chapmansboro, TN.37035.
Mark (Pappy) and others are usually there the Friday before. If you send me you email I'll send you one of the flyers.
-
Bear, I was wondering how long after Christmas it would take for a "Classic" thread to pop up.
I'll be there but that's all I know for now. ;D

You know Pat I think Pappy should have 2 Classics a year. 8)
-
Bear I do indeed mean the sunday before. I wouldn't want to miss the laid back times before the crowd hits. Ronnie
-
Don't know for sure yet but I am putting in for the vacation time. Are there motels close?
BearG can I have a flyer?

We stayed at a Holliday Inn that was maybe 10-15 minutes away. There were a few other hotels around there but I can't remember what they were.
-
If all goes well, I intend to attend this year!....Jonathan Creason, maybe several of us NC "Rhyolite Destroyers" can go together this year.
Is the date set for April something?
but, it is turkey season you know? >:D

Sounds like a plan. Lets work on getting it finalized with the boss
-
will be going again this year can't wait and they moved the hickory shoot to the same weekend as the classic. don't think it was a good move .
-
Is that true, Brian. I guess they finally edged us trouble makers out! ::)
I've been going to Hickory for many years but I guess that just changed.
-
at the last cta shoot maggie told me that they were moving the shoot to another location and moved the date to the same weekend as the classic.
-
My little woman is insisting that we go. Maybe, it was her and Pappy's first kiss at the Elm Hall shoot. :-* ;)
It will be our first visit to Twin Oaks. Though she's not relishing the idea of camping in our primitive tent. From Michigan, the 6 MPG motorhome would be way too costly in gas. Miss Heather will be close to 7 months along a 9 month term, if you know what I mean. Hopefully, she doesn't change her mind...
-
Matt
I knew Miss Heather was a smart women !
Hope she's doing well !
See ya soon !

Hey All
Bear, You ain't kidding. As soon as Christmas is over, I start planning for the Classic. Heck, I cut out 5 more knife blades so I could start working on stuff to bring.
Can't wait.
Jon Cook
-
Bear, I concur! I WOULD make 2 Classics a year. If only.....!
Guys(and Gals) if you have a thought of going to the classic, GO!!! You won't regret it!...and bring the family! 8)
-
Is there anyone near or from the Washington DC or central Virginia area going to the classic?
-
working on it-since i dont have a vehicle i trust driving that far right now am dependent on getting a fellow archer to go with. trying to talk wayne into it. he has a daughter and son in law in the area. but he works away from home and is only home on weekends, so he tries to be careful how many weekends he takes off for other things-all archery related of course! also have a young pal, kyle, how is working on his first bow and has a car that runs great! maybe i can talk him into it. so fingers are crossed that something works out. sure do wanna be there!
-
Is there anyone near or from the Washington DC or central Virginia area going to the classic?
I don't think they allow politicians to go ;D
-
Sadie, not sure what state you are in but I will be comming out from Ca, maybe I could swing by and pick you up.
-
osage outlaw, why do you think I am trying to leave?? >:D
-
I am planning on coming down.
-
I'm planning on coming down Wednesday or Thursday ;D
-
I've already warned my wife that I intend to go this year. NASA won't be shooting any tubes into the sky that weekend this year, so I should be safe. It's a little early to start really planning yet, but any of you NC guys want to carpool?
If I could get the time off Id ride with ya. Thats still a ways off though.
-
Man this got started early, sounding good already. :) :) Thanks BearG ;) :) :) Pappy
-
Pappy: ::) Its never too early! On may drive home from the Classic I have a few days to think about all the doins and wonder if it will rain as hard at the next year's Classic! Then start counting the days till then and wondering a sad thought that this might have been my last one! :'( A/Ho Joe
-
I asked my wife if we were going to the Classic this year. She said without a pause in a very firm voice, "YEAAGH!" So, I guess she's going to make me go back to Clarksville this spring. :) Life is really tough with such a demanding wife. :)
