Title: 70# 30" elm longbow
Post by: druid on February 17, 2012, 06:45:08 pm
This winter I had terrible score and one of the reasons is snow. Barely one bow in last month. With -13 F and snow to my belt this is one very good winter, just I like. Bad thing is that I am disturbed a little in my work. First pic shows my workshop, covered with snow. Other pics are lastest bow, elm longbow. Started with 4" reflex, has some character, and heat treated in Marc's manner in that shape. 2" held reflex just after unbracing, 3" reflex after some time. It is 74" ntn, 30 x 22 mm, 70# 30". Most of the cross section is with oval belly, I thought it is safe because belly was good treated. Walnut stained, pig fat finished.
Sub zero cold didn't affect tillering and shooting this bow.

Been a while, a very nice showing ...if the snow gets much deeper you may need to draw straight up to keep the bottom from digging in ....

Thank you drums..it is hard to be warm when our rivers are frozen to the bottom, long time ago we hadn't so cold winter.  :o Last few days are warmer but week before was deadly for few dosen people in my area.
Dazv, I am still newbie, I am making bows about 4 years, maybe few months more, I think, but I was very unskillfull in the begining, a lot of broken bows before first one survived. :-[

Beautiful bow druid as always.

Do you usually do a rounded or flat belly on your longbows?

Another very nice bow.  How is your bandsaw project coming?  Did you find a motor for it?

Great tiller on that one! Now I get it. Just move to a climate where I get snowed in, and will have plenty of time for bow building. LOL!!

Thank you friends very much! I am glad you like this bow and our cabin. Cabin was made for bowmaking purpose, almost all details fits to bowmaking. Under the roof is some wood drying, also under this one, small roof. In open part I do most of my works, some of them inside. Behind my backs, on pics, is test field where we test our bows and further is forest.
I usually do not do oval bellyis but this one is exception, I wanted to see how it will keep reflex.
I think I found motor for bandsaw, waiting for man to bring it, about 2 hp. We will see would it work, I hope so.

Great work as always... you look a bit shorter than usual ::).
That's real snow, we got a few inches which lasted a week in the UK.
Just had another look... that tiller is gorgeous, so elegant.
