OSAGE
-
They were cut in the woods next to some standing red elm witch I will put pics of also...the leaves looked like slippery elm and it has no spikes/pokers
-
SYCAMORE!
-
Oh, you're asking seriously? Sorry, dude. OSAGE!
-
Osage.
-
Sycamore has white wood!
Are there any spines on the branches?
-
yeller mongolian tulipwood........ive never seen a bow made from it.....send it to me for further inspection and for its first trial run. i dont think its any good and wouldnt want you to be wasting your time with it ;)
-
Pat no spines +no definitive early/late wood difference like any osage I have seen
Blackhawk be careful what you wish for
-
hmmm ::).....i wish i had me one of those staves ;)
i think its a male maclura pomifera
some times the males arent as thorny and furrow barked as a female, and do not produce fruit.....the inside of the wood tells it all...unless you photoshopped it and are being a tricksy hobbit ...was there anymore around like it?...like in a row fashion?
-
SYCAMORE!
Now that's funny, I don't care who ya are!
Dude your as stubborn as my wife! I never heard of a bowyer so resistant to the idea that you have access to prime Osage. Don't worry Soy, I won't tell everybody that you've been cutting it up for firewood! Oops! :embarassed:
-
Not Elm.
-
osage
-
Where are those other pics? ::)
-
I must have looked at 1000 plus osage trees of all ages this fall and notta one had bark anything like that. I aint saying either way without smelling and touching.
-
Smelling would definately tell you. ;)
-
I think you'd better send me a stav...I mean I quarter split so I can get a better look. ;)
-
Looks pretty orange :)
-
Id dose look orange but it is green it pales out as it dry's .the trees go 35-40'highand pipe straight smells like the barn...kinda like elm...when u cut it ...no photo shoppe here just me and my phone and im at work tell tomorrow and then I will get more pics up ...also going to verify with some tree experts locally so we all know, win lose or draw.
And doc im not as stubborn as ur wife that just hurts >:(
-
If it is osage and you got that in MN keep it a secret I have yet to see any here in MN.
-
Dv in mn where about u at here in mn
-
Alright Soy, you got me there. Nobody's that stubborn ! Except ,maybe myself of course. ;) ;D ;D. All that aside, as far north as you are, the short growing season would most likely cause very tight growth rings. You would probably have to sand the end to see 'em clearly. Blackhawk is right about the male trees having less thorns if any. Where I live, the Osage trees have a lot of variance in bark patterns. In a mile long hedge row , there can be as many as a half dozen different bark patterns. This to, I will show you when you get here in April. Josh

You might be the only bowyer in the world that's dissapointed your elm log turned out to be osage :D
-
Looks like the elusive Orange Elm to me. I'll try it if you don't want it, might even pay shipping. :-\ ;D
-
Looks like osage to me. If youve got osage trees 35-40 feet high and pipe straight you better try to keep it a secret. Lots of these guys will be tryin to convince their wife why they should go to minnesota for vacation this summer.
-
Maby it is the rare osage /elm hybrid ...no disappointment here if it is osage, doc will end up with the first minesoda raised osage bow I've ever herd of i...if it is for shure ...but I am not convinced as of yet that it is osage...hope im wrong ??? Kinda
-
Looks like Elm to me
-
Hold your ground Buckeye its you and me and we are outnumbered >:D ;D >:D
-
reddy orange elmsage. Telling ya >:D
-
Here are some pics from the same tree run through the grizzly 4 weeks ago the darker of the two I put linseed oil on to pop the grain(bottom pic.)
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What happened to the orange color ??? You and your photoshop trickery >:D
-
Tricksy lil hobitsess
-
Did ya switch logs Pilgrim :-\
-
If that's bodark, it's the straightest I've ever seen. That's not really saying much though.
-
Okay, those last two are Not Osage. €*¥%$# *¥$#%€¥ €¥%$¥¥!!!!!! :-[ Looks like you better come to Kansas after all! You tricky devil, you! >:( ;D ;D 8) Josh
-
Told ya so
If you can't make excellent bows out of that stuff I don't know what to tell ya !!
Do I win !?
I'll send you my address so you can mail me my prize!

Guy
-
Yep, you win! As Soy's only collaborator , you should be entitled to half the winnings. Would you like the upper limb or the lower? >:D   Josh
-
I guess the lower
so at least I'd have something to build on instead of being left hanging !
Guy
-
Alrighty then! Send me your address , but I give you fair warning, it'll be awhile before I get around to this one. Josh
-
I'm changing my vote to locust! :)
-
Left my glasses at work last night... :o
Could it be some type of Mulberry?
Does Mulberry grow that far north?
-gus
-
Ok some pics.of the wet stuff...stopped @ a local wood cutters shoppe to verify red elm and he was in agreement. I could stop @the sawmill or contact a forester but I think that will not be needed .....
-
Well Guy, looks like were not gonna get a rise out of him. I thought he'd put up a squawk about sending half his bow to you. >:D congratulations Soy ! You da man! Josh
-
oh well
I was up for half a take down
a bow for half the work is one I may actually finish
Guy

Who said anything about a takedown? I was gonna make him a selfbow and saw it in half! >:D
Now that I think about it, that does sound like an interesting project. I'm game if you are. Send me your address and I'll see what I can come up with. You don't suppose we would accidentally start a half-a-bow swap do you? :o Think of that organizational nightmare! Josh

Now that is just plain silly there will be no half a bow...but maby a half done bow... just being on the winning side should be prize enough...that being said we are all winners ...a good debate and an education sounds like a good deal to me ;) thad
-
I would be up for half a bow challenge but I am not sure I will live long enough to complete it after all you know what happened the last time that took place here if not ask Pappy and those that have been looking to complete the bows that where to be shipped from one person to the other to do different parts of the process ! >:D
-
I still wonder from time to time if that was or ever will be concluded. I wasn't proposing any sort of challenge really. I was just thinking it would be interesting to see how a relay takedown build would turn out. Josh