-
I'll be there ;D And I'll bring the wife, too ::). I might need a camp site a little closer to the activities this year as I seemed to have a little trouble walking back to ine when it got late. :)
Steve, this will be great to finaly get to meet you, I'm glad you're going to make it.
Ronnie, what are we frying this year? I can bring a boat load of lizard.
-
I'd like to get in on some fried lizard! This is sounding better all the time!
-
Bear,if you still have room i would love to tag along.i am over in middletown.i'm going back this year even if i have to hitchhike.i met you down there last year.you guys seem like a fun bunch.if you still have room, shoot me a pm.i'll bing some gas money.
-
Hey Eddie lizzard is good squirrel heads on whatever long as it's made of meat. I got a bigger pot this year made myself out of a fifty gallon propane tank.Ron
-
Glad to hear you will be there Eddie. Main reason I am going is to get to meet some of you guys. I will be retired the month before the classic so looking forward to not having to rush.
-
Ronnie, I'll hopefully have a bunch of squirrel by then, to. Steve, you'll love it, rain and all. And there ain't no rush going on there, Looking forward to seeing ya.
-
Steve, it will be great to finally meet you.
-
Pat and Eddie we have already met at the last classic.i didn't get to spend alot of time with either of you.this year will be different.last classic was my first.KerryB was teaching me how to make a bow.his wife was sick and he had to leave early so i tended his booth and hung out with Keenan.Kerry is a great guy and it was the least i could do.i owe him alot.plus i got to hang out with Keenan.it was a great week and i can't wait to do it again.like i said,i will hitchhike if i have to.this year i plan on getting one of those basket quivers that you make Pat.those things are sweet.i saw the one you made for Keenans wife.very nice brother.anyway,i'll see you guys there.see you soon,Steve
-
Badger, Glad to here you are going. Been wanting to meet you for some time now. I am trying to get Juniper Junky and maybe a few more from the NW to go as well.
One thing about the Tenn Classic. It's like the biggest family reunion that you've ever been to. ;)
Lulyn and I are trying to pack our schedule this year with more Rendezvous and events. And as of right now February to June is going to be a blurr. But we are shooting for being at Tenn. in early May
-
Hey Charlie,
I may attempt to get to the classic this year but it depends on the weekend on whether or not I can make it. Got my first baby on the way in June, along with my little brother's wife being due the week before my wife is and my sister in law is getting married. So needless to say I have more than a few trips up to Western PA/Eastern OH I'll be making for different events with my wife. I think most of them are going to fall right around the weekend of the classic. I will let you know if I am going though once I figure that out.
Barry
-
Its good to see this thread already.
I can't wait to be there.......
-
Still going, Barry It is the first full weekend on May 4/5/6,come early and stay a while.Steve that's great news, :) :) I was hoping you would make it some day. :)
That is always the most fun to me is meeting all the new folks face to face and of course seeing all my old friends. It is truly like one big family. :) :) Joe I am sure hoping you are making it back this year,I heard you may be going to Africa. :( Can't
blame you for that but you would sure be missed. :) :)
Pappy
-
Pappy: I talked to Hawk Huston yesterday and he said he wants to come to the Classic if he can get away. Last year I had planned to route thru S. Dakota and pick up J. W. "the Bird Man" Halverson, but he begged off at the last minute. Would help me to make the long trip if he would agree to make the Classic this year. Every time I see that elk hide it makes me feel bad because of the work you and Jesse had to put in on it! Sounds like with the exception of Jesse that this year's Classic will set another record! A/Ho Joe
-
No problem with the Elk hide, taught me a lot and turned out nice,a few holes but nice and soft just the same, warm also. I hope it works out for you and Hawk and it would be great to have J.W. for sure. :) :)

