Title: How short is Short ?
Post by: Coo-wah-chobee on August 06, 2007, 01:24:15 am
Backup bow fer this seasons hawg huntin'. From a piece of florida yew(Taxus floridana). Got it at a yard sale coupla years ago fer $1. Someone tried ta make a bow outta it. Had a VICIOUS hinge in both limbs (mid). Outer wood was WAY too thin. Whomever tried ta stain it . Looks like it was fieblings dye (dark brown) but was put on VERY thick and not in thin coats and allowed ta dry between coats. Piked it   and reworked it. Dont really like the tiller er handle bows but will serve as a backup bow just fine. Rawhide backed it. Shorty, 55" 62# @ 26''.Shoots a arra with authority and only has 3/4" string follow after shootin', back ta none in a few hours er so. Kinna looks like a Korean bowta me.... ;D Enjoy !..........bob

Looks like it ought to kill a pig to me.  The tiller isn't the question, the big question is, can you shoot a bow with a big old handle.  ;D  Justin

Bob, Looks like if you flipped it the tiller would be better...but if it works for you like it is, go for it. ;D    Pat

Sweet steep tiller and nice heavy draw weight there Bob. That had ta take a bunch o' talent, I've tried to rescue several yard sale bows .They always have major problems ,like being dried out , or warped from leaning fer years ,or massive set from being strung for years, well you get the point.  Good work. :)

If I had that bow I'm sure I would have wimped out and sinewed it.

Why not shorten up the handle a bit and get some more working limb?

Her a few more pics after I tried ta clean it up a bit and some profile shots. I really dont like handle bows and iIguess I didnt want ta spend a lot of time on it since it was a garage sale save and a spare huntin' bow. So I figured good enuf when I got ta this point. Shot 100 arras outta it today and it seems fine and still shoots with authority. Will definitely kill a hawg ifn ya do yer part. ::)..bob

Nice bow Bob,I'd work the area in front of the right handle in the picture.Take some more wood off on both sides of the handle. And just a little off about 5" back from the tip on the same limb. But then again if you remove the wood at the handle it might bring the tip in.

Tough wood to hold up to that abuse. The unbraced profile says a lot.     Pat

Well when I read the headlines on it , I thought well my wife could answer that question better than me cause I had her beleive inches was shorter than they really are on a ruler.    But no Really It took all afternoon to get my composure back good enough too say anything about it. Kinda like the fishermans lie.    36 in. is as far as I would take one down too.  Trapper

Thx guys.  Yup, yer correct more can be done. Its a back up bow so I dont wanna really go any further, Shoots fine and will perform fine ifn called on. IMHO florida yew is stronger than pacific yew. Ive made quite a few bows from the wood and they ALL were good shooters and strong as heck. Wood is gettin' tough ta get since it only grows in north florida on the Appalachicola river banks and a few other places which will remain nameless ! ;) ha-still looks like a korean bow ta me ;D...bob

It is a really nice bow Bob.I was wondering how it got out of that national Forest and it only grows in one small area there.I was wondering if a road trip was in order so I could see it growing in the wild. ::)
