He caught this fat boy in a winter grain field today. Thought you guys might wanna see. Ron
-
Caught? Not shot? How would you catch one of them nasty nippers without getting caught yourself???
I can almost taste him from here, yum!
-
Catch him with dogs and tie him up load him on the four wheeler. He has lots of experience he has been doing it since he was 14. Ron
-
I saw the dogs, but didn't see any vests on them so I didn't think they were in on it.
That's one nice looking and healthy piggie.
-
Those are the strike dogs the catch dogs wear vests and cut collars, they look like battle bots with lags. Ron
-
I almost wish we had them up here. But knowing how hard they are to control once they are established give me pause.
-
Excellent Ron! Any pics of the catch dogs in their gear? Would love to go do that some day...
-
That's a cute one, Ronnie ;D. The young boy that works for me caught 7 last week and turned them loose after he cut them. He came in this morning and showed me pictures of his dog he spent most of the night sewing up because he jumped out before he could get the vest on. He did catch it though, 287#. Tell you boy I said that's a nice one and well done. ;)

mmmm bacon.
-
JW they are a real problem for farmer even livestock farmers they are agressive and will attack valuable dairy cows and the like, on the other hand they are a hoot to hunt and almost anyone who has them on their land will let you hunt them out of desperation. As far as myself I go after them with bow or gun I aint about to try to catch one, my son like the adrenaline rush. Ron
-
I'll see if I can get him to send me a pic with the cut gear on, he's hard to get hold of.Ron
-
id prefer to go pigsticking myself but getting them with dogs would prob be pretty fun.
-
It is fun! But I'm with Ronnie, did it when I was young but one screw up and I'm out of work for awhile.
I met a guy that had been out of work for 8 months because a sow had spun and caught him on the left wrist and didn't quit biting till she got to the shoulder and he stuck her with a knife. He had multiple fractures and almost lost his arm from infection.
I like hunting with bay dogs and shooting them or stalk hunting and shooting them with bow or gun. Oh, and Jeep or truck :D.
-
Nice pig, but I don't see why you would catch them and kill them later when it is so much safer to kill them now.
-
Nice hog! Tell your son congrats. Folks do that down here too.

I had a friend in Savannah that caught hogs to supliment his income. If you were having a BBQ you place your order with him 2 weeks ahead of time. He'd catch the hog, pen it and feed it soured corn until BBQ time then he'd kill it and cook it for his cliant. The soured corn was to rid the hog of parasites and eliminate any gamey flavor. There are plenty of hogs along the Savannah River and surroundingf swamps.
The largest one I ever heard of from around there and saw a shoulder mount was over 600#. It was on the wall in a firecracker stand on Hwy. 17 north of Savannah in SC.
-
very cool.i also want to see the dogs all suited up.we don't have the hogs here.
-
Justin you usually want to take em live if your not eating right away. pig spoils FAST.
and Pat wow thats huge. largest id heard of was in the 500 range and thats still biggern hell. especially when i start thinking and compare it to my 160. but i figure if its 300#+ its probably gonna be kinda tough to chew on.
-
Man, thats a nice catch!! Wish we had a hog problem around here.
-
Congrats to him,nice pig. :) :)

Justin he sells to the folks who do hunts in a fenced enclosure and for BBQ. Also the size of the hog and the color darker the beter black brings the most money. Ron
-
Oh to be young again !
That boar would eat me for lunch as slow as I am now a days!
Thanks for sharing the joys of youth with us !

You got it guy they are entertaining to watch until the dogs get a grip the boys stand around with a hand on a tree limb if the hog runs their way they pop up in a tree they look like the little pop up dols they used to give kids for party favors. Ron
-
there are a few wild pigs in Michigan now. how many states have a pig problem, and do pigs affect the deer heard.
-
I don't know how many states but hogs will catch kill and eat a fawn.
-

Live food does not spoil,,,,,,,,,,, ;)

I wondered if he was selling them to hunting ranches, that is the only reason to keep one alive.
I know live meat doesn't spoil, but we shoot deer all the time, you just have to take care of them to prevent spoilage.
-
Justin, it sounds like they castrate them before they release them.
Down South lots of folks catch hogs to eat or sell.
-
In GA it is my understanding that the only way they can be legally released is in a fenced area otherwise they must be killed. I could be off on this point as I have not researched the law. Ron
-
In TX, once a pig is in your possession they're either to be killed immediately or taken alive to a facility to where they will be killed. There is a provision for boar to be sold to fenced in hunting areas, but not sows. Castrating boar (to create a barr) used to be common practice down here but current laws forbid it. Some people make decent money trapping and selling wild hogs down here, but the prices have been poor lately. It shuts down completely in the summer as it's too hot.

It's pretty common for people to catch, cut, and release boar hogs down here.
-
They are moving into southern central nebraska. I contacted the game and parks about hunting them and they are not allowing it. They feel that hunting pressure would just scatter and spread them.
-
Crazy southern rednecks.....maybe it was wise to not have a wrestling match with ya Ron....I mean conan the barbarian ;)

If someone did that to me id rather have them just cut my throat instead. >:D

I'm with you on that.

I have all ways been a supporter of castration with out representation !!
It ranks right up there with capital punishment for deterring criminals

Bevan;
Wait till they get established in Nebraska, they wil be begging you to come get them. :'( ;D When that happens they won't have to disc the fields for corn and wheat.

In Arizona you have to have a license to hunt jackrabbits, but for hogs it is shoot on sight. No license required.
-
The dog is Buck Wheat he is over 10 years old and is now a retired man of leisure he has it made better than Hughe Hefner. Ron
-
Cool Post Cracker. Good lookin' dog too. We are starting to get them in central Indiana I hear. I think it's shoot on site. I need to find me a farmer w/ a hog problem. Any of you Hoosiers know anyone near Monroe County? dpgratz
-
Here is one my son got a while back he wasn't able to catch this one live he had to be killed.
-
South Dakota has legislated fines and imprisonment to anyone releasing wild hogs.
Bevan, I guess you gotta modify the shoot/shovel/shut up to shoot/barbecue/shovel it in your mouth/shut up. >:D
-
Nice Daggers on that Brute!
-
The real bummer is that they are 'infesting' a state park. Prime area for a limited hunt. And still the game & parks says no. leave them alone. Probably end up paying for a professional hunter to come in and snipe them.

Just curious - what would be the point of releasing them? Aren't they just as destructive regardless of whether or not they have their family jewels?
-
Cam, I have a young man that works for me that will go out and catch 4 or 5 a night for the fun of it. Most people don't want to eat a boar hog so, they castrate it. If it's caught again then they can sell it because the meat will taste good because they haven't been fighting and breeding.
He brought me a 125# sow yesterday but we had a Vegan secretary at work that started crying and begging me to let it go so he sold it to someone else so she would quit whining about me putting it in the freezer ::). The other person shot it and put it in the freezer and we told her we let it go, to bad she's fat and ugly and I'm married ;D ;)
-
I'm vegan too. But second hand vegan, I only eat animals that are vegan.