B Dan
Hey Dan just whtever you feel like bringing will be fine. Ron
-
I'd be better off camping up near ya'll. Save walking and hauling meat. I'l bring some short, sawed ribs, too. And got a new batter box from Bass Pro, works great.
-
Hey Eddie I'm sure we could do a little jiggling around and make room for you and ma. Ron
-
;D
-
Geez...what's all the hype about??.. ???....its not even close to spring yet

Sounds like I wouldn't enjoy it then,cus I don't like harleys

Blackhawk, if you enjoy primitive bows both making and shooting them, flintknapping, pot luck dinner with lots of wild game, camp fires, music, great folks, and too many other benefits to mention...then you would enjoy the classic. The fact that you're on PA looking around tells me you must enjoy these type of events, and the Classic is as many will tell you the BEST of it's type available in many ways! ;)
-
I think I may just go to the Classic this year. Sounds like fun to me. ;D
-
Hey Jon it's such a long drive must be really rough what does it take 15--20 minutes?
-

Well..I DO enjoy making n shooting primitive bows,I dabble with a lil bit of rock,my stomach loves and wholeheartedly agrees with wild game,im a pyro,a former music dude, but not so sure I fall into the list of great guys...so it sounds like I need some more convincing ;) I think you know im just joking around here ;) :P
I've been to 3 different venues but haven't made the classic yet...im actually hoping to this year and crossing my fingers I can make it ;)
-
I guarantee you will like it. Make sure to bring some of that HHB and other trading items ;)
-
Not even a full week after Xmas! Bow artist and I will make plans to get down there Thursday morning. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and I'll try to leave all the rain up north ;) sure gonna miss not having Jesse in the pit-maybe we can setup a laptop and Skype him
Tracy
-
Hey Jon it's such a long drive must be really rough what does it take 15--20 minutes?
Yeah it's a long ways Cracker. 37 miles one way by gosh!
-
Pappy, I have a few questions.
Are their stores nearby for supplies?
What is the earliest folks will be showing up? I was thinking of a couple days early if thats ok.
Are thier motels nearby? I might get a room one night or if weather gets bad for some reason.
I am going to assume plenty of venders with staves available so I won't bring any. Thanks Steve
-
There are plenty of stores, restaurants, and hotels nearby. There are stave vendors there also. I will be bringing some osage to trade.
-
Man this post was started on dec 30 by bear and there is already 5 flipping pages? Wow and the classic is still how many months away... Anybody got a count on the hours or min yet?
Guess a few folks are just a bit excited.....
Yea well I am too. See y'all there.... I'm gonna go count the days :)
Wade
-
I really regret not making last years so I am going to really try and make it this year!
-
Steve, If you stay at the Holiday Inn in Clarkesville you can eat the free breakfast with Calendergirl, and the rest of the staff at PA. Right down the road is Walmart and all kinds of restruants. Then just get on I-24 and head towards Nashville till you get to exit 19. Mike Mcguire and Gary Davis will have plenty of staves for sell along with a lot of other people from this site either selling or trading.
-
Steve, any East Coast wood you might be interested in that you can't get in Cali? I'm sure we can find you some. ;)
-
Steve, plenty of stores near by for supplies. There will be some showing up the Saturday and Sunday before so come any time.I will be there from Friday before till the Monday after. Motels about 10 miles away. If you don't mind staying with a bunch of red necks I will save you a spot in the cabin. :)I think I have 1 left if Joe/Hawk and Joshia shows up. Lot of vendors with wood and I can always hook you up with some TN.Osage/HHB/Elm/Hickory. We won't let you go without. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Pappy, you might want to save the cabin spot in case a surprise guest shows up. If I had access to a shower every couple of days I am perfectly fine in my tent. If I could get 1 osage stave and one elm stave I would be entertained the whole week. I don't mind paying a fair price for them. I am really getting excited about this one. How many targets on the 3 d course?
-
Hey Badger they always have a shower set up in a tent up at the pavillion, hot water and all. Ron
-
You got it Steve. If you get there a day or 2 early we will take a ride to the the barn and you can pick out what you want yourself. I am around until the middle of the week ,after about Thursday morning I am a little hard to catch up with until way after dark. :) :) I do have room if you want to pack light. :)
Pappy
-
Well last year I said I was going and even promised to bring all sorts of things to trade and give away. I did not make it so this year I am not saying. BUT I sure hope I get to go and I sure am going to try to go.
Cipriano
-
Cipriano
Hope to see you there I'll have some stuff to trade and gift out as well. Ron
-
Cipriano, ihope you and your son can make the trip.i want to see that vest you made for your son out of that axis deer you traded me out of.i am sure it look very cool.
-
Cipriano, hope you can make it also. It is a great time for everyone[I think] ;) :) :)
Pappy
-

That's great ,let us know.King Ron has moved, not sure how far he is from the airport, but we will figure out something. :)
Pappy

-
Last year I had planned to route thru S. Dakota and pick up J. W. "the Bird Man" Halverson, but he begged off at the last minute. Would help me to make the long trip if he would agree to make the Classic this year.
I still feel bad about having to cancel out on you last year at such short notice, Joe. Meanwhile, things are falling into place for this year. As much as I hate being cooped up in a vehicle for more than two hours, I think the trip would be worth the effort.
Just one more hurdle to clear before I can say for sure.
-
Thats great news JW, love to meet you face to face, you seem to be right much of a character. [I mean that in a good way] :) :) meaning for will probably fit right in with the rest of us characters. :) :)
Pappy

Man looks like another good one shaping up. And 105 days until The Classic starts for me. And 63 days before I go down in March. My birthday present from the wife an all expences paid trip to Twin Oaks.
-
So Bear congratulations on the birthday present. Thats quite a woman. Wanna trade, my wife said why don't you just stay in TN? Ron
-
No Ronnie I think I'll keep her. But if she said stay I would.
-

