Title: Steam Bend Hickory?
Post by: wingbone on February 09, 2012, 04:45:09 pm
Is it a good idea to steam bend green hickory staves to add reflex?   I read about it in Dean Torges book on the Osage Bow.

Yes!  Hickory probably reacts better to steam or boiling than dry heat. I would seal the back with shellac just in case.  ;)

With most woods its always good to soak it for a day or two probably less bc its green. then steam 30 min. Per 1/2 inch.

Don't forget to post pics.

I have found that hickory reacts to steam very well.   Using dry heat on hickory i always somehow manage to scortch it.   Was thinking of making a hemp backed hickory.
