Title: Cheap begginer arrow material?
Post by: Bitterguy on January 03, 2012, 08:06:54 pm
My dad is convinced that it would be easier and cheaper for me to buy arrows at the store. This being said i was wondering if i could harvest the non broken limb of my red oak lb and if i could just find a cheap straight grain pine 2x4 and make some arrows out of that?

A nice straight grained poplar board will be a better choice than pine. Or straight grain poplar dowels........Art

I have made shafting from the split ceder fencing. cut some 1/2" blanks then hand planed round.

Everyone would like to have access to things that are cheap, easy to get, and high quality.  Unfortunately, we usually get only two out of three.  For example, if it's cheap and easy to get, it will not be high quality.  You can also make arrows yourself that are cheap and high quality ...but the right skills and materials are not easy to get.

Take a walk through a thicket. You'll find the multiflora rose, or rather it will find you! (Hint: take heavy leather gloves, along with your pruners)

You wont learn a thing shooting unmatched, unspined arrows. Have your dad spend $30 on used woodies from the classifides. The raw materials mentioned are great but they take skill and knowledge to make into quality shafts. You wont walk out with snippers and come back with a dozen shafts to use the next day.

Jon

I second the living crap out of this statement. For like a dollar each they just can't be beat. The thing is to go there, look threw every 3/8" one they have (they usually have like 50 or so), and sort them into the straightest/straight ones. Since they're like 48" long, a little bend will not be as bad when cut to 30", or at least will be minor and easy to correct by hand even without heat. Then, sort those into the strongest spines. Then (this isn't usually too big of a problem for me personally but I'd thought I would include this), take out the ones that are have really bad grain run off. Then go to the next 2 closest lowes stores and repeat. I usually end up with 3 dozen or so really nice very over spined shafts, ready to be spined down to whatever spine you need, for like 30 dollars or something.

go to walmart and get a pack of the bamboo garden stakes.  Look at it for thicker ones and check for little beetle holes... not those.  if you fish through the bin you can get a couple 12 packs with great shafting for $2.88

Landscape place out of OH sells Tonkin(3/8) by the hundreds that are 1st cut and relatively decent. Still spining some I bought three years ago for $40 (500). Good shafts of various sp. Weight. Mullet has a place near him that sells large quantities as well.

Cane is as cheap as you can get being free......but if you get some good clear straight grained poplar shafts from any hardware store, those work very well also.  But hey as far as no store I would go with cane.