Classic Trades Wish List: Shannon: turkey parts and meeting Mason! :) PappY: Deer skin! ;D Mullet: Coral! ;) Pat B: One of those fantastic woven quivers! :o Jackcrafty: one of those truly real arrows w/a bird point! 8) Cowboy: One of his trophy case points! John: string gig and lessons! ??? And the fellow from PA that makes the spiked throwing axes! :o
Possible things to trade: Stinky young buffalo skull, elk & white tail horns, hard drawn copper of different diamensions, Kudu mount, red hartabeast mount, tooled leather gun slings with Quick Detachable mounts; elephant leather quiver to be made, elephant leather chinks, tooled belts with your help in design and color (could be his & hers), burl table tops, walnut boards of wide and long lengths, raw hide drum and striker, lathe turned "whippen stick with case! Might think of other things to offer! Hope I am not asking too much! O:) A/Ho Joe
-
Forgot to mention can make a tooled leather gitar strap! A/Ho Joe
-
Pretty nice wish list Joe.I love a man with a plan. ;) :)
Pappy
-
String jig is made, and I have the material to make some strings. All set here Joe! :D
-
Coral is coming. ;)
-
Pappy: Is there something in that list of possible trade items that would entice you to let go of one of your deer skins? This seemed like a good idea when I was setting in my hell room with below weather outside and me needing a project or two to do. My dad used to tell me that I would "let my alligator mouth over load my grasshopper rearend!" I hope that is not the case this time. I have asked for some spiritual help to keep this from being one of those "what was I thinking moments. :-[ A/Ho Joe
-
My dad used to tell me that I would "let my alligator mouth over load my grasshopper rearend!"
Joe, I wouldn't worry about those fears but that quote is a CLASSIC and your Ol' Man had a great grasp of reality. (I often suffer from the same issue :-\ )
-
Joe I am sure we can work something out. ;) ;D ;D ;D Lee I have the same problem also. :) :)
Pappy
-
I have a few knifes/sheaths left over that weren't given as gifts for Christmas. May have some local river cane cut for arrows... ;)
-
Greg: Have you looked at what I am offering to trade? Would be an honor to have one of your knives! I hope to have time to make some things for trade. I lost my source of bladders for the canteens, so am worried about something to make for the Classic's raffle! A/Ho Joe
-
I'm going to try to get at least a few knives made up by then to barter with.
-
Joe I am sure we can work something out. ;) ;D ;D ;D Lee I have the same problem also. :) :)
Pappy
LOL >:D I think with all your friends and lovely wife your problem can't be all that great my friend. Just a continual up hill character development path for this man...always upward never slowing 8)
-
Joe, no need for trading...all you've already done for me in the past, one of my knifes will be yours if you want it friend!
-
A year ago someone had posted some pics of small polled hand axes they were making and bringing to the Classic. Anyone remember who it was and if they will be there this year. I feel a certain "need" for one.
NOT SAYING I'M COMING OR ANYTHING (fingers crossed behind my back, pinch of salt over the left shoulder, turning counterclockwise in my path).
-
I forgot his name but he came from Pennslyvannia with RyanO and Bob. They were nice. Are you going to bring your old butt This year?
-
Mullet: Am going to try and sounds like J W will be helping me drive and probably making me laugh. Don't Know about Josiah Huston yet! I have a couple of small wood slabs that I used to make clocks out of. Maybe your wife would like one of those? A/Ho Joe
-
I forgot his name but he came from Pennslyvannia with RyanO and Bob. They were nice. Are you going to bring your old butt This year?
Eddie I don't know if it's the same guy or not but Chris Ireland was there last year. Ron
-
Joe;
I was talking about JW's old butt. Ronnie, I think that's who it was.
-
My butt ain't THAT old, Mullet, and unlike some people's heads, mine still has all it's hair! I've even found ways to grow it out my ears!
-
My butt ain't THAT old, Mullet, and unlike some people's heads, mine still has all it's hair! I've even found ways to grow it out my ears!
I've managed to keep all the hair on my head so what's you're secred for the ear hair? Is it anything like nasal hair?
-
I'm 32 and can only grow hair out of my right ear. Maybe I'll refrain from plucking until the classic so I can show it off ;D It kind of looks like a small daddy longlegged spider crawling out :o
-

Heck you know it Brother. Save the couch for me, I should roll in around noon or earlier on Friday the 16th. >:D
-
More like the event of a lifetime !!
Guy
I would agree with that my friend.
-
For the people that use the forum here and are going to the Classic, you should wear two nametags....one with screen name and one with the one you wear around in public.
-
I've been dreaming of coming down for along time....this year I'm gonna make it..come hell or high water I'll be there...I might have to skimp on a few things to make it though( Like Valentines day, the wife's birthday, and our anniversary....) ;D ;D She'll understand ::) ::)
-
Great new Bill, looking forward to meeting face to face and other new folks and alwayds good to see my old friends. :) JW I will wear one that says Pappy and Pappy. ;) :) :)

Thats a good idea JW, I was going to make a tag that said my name "Steve Gardner" aka "Badger". I missed a lot of people at Mojam cause I didn't know who they were.
-
I despise name tags...hate em...but ill wear a shirt or sweater from the school district I live in...its blackhawk school district..lol  n I used to live on blackhawk road
-
I'm with ya Blackhawk on tags, but like Steve said if I don't wear my old worn out hat and overalls at most events ,Most don't know me,and I mean people that I have known for years. All the guys at TwinOaks wear a orange shirt on the main days of the events ,We have our names on them ,the word gets around if you need some help or have a question look for someone in an Orange shirt.Works pretty well :) :). Can't wait. :) :)

I don't know if it's good or bad but this bunch is eat up with personality. Ron
-
How about we just carry a bow we made...most of us know each other by the bow, style we like, etc...might be easier than name tags (and more effective >:D)
-
We usually try to get the whole PA gang together for a group pic at the Classic. I think we missed last year but it would be cool to see how much our group has grown over the years.
-
Ya I wished someone would take that and run with it Pat and make sure it happens, last year it was so pretty that everyone was spread out and actually shooting the range ;) ;D Maybe some one will volunteer to make sure that happens before the meal sometime Saturday afternoon. I hated we missed it last year. :) Ought to try not to this year. :)

Hey Pappy,
Offer a photo shoot with the 'Patience'. You will have them all there.

