Marty had it nice and warm for me ,I don't do much of anything thru  the winter (to much pain)so that was an exception since you folks kinda got me fired up!
Maybe you can help me finish it at Marshall !
I would not want to mess it up cause I might get your name in the drawing!! Then you could have one good bow for your self !!

I am thinking about it,I usually go to PA but had thought about going to NC for a change ,now NC has changed their date to the same as the Classic so can't do that. :( I go right by there every year going to Elm Hall ,only about 8 hours. :) Isn't it the exit off 69 just before you get to the exit for 99 that will take you to SpringPort ?

Yes you're pretty close, Pappy.  Actually it is about an hour and 20 minutes north of Fort Wayne.  Exit 32 (off I-69).  19833 D Drive South, Marshall, MI  49068, if you care to Mapquest it.

I can't wait, I'll be there. I plan on giving bow building a try. My wife and I attended last year for the day, we had a great time but only got around to shooting the small course due to the rain. I brought a couple of wood bows that Mr. Dick Carrigan made for us. I will probably arrive Friday evening and stay until Sunday. I guess I could get a blank tillered and ready to go by Sunday. I also have an Osage stave that I received from a friend at an archery club who stopped making bows. I has been seasoning since 1997. The bark is starting to fall off. I plan on bringing it along to get some advise and maybe start shaping it with a little help. It has been a plan of mine to start on it someday.

I told my wife last night that we will both work on a couple of Blanks this year. I am not sure if I should get her started though. I had a friend come over to show us arrow building and she ended up pushing me out of the way, and she now handles the arrow building  ;D. I just bought her a new Spinrite cresting machine. The few hours that we spent last year at the Marshall shoot was great. It is hard to explain the feeling I had seeing all of the people working and shooting self-bows. Can't wait.

My intentions are to be there Thursday evening after work.  Will leave on Monday.

JTurner:  I probably won't get much practice in but, I'll have a bunch of arrows to shoot!  Strength in numbers will be my strategy this year!

Drums:  Got my kids bow off to a good start, last night.  Mmmmm, how sweet it will be!

Hey that reminds me
There is a boy scout troup planing to come they think about 11 boys between 9 and 11 yrs old
What do you guys think can we find enough bows to loan them for the shoot ?
I need to give them an answer so they dont come planing on something that won't happen!
I really don't want to but I know sometimes we break the no glass rule for children and think we may have to for this many loaner bows ,what are your thoughts ?
How many will you folks be able to have there ?
Guy

I dont have any glass bows Guy. I may have a very simple lightweight self bow or two to get them by. They are more than welcome to them.
Title: Re: 19 th Marshall Primitive Archery Rendezvous Michigan
Post by: MWirwicki on March 15, 2012, 10:25:33 am
I can help out with some light poundage bows.  If we have to, we'll make some boy scout bows right there!  I think that there's an archery badge we could help them earn.  One of the requirements is making a bowstring.  No better place to learn how to do that!

Bring 'em.
Title: Re: 19 th Marshall Primitive Archery Rendezvous Michigan
Post by: Buckeye Guy on March 20, 2012, 11:30:36 am
OK it sounds like we will have enough stick bows for the boy scouts to shoot so I will let them know that!!
Just hope everyone remembers to bring them and some arrows for the kids to lose!
This will probably mean that next year we will have a lot of boys showing up to make bows ,so we may as well start cutting wood for them !!!
I can hardly wait for the time to pass till I can go!!!!
See ya all there!!!!

hey, I'm a Marshall local and I've just started making bows so this sounds like a lot of fun.  But the only problem is that I'm only 16 and I don't have any friends that will go with me.  So I was wondering if there is anyone who wouldn't mind me tagging along with them?

Tom Im guessing you wont find a stave or a blank any cheaper than you will that weekend in Marshall. I know me and all the guys will have plenty floating around to look at and use. If your going to be there all weekend you may as well just build them there with all of us around to chip in.

Tom
I am glad its going to work out for you to be there for the weekend !!
If your wanting to build selfbows there is no shortage of what can be learned at Marshall !!
There will be blanks or stave's or whatever you need except maybe sleep a couple of the youngsters are are so fired up when they get together they may build for 60 hrs nonstop !!! Us old folks will sit back and enjoy the show, maybe do a little poken and proden along the way !!
Osage or Yew can be a little more money than the white woods but there is allot of trading going on so I am sure you will be a happy camper in short order !
Can't wait to get there !!!
59 days till Marshall Whoohhooooo !!!!!

I've never been to anything like this but have been trying to make bows for a couple of years now.  I'm going to take advantage of the bow building.

I've also made some atlatls and darts and will bring them and some bamboo that I grow for darts.  Also bringing some rabbit sticks and classical slings (think David and Goliath).  Did i mention that I was into archaic weapons?

I have also acquired several Yumi bows that were used in the Last Samurai.  I'll bring them along too, just in case anyone would like to do some Kyudo.

