Title: kickin a dead horse
Post by: ken75 on February 01, 2012, 02:44:17 pm
i know it seems that way , but i try to exhaust all efforts learning a new wood type. so once again one of the two crepe myrtle bows i finished today. 58 inch nock to nock 42 lbs at 28, stained with osage alcohol stain.  bow came in light because of a cluster of knots in one limb . the belly side delammed on two dark lines on the belly  seperating from the bow about an inch long and 1/8th thick. i glued this by using a syrenge while half drawing the bow to open the gap .tried to get some different back grounds along the creek on my place

Sweet ken...but geez man, ya don't have to stand in the middle of the creek for some new background pics...lol ;)...and if your sick of the crepe myrtle, then cut some of that rhododendron I see in the background and give that a whirl ...I thinks me sees some

Great tiller! After all these years of making and breaking bows a well tillered bend in the handle bow to me is the perfect tiller. Nice. Very nice. :) Jawge

John, Where Ken lives, rhodys don't grow. Too far south!  ;)  That must be bay magnolia.

Ken, have you tried the other CM, L. foreii(I think thats how it is spelled)  It has white flowers and a more reddish bark that seems to exfoliate more then the indica.

Thank goodness you went back to your usual stump for photos of the second bow.  I can't handle that much radical change, makes me uneasy.   >:D

As usual, Ken, those are some mighty fine arrow flingers.  Pure and simple, nice lines!

Man Ken the beauty is in the simplicity! I can't quit shooting my twin to that one! I have even been known to string it and draw it a few times in my bedroom before bed. My wife just looks at me like I'm way off my rocker.
Caedmon doesn't even know that ones for him yet. I know he'll be so excited.
Mark

p.s. for you guys that have never tried it this crepe myrtle is some cool stuff. So light for the poundage. and smooth drawing, maybe it's just Ken's handy work though.

thanks Gentlemen for the kind words , i really enjoy this stuff although ive been hearing the hickory call me lately.

Pat , have only tried the dark pink flowered kind , im searching for the white flowering plant , it is supposed to be from japan as opposed to china and india on the others.

blackhawk , magnolia is what your seeing , we have a few left here i havent tried like honeysuckle tree , and some mountain laurel , and lots of blue beech ( hornbeam) along the creek , and privet ,and sparkleberry ,need to get busy huh

Mark , hope this one is a lil easier for him ,and he enjoys it

Very nice primitive look to that bow.

I agree on building more than a few bows out of the same wood to really get a feel for it. Now if I could just find an abundance of Osage to give the feel that I looking for would be really nice.  >:D

Hickory has had the same affect on me lately as well.

Nice Ken.  When I'm tillering a short bow I always look up one of your bow threads so I can see how it's supposed to look. :)

Yes Sir!

They are Both Fine Looking Bows!!!
I really enjoy seeing your Crepe Myrtle bows a lot!

Made a Good CM Haul today, cleaning up two Large trees for my wife's company...
Did the work for free...  >:D

Have you done any bow building with staves split from good size (8 to 10 inch diameter) Crepe Myrtle trunk section?

Thank You,

-gus

thanks guys , nice to hear your comments . there are a lot of very fine bowyers on here and the finish work that yall do is amazing , thats something ive never been good at .

lol thanks George , i always look to gmc , he has some of the best full draws on simple stave bows , and from what ive seen of your bows you dont need visual guides. you've turned out some nice shorties as well.

gus biggest ive used so far is 2 inch, ive got two 6 or 7 inch staves to split out , so far the smaller diameter has been great. and i think my prefered width on these is 1 1/8th to 1 1/4 inches. my kids bows are runnin around 3/4 inch wide, and they are thin !

Yup...better get busy man.. ;) out of that list id give the american hornbeam a whirl if you can find a halfway useable piece. I liked it. I've done a rhodo but not a mountain laurel yet,and im always on the look out for one,but there eluding me. Dang twisted gnarly crap.

And I still haven't found me a crepe myrtle yet ::)

Thanks, Ken. When you said screw points, I thought you meant the point was coming out. Now I see what you mean. That is a cool way to round off the cartridge for blunts. Thanks for the close ups.