I used to live IN Blackhawk, SD! If'n I wasn't such a reformed criminal, I'd steal you a sign from the edge of town!
Lee: Good idea, carrying a bow you made. There are those here that I ain't so fond of, but I sure like your bows! But then I might revert to my criminal ways if'n some of you was to ever set down some of them bows you've made. >:D
That is....IF I was coming down...

How about beverage huggers with our names on them. It'll solve a mulitude of promblems: keep one's bevarage cold, maybe we (I) could keep up with said beverage and most of us would have it with us a majority of the time. :)
-
Two Thumbs Up on that hedge!! 8) I'm in. dpg

Contact calendergirl(Marie) and see what she can come up with...besides name tags! ;)

Steve PA also has some pretty cool shirts,I will talk to Marie and see if she can come up with something. She usually has some pretty good ideas on stuff like that. :) :)

Steve [Badger] emailed me and if all workes out he is coming in early[maybe Monday] so for the ones that show up early will get some time to pick his brain. Who knows I may start weighing bows when this is over. ;) ;D ;D ;D Lots of brains to pick at the event/shoot/gathering just to little time. :)
Pappy
-
Sweeeeet....looks like ill get to build alongside some cagey vets....those are always good times....yeeeeah ...
@Pappy...I know your a stubborn ole hoot....and why change a thing with what you do when it works for you....BUT...I started weighing and tillering per mass and am glad I did,and have seen a big difference in my bows...I went from average joe bow bows to making some screamers every now n then. Faster means a flatter trajectory....unless your ole eyes need a slow arrow so you can see what your hitting then don't change a thing....im just jabbing at ya man ;)...feel free to jab me back ;)

Well let's marinate that seasoned meat with some jack d and see what kinda good cooking we come up with  8)
-
Not my well seasoned meat. ;) >:D >:D You are right blackhawk slow arrows are cool. :) :) I will let you young whipper snappers turn out the fast stuff, slow and steady is fine with me. :) I will say I love to see the improvements that have been made in wood bows [at least what I have seen] since I started 20 something years ago. Its fun and very interesting to watch ,I am just to hard headed to change much. :) :)
Pappy
-
Sorry if my humor is over the top..n hope it doesn't offend ::)
Well if ya like slow arrows ill make ya a war club tip bow like a jim hamm mojam turtle bow ...u may think I'm joking ::)...but am I ???
-
Pappy's bows spit an arrow faster then most, I know because I've shot the majority of them and have one he gifted me. If his arrows aren't as fast as some, it is more due to a shorter draw length than the bows design. I know his arrows bring home meat every year and have for how many years straight??? ;)
-
Can a deer really tell the difference in an arrow going an average primitive speed of 150-160 and a screamer bow arrow going 170-190...... ::) ::) A shot in the kill zone is a dead deer...I just like my bows to shoot good!
-
If arrow speed was the one and only thing that mattered, I would seriously look into a Matthews from the local dealer. He's a great guy, an incredible hunter, and a man with ethics that are unassailable.
...and then I would go right back to scraping wood!
-
When I hunted at Pappy's arrow speed never came into the equation. The stand I was sitting on was about 12' off the ground and the first deer I had a chance at was 4 yards.
The second one was at less then 6 yards.
-
...and! ::)
-
AND ;) ;D ;D ;D Not over the top at all blackhawk once you get to know the guys I run with you will see not much of anything is over the top. ;) :) I tell new guys in the club all the time ,it takes thick skin to hang around here, most toughen up and fit right in. :) They say I am pretty over the top myself sometimes. :) I think we all understand that speed ant what we are after or we would do like JW said, but we all want to build the best performing/easy tuning and shooting bows we can and still keep it as natural as possible. I tell folks all the time, nothing especially primitive about my bows,I just like to build wood bows. I will say ,there will be some of the very best wood bow builders at this event that have ever gathered anywhere. Some you have heard of and some you haven't but still awesome at what they do.I get impressed every year. :) :) :)
Pappy
-
Pappy, I agree. I shoot the most plane jane bows you could possibly imagine. I don't even wrap the handles and seldom sand them beyond my scraper. But I do enjoy tweaking them out a bit for a little more snap. Avoiding excessive set and keeping the outer limbs reasonable in width will produce decent performing bows all day long. I have a short 26" draw so can use all I can get.
-
Hahahaha ....looky what I started 8) sometimes its fun to stir the pot :) ;)...and it sounds like ill fit right in nicely then ;)....can't wait for some good ole southern fun :D
And you guys got it allllll wrooooong....its all about speeeeeeeeeeeed...lol
Disclaimer: Ok...seriously yins know that im joking here

PS I never go over the top I'm plain jane and mild as well water.