The club has some good food !
I kinda like to cook on the fire so I will have some also !
I camp less than fifty feet from the bow building pavilion!
Steve and Jenn share, Terry and Dan cook, and if I remember right Matt likes to cook also !
I think you will survive !!!
Are we there yet !!

Hmmm
Maybe we should coordinate meals to maximize bow building time!

Guy remembers well.  I do like to cook!  Over the fire is my specialty!

Yes, it would be helpful if you had extra vices to bring.  I have a setup (an idea that I hope works out) that I'm bringing with two vices on it.  I will also bring my tillering tree/scale and some tools.  Be certain to label your rasps, scrapers, etc with your names as they can get mixed amongst each other.  Likely, they will.

I'm hoping also to add a novelty shoot to the event.  I spoke with Mike Damon, and he likes the idea.  If you can save and bring empty gallon milk jugs, all you can bring will be needed for the novelty event.

So how many people usually show up for this event?
Title: Re: 19 th Marshall Primitive Archery Rendezvous Michigan
Post by: Buckeye Guy on May 09, 2012, 01:49:08 pm
We don't really know ! no one keeps track and that is one of the things we are trying to figure out how to do !
The event has struggled mostly because the wilder creek conservation club has struggled they are now on solid ground! we have not seen big numbers (1000+) for a few years but have increased  each year for the last four  years so I expect to see a couple of hundred folks come through this year ! these are just my guess no real figures are available .
The one thing I do know is We have fun !
We build bows !
We flint knapp !
We eat !
We enjoy life !
Did I say We have fun !
Sometimes we even stop to shoot our bows !!
Come on out and join in !!!

I have a pile of 4  x 6 x 6 that need to be used. Looks like I need to build me a vice stand! Matt my two teen boys go through about 50-60 gallons of milk a day. I should have a few for you by then.

Drums:  What worked for me a while back was to make a flat bench (a top with two legs braced).  Then I attached a bench vise near one end for holding the stave.  I sat on the end opposite the vise and peeled away.

Basically a short table then? Say 12" wide by 48" long and about chair height off the ground.... Am I close?

Why is the cost of living so high there ?
My daughter is looking for a place in west Virginia so she can get out of Penn. !

Man I am really bummed that you may not be there !
We gotta invent a telaport that actually works !!

I have to spend $1500 on our van so my wife can go to Penn. while I am at Marshall !
I hope every thing works out for you Chris !

Hey guys! I plan on attending this event as it sounds like a blast! I'm new to primitive archery as a whole and would like to learn from some of you more advanced bow builders. I've got a handfull of well seasoned osage staves, a drawknife and some scrapers. Is there anything else I will need to partake in the fun?

Thanks,
Dan

Spoke with Mike Damon this evening about fees.  I had a call earlier from someone who was wondering.  He said that the camping cost for the entire weekend will be $15.00.  (If you require electrical hookups which are limited, there is an additional fee).  The Course Shooting fee will be $7.00 per person for one day's shooting.  $15.00 for unlimited shooting the entire weekend (per person).

The fees were reduced from $20 last year.

Drove down for the day.  Nice to see and visit with folks like Matt , Pearl Drums, Gary Davis and a couple of guys from Hesperia. I watched the Canadians shoot thier 1/2" in diameter arrows with forged bodkin heads at a  steel target time after time and never breaking an arrow.  There was a little of everything there, self bow making, string making and flintknapping.

Shoot me now Charlie. I never even took my camera out of my truck. It was a great weekend. Got to shoot a bunch. Spent 30 minutes finishing a spliced red mulberry bow and of course pitched in my with  my tools and half brain to help a few others get some bows started and or re-started. Received a suprise from Blackhawk (pics comign soon). Buckeye Guy the worthless nut gave me one of his kick butt homemade chairs that I fell in love with at first sight in Janurary. Matt gave me back a set of super old checked , cracked, nasty osage billets in the shape of a 62" blank ready to be a bow. I was just amazed at the gifts given and received by all. Just blows me away each time. I brought several staves to give away and somehow ended up bringing more back??????? I love this hobby and all the good guys associated with it. Lots of talented people around us guys. Cody's (Misslemasters) buckthorn bows really are that nice, and his little brother is RIGHT behind him! Blackhawks bows really do have that skinny of tips and poop lightnin'! Marty (Oldtimberbow) has a heart bigger than my truck. Its your privelage if you ever get a chance to meet him and chat. Love him to pieces.

Matthew tillering his 2nd ever selfbow with the watchful eye of his big brother, Cody "Misslemaster" Wright.  Pearl Drums ironing out the details.  Matthew's finished Buckthorn (Nice job, Matt!).  Gary's big bow with Al, Cody and myself.  The bow finished out full draw 120lbs at 36 inches.  I had to make a purchase from the big auction site for a 200 lb. scale.