Yep blackhawk you will fit in nicely and you are also right about the bow building fest, I try to explane to folks it is a bow building/napping gathering with a very good shooting tournament thrown in the mix. :) :) Hard to explane till you been there. :)Steve I know what you mean, my draw is also 26, on a good day. ;) :) :)

I'll stick with my regular M.O. and be the one with a beer in one hand and a beer in the other.
and a cooler close by. More fun that way. However I may even work on a bow if I can hook up with one of the guys that do the bend through the handles. I have a piece of osage down at Pappy's that has been there awile.
-
I'll help you Bear on the bendy handle. I've made several.
-
Cool I'll take you up on that. It has been acouple Classics seence I've do a self bow.
-
Can hardly keep up with the posts!

I'll be there with my helpers hat on too Bear. If I can help 35 Boy Scouts(and one brave young girl) build successful bows at the Classic I'm sure I can help you make one! ;D ;)

Are you sure about that? Ask GregB and Pappy I'm a hand full.

i can use all the help i can get.i am also tring to tackle a bend through the handle english longbow.i think Keenan is going to show me how to work on some yew if he gets the time.i might have too many irons in the fire.i guess the more i make the more i'll learn.can't wait to see you guys,Steve

I want in on this....I've never made a bendy handle bow.. ;)
-
i haven't made one either Jeff.maybe we can all get together and learn something.i am starting a hackberry english longbow with horn nocks, but i might put it on the back burner until i get a little coaching.see you soon,Steve
-
If I could make one successful arrow head the trip will be worth it. I have been wanting to learn napping for years and somehow it just never happens. I hear it is more addictive than bow making and needs to be approached with caution.
-
Badger, there will be all kinds of people to help with your knapping goals, and it truly is addictive ;D I've been to the classic 3yrs an have yet to shoot a complete course, gotta get my knapping fix. Last year I think I knapped 4 days from morning to nite , man my hands were tore up from all the rock beating I did. Later Bob
-
outback, last year at night i would sit in the knapping pit and watch all the goings on.i want to knap so bad i can taste it.i am tring to make bows right now,so that is on he back burner.there is so much talent in that pit,it is unbelieveble.i make alot of arrows but cannot knap.it is fun just watching those guys.lots of talent there.one day i will learn.it is a good place to learn.
-
Last year I got in the Pit one day and made preforms. I finally got back in on the last day and found out all the Boy Scouts decided to finish them for me :'(. There is so much going on it takes me a day just to gather up all my tools and what I have accumilated to go home. ;D
-
Eddie,i remember the guys talking about the scouts breaking their rock.o well maybe it sparked some interest in them.
-
Yea, it did in one anyway, he took my brand new Bopper I bought from M Brackin.
-
Seabass, don,t be shy jump right in the pit an get bloodied, Someone will surely be willing to help ya out with all the questions that come with knapping, Heck I have been knapping for 5 yrs an still got alot of questions for the guys at the pit. Eddie , I think Mark split with that kid 60/ 40. ;D :o
-
outback i can make some very nice small chips lol.i have a ton of flint but no skills to use it.i am going to get in the pit this year and give it another try.maybe the pros can show me a little something. Eddie,i am sorry to hear about the bopper.i have a couple if you need one buddy.let me know,Steve

Got word this morning that the Fates cannot be fooled with. I cannot distract them nor obfuscate well enough to keep 'em off my tracks. They were on to me all along. :(
Not gonna make it this year, either. Unless someone from this area may be going that way and I can pitch in for gas money.
-
What? That stinks :'(
-
I am the one that stinks as I had planned on JW riding with me to Clarksville. Well, white eyes have never been able to trust us Indians and sure enough I went and booked a hunt in Namibia at close to the same time as the Classic. Now JW is setting in South Dakota with plans to share his personality with the good folks at Twin Oaks and no ride. Just wish some one would swing by and pick him up! Am sure it would be a trip you would always remember. Maybe I could do like every group with a cause and apply for a grant. I will really miss all the fun at the Classic, even the rain! A/Ho Joe
-
I'm sorry you won't be there this year Joe. Me and my son enjoyed visiting with you last year.

Joe had to choose between being trapped for days with me in his pickup driving down to Tennessee or flying to Namibia with his daughter. Personally I think it's a no brainer and he made the right call. Heck, I'd rather go to Africa with his daughter, too!
Have fun Joe, take lotsa pictures!
-
JW,just get a plane ticket and fly there.one of us will come to the airport and pick you up.proably be cheaper than driving.just a thought.everyone wants to meet you and it will be a great time.
-
The airline tickets right now look like they'd run a bit under $500. That's a bigger bite than I can take right now. UNLESS I get this contract with the South Dakota GF&P for this summer. If that happens, I might just have to reconsider.....
Unless I can figger out someone to split the drive with. Anyone in the Northern Tier thinking of going????

Jw,good luck on that contract.i'll keep my fingers crossed for ya,Steve

As much as I have tried to make it work, it don't look like I will make it again this year. So many things to blame, but mostly the cost to drive there will be out of my reach I am afraid. I still have a few irons in the fire that many come through, but as of right not, things don't look promising. I think I will start a "Twin Oaks" savings account and contribute to it each month for next year so I can assure myself I can get there. Maybe some day.

Thank you so much Steve. There are so many people that I want to meet and shake their hands. I just have to wait and see if a couple of things materialize or not. Not giving up all hope yet, but it does look pretty slim right now.

It makes me sad to read about the Classic since I will miss this year! Had a chance to go to Namibia hunting with my daughter at a good price. Maybe this will be my last great hunt away from home (getting old) so am making the sacrifice. Will miss seeing all the truly talented people at the farm. Am letting Mr. Halverson down also as he was going to go with me to meet all you folks. Am planning to send some stuff for the raffle and wonder if you might make a suggestion as to what I should make? Sure was looking forward to meeting Mason, Shannon's son! A/Ho Joe

For now as allways I can only trust his wisdom as to what is best for me !!!

-
when is the classic?
-
Oh! Are they holding it again this year? I hadn't heard.
-
I just received my new copy of Primitive Archer magazine in the mail...and there is a great article by Stim Wilcox on last year's Classic....
I have wanted to shoot selfbows for several years now...either buying one or making one...and this looks like the place....my wife is interested as well..she has been shooting her longbow about a year...so she loves going to shoots with me....and the fact that we can make a stop in Nashville, which we have always wanted to visit....2013 looks like we might attend.....
It's 789 miles from Lancaster...and it means not making it to Baltimore's Trad Shoot two weeks later..but it is one I want to attend at least once....soo, vacation approval permitting...we will head south in 2013!
Lee
-
Welcome to PA, Lee. Good to see you here.
As far as I'm concerned the Tenn. Classic is the "go to" archery event of the year. It would take a disaster for me to miss it.
I met and got to spend some time with Stim Wilcox last year at the Classic. He is a very nice guy with an incredible knowledge for building selfbows. I was quite impressed with the sapling bow he built while talking to a crowd and all in about 20 minutes. It wasn't the prettiest bow you have ever seen but it shot well and thats what it is all about anyway.
Stim's book on building selfbows is a very good teaching aid for the wanna be and experienced bowyer alike.
-
Welcome to PA Lee...your on the wrong side of the state buddy ;)...have u been up to denton(ETAR..eastern traditional archery rendevous)? Theres always a healthy number of selfbow guys up there, including me n some buddies. Just approach some selfbow guys n ask questions, cus more than likely they made them themselves. Maybe start a thread of your own asking if anyones around your area to help you make your own bow. The fun in shooting a selfbow is shooting a bow you make yourself, not buying one. If i was closer id def help ya out.
-
blackhawk,
thanks...when i ran TradTech Archery, I had a vendor booth at ETAR every year...before that I used to attend, and this past year, due to being out of work, I could not make it.
This July, my wife and I have a campsite reserved at Potter County Family Campground, site #9 I believe, so we will be there. When it gets closer we can pick a time and place to meet up. I would enjoy meeting and visiting with you and others.
Stim gave me a copy of his book when at ETAR when I ran TradTech....and I watched his presentation at Baltimore Bowmen Traditional Classic:
Thanks everyone..Pat, I've been registered here for a while, but was content to just lurk....don't know much about primitive stuff..but that is next on my to do list.......

Hey Lee I have a friend up in Couer D' Alene, Idaho, Last name of Vivian. Not a real common name out here. .......Watch the primitive archery interest,It'll sneak up on ya' and next thing you know, you won't be looking at trees, sticks and turkeys the same.

I plan on coming down late Thursday night, probably get there about 4am-ish on Friday, just when Pappy's wakin up it appears by his posting times. ;D I've got a question about arrow points and the range. I usually shoot blunts and sometimes duplex, but what are we shooting @ the targets there? Regular field points? Just thought I'd ask, don't want to show up and not be able to shoot. Thanks guys, I'm gettin excited now!! dpgratz
-
Mostly field points or something like a duplex probably not blount or broadhead. Ron
-
Very interesting read about the Stim Wilcox hatchet bow. Would love to see a video of him making a hatchet bow! Talk about skill he has it! Does anybody know where he will be doing this next?
-
Why do I get the feeling his hatchet is sharp enough to skin a nitecrawler? Not like the usual one that is so dull you take two swings to cut a stick of butter.
I agree, it'd be fun to watch his demo!

Me and the wife have been looking over our financial situation/bills trying to find out where the money would come from to pay for our trip to the Classic. I figured that with the cost of gas and food it would be around $300. When I got the mail today there was a reimbursement check from our sons orthodontist. Seems insurance covered a little more than they had figured. Guess what amount the check was for........$290 ;D Now if I can just keep the wife from spending it for the next 3 weeks ::)

My son Isaac is all about this trip to TN. He wants to bring the bow we are working on and likes the idea of trading stuff. He has been bugging me all week about what he could trade and what others might want. I suggested that he dig some blood root that we have here in Iowa in hopes that someone might be interested. Blood root is a root that can make a powerful dye for feathers leather and cloth. The internet says it dyes stuff red if you add other stuff, salt I think, but I mostly get a real deep orange color to it. Around here blood root is hard to find so we only take every other plant and only look every other year. Anyway he found about 20 roots so far. Please let me know if anyone is interested in some kind of a trade for this primitive dye and I will let him know.

@iowabow....what is he looking for/wanting to trade for them? Just so folks know if they are interested in them.

I think he really likes the idea of the trade and would be interested in anything primitive. He is hunting for the root everyday so he should have enough for a couple of trades. If you want to pm items you have I will have him read them and pm you back tonight.
-
Matt & D.Tiller
That is special that you folks are taking up the Harmonica ,Yesterday we buried the best harmonica player I have ever known ! He was a childhood friend and known as "Harmonica John" Its good to hear that others are stepping up to fill his place!

That black locust will keep me busy for awhile, I tend to chew through a lot of osage. Will be good to have something to keep me under control, that just reminded me to pack my reading glasses to chase the rings on that thing.
-
Badger, don't think you have to finish or even make a bow for me. I don't want you to miss out on any of the festivies. The stave is given as gift. :) I still haven't cut the other locust that I was hoping to. Maybe I'll get to it, Saturday. I got a lot to do before the Classic.
Pat, this year I'd like to see some of your bows in person.

I plan on bringing a few alone, Hedge. Everyone should bring bows so we can all look them over. I've gotten lots of great ideas from other folks bows over the years. ;)

Welcome Pat. Really looking forward to seeing you ole friend.
Sitting around the fire now really looking forward to friends showing up soon.
Pappy is making us all laugh.
-
Likewise Jon. I can hardly wait until Thursday. ;)
Bordeaux, I'm sure there will be someone at the Classic that can help you with bone points. If not we'll find out by experimentation. ;)
-
I'll help you when I get there Thursday. We'll probably get run off when it stinks the place up, though. :)
-
Eddie, you'd never get to talk to anyone if you ran off every time you stink up a place. :o ;)

I don't wanta hear no Yankee jokes once I get down there!
-
People from California don't even qualify as a yankee. It's part of Mexico, isn't it? :)
-
Looks like I'll be down late Tuesday night!! :) My lovely wife doesn't want me to wait so late to drive down. Gotta love her for that. We have the chicken rollups and peppers already done, so, when I get home Tuesday from work and get the yard mowed (weather permitting) I'll load the coolers and be South bound. Can hardly wait. See everyone in a couple days.

I'm starting to gather things together for Thursday. Still haven't got my truck back, but I've got my fingers crossed. Chris Cade has generously offered to haul my butt up there if I can just get to SC, so I'll be there one way or another.
-
Looks like Roger (bonepile) is riding up with me and Kathie.
-
I just changed the oil in the truck. I'm going to clean it up a little and then start filling the bed with osage staves. Two more nights of work and then I'll be headed south. I can't wait :P

Not sure what I'm going to be able to do today. My wife has to have her thyroid biopsied sometime this week. Waiting to hear when that will be, hopefully they'll get it scheduled sometime today. For those of you that pray, we'd appreciate any she can get.

I'm heading down tomorrow evening. I was looking @ the map and reading the directions from Nashville. I modifies this post. I looked @ a map site and it looks best to skim Nashville and get on 24W. I hope to be leaving work early tomorrow, 6ish. If all goes well I should be there about 1:00am Friday morning. ;D dpg

Heading out bright and early. Should be there around noon or so. Got an extra visitor- bringing my boy for our first camping trip together. 8) Safe travels all.
-
Sounds like there is gonna be a traffic jam at Twin Oaks about noon tomorrow. ;D i can't wait! 8)
-
If I leave here tomorrow around 2 or 3 I might make it by 10 and set up a tent for Thursday night. What is the process do I need to pay someone or take care of it in the morning?
-
Someone will be up when you get there. ;) You can settle up in the morning when the office is open. If you sign up to shoot you camp free.
-
I should be there around noon tomorrow also. I've been trying to get to sleep for an hour but just can't. I'd leave right now but it would stir up a hornets nest with the wife >:D
Pat, I've got some goodies for you ;)
-
Have a pyrometer sand and untreated Burlington. I was wondering if any would interested in doing a heat treating experiment at twinoaks with me. What we could learn would be how heat is transfered to the stone and at what rate and what temps are possible based on how the fire is maintained? Also how to maintain a temp once the target temp was reached.
-
I got all my work done lastnight. I'm leaving @ 5 o'clock this eve, should be there around 11p or so. I'll be the one with the dripping ice cold PBR looking for the fire with the late nighters and a big smile on my face. ;D YEE HAW!! dpgratz
-
Also how to maintain a temp once the target temp was reached.
John, I think the big question is how to maintain the temp when the beer is breached!! :P
-
Fair warning ! I'm on my way. I should get there Friday morning. I'm excited to get the chance to meet as many of you as I can, but equally dreading the chance for all of you to see how poor of a shot I am. I'm hoping to prevail upon somebody's generosity for the use of there grill as I can only carry so much gear in my big truck and a grill is out of the question. I look forward to a very enjoyable time. If you see a red Peterbilt, its probably me . Please stop by and visit. Josh
