Title: My Wagon Wheel Display
Post by: DBernier on August 12, 2007, 10:30:45 am
Some of you know I have been working on a display to "show off" some of the beautiful stone work I have bought, traded and best of all, you have given me. I had an old carridge wheel in storage for over 20 years and just could not give it a purpose. Well here it is. The table its self is the wheel, consisting of a 2 1/2 inch steel axel with a steel base 10 in dia. x 2 1/2 thick base welded on. A thick plate glass specially cut to fit this was done by a friend who I will be eternally gratefull. Thanks Fred. Between each spoke is a # on the outside rim and I am creating a "legend" in a sterling silver picture frame with pages that describes each item in that area and who made it. The base is a 5 gallon water bbl with the top and base cut out. In the second photo you can see the frame it slides into and securely holds it. I have been long in making this and I wish to thank "ALL" of you who have contributed to this effort. My wife loves it because she gets back our other living room. It will be center stage in that room and will be the first thing you see when you enter it. Once again thanks to all.

Dick

Thank you PatB and Justin.   ;)  I got it all mounted sense the first post and it looks fine. I am going to put some of the artifacts in and see how they fit. The depth is only 1.5 inches at the hub and 1 inch at the rim. I have cut some leather pads for the glass to sit on which should give me another 1/8 inch clearance at the rim. It is so much fun doing something like this. I sent a photo to my Son in Fl and already he wants it. "The body is not even cold yet"  ;D . Anyone who gives me something, or trades me will be immortalized in the legend. I will post more photos as I get to finishing it.

Its only 17 inch's from the hub to the inner rim Jamie. But, what an awesome idea.  ;)  I may save a space for myself too if that happens. Can always section the arrow as it will never be used again. Great idea. Hey, even a 16 inch arrow is cool too.   ::)  I like this.   ;D

Your right about the memories tradrick. Some of this "stuff" has a lot of meaning to me.   :)  Even as I look at the items before me for placement, I get a warm feeling looking at them and remembering who gave them to me, why or how I used them and where I found them.

Eddy, it is already placed. The good side up? These points etc I received from you "people" do not have a bad side. They are all so beautiful.  I had a friend visit today and he was in awe of the "stuff" between the spokes. He stayed about 4 hours shaking his head and fondling almost every piece, weather it was on the table or in the display. He made me promice to take him looking for arrowheads etc. I am already looking for another wheel.

Glad you are feeling better Jamie. Lay down, take a nap.  ;D  Got a couple more points yesterday, Thanks Vinson.  8)  As you can see the "Wheel" is filling nicely. I am using paper descriptions with the names till I formalize the legend. Got CRS you know.  ???   Got a neat idea for that legend too.

What a neat idea. If you had enough you could sell them, or give them away as gifts. They would look great in almost any house. What a great conversation piece. Love the idea of the small bows for display along with smaller arras with points, wouldnt that be an awsome display? LOVE IT ALL!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting this.

Makete, if you mean the wheels, they are hard to come by and rather expensive. The people who have them sell them as antiques. It is the reason I never got rid of the wheel, even though it was a pain bringing it with each move. I have located another one and it will probably take another 20 years redoing it   ;D .  I do like the idea of 1/4 scale bows and arrows thou. Imagine 1/4 scale Flemish bow string from brown and gold silk thread. Wow. ::) . Anybody else got any ideas for "How to display your Artifacts"? I have put a flood light in the ceiling to shine on this display.

Dick,
I love the idea of a mini-warbow.  I'll add it to my to-do list for the winter.  Cool.

Hey JD, I'll make a couple of war arrows. Start off with 3/16 sq. iron rod and machine them out. For display you only need a 1/8 dia short hole for the shaft and file them down from there. Oh man this is neat. I have an Osage plank in the shed. I will lay out a 16 inch self bow tomorrow. Like I don't have enough on the plate.   ::)  Well I understand thinking rejuvenates brain cells.   ???

Received not one but two beautiful points from Knapper42 (Jack Hemphill) out of Texas. Thank you so much. There are a few of the guys from Texas sending "stuff". I will rearrange some points and have a Texas display. This is really cool. Thanks   8)
JD, I will send you one of the arrows when I am done. I got the iron from a friend today and Marie sent some Peacock feathers I can use.   ;D

Hey Dick - love your collection. That's a good idea, something I should prolly do one day - you know when I get the time  :). You got a package coming, if I'da known about your display I would have thrown in a few points. How are you doing by the way?
Title: Re: My Wagon Wheel Display
Post by: DBernier on August 20, 2007, 08:10:45 am
Hey Cowboy, good to hear from you. Yes the display is comming along fine. I love going into the front livingroom and seeing it.  ;D  You should have a better chance of finding a wheel down there than here if you want one. You have a wide range to search with all your travels. Thanks in advance for the package. Hey on the points, send them when you send back the jig. No rush. I think I will do a "how to" on footed shafts using the jig if someone doesn't do one first. Hey maybe I could learn something. I am feeling great right now. Each day is better than the last. Loosing a lot of weight. Later.

Speaking of Cowboy, my mail carrier just left and I received a package.   ???  It is a gorgeous skinning stone knife.  :o   It will fit in well with the Texas stuff and I thank you for it. Beautiful.   8)  It is like Christmas around here lately.  ;D

No Dick - thank you for all the fletched shafts, jig, and footing practice peices ;D. I have yet to find time to try the footing's but will. Feel like I need to get one good bow built for huntin season - though I have one already that will do the job :). That knife - don't worry, I could have done a lot better job if my wife and best friend hadn't been in the shop complaining about marriage matters while I was working on it - another story. Anywho, when I get some footing's done I'll send ya the jig back and a  handful of points for the use ;D.

Dick, your gonna need to fix up that other wheel quick if all these people send in stuff. You wont have enough room for it all in the one you got :D. You could have one with just small bows and arras.lmrao. Or make a bow rack for the itty bitty ones. Now wouldnt that be cool to see; different styles all in a small rack? ;)

Makete, your right. Based on the people who said they would send stuff I have room for the points etc. I am sketching some miniature abo bow racks but will reserve one spot for a miniature bow and arrow. These ideas are all so good you wish you could do them all.

I know this may be becoming a bore guys but a friend, thanks Dave, sent me some small knife blades, medium arrowheads, and some preforms for me to work on.  I have two slots open for the miniature bows and arrows and some other "stuff" comming. Appreciate it.

Hi guys/gals. Jamie sent me a point made of Obsidian. I believe it is the point he used to get his first deer with a stone point. It is going in a special space of points used to harvest critters. I have found mine and will label it along with Jamie's and hopefully I can put another one in there after this fall/winter. Vinson gave me one he used in Texas and another in NC. This is really neat. Thanks Jamie and Vinson.

I absoultly love yer display Dick, I see them wagon wheels all over up here rotting in fields. Gonna
have to see if I can get one. Of course I have no room in the house for it and nothing to display but what the heck
if I can find one might as well grab it eh?

DanaM, I had that wheel for over 20 years. I told my wife some day I would find the right use for it. I put the glass top on it today to see if it all fits. It really looks good in that room. Thanks to everyone.

Well, I got 4 more points in the mail today. Three of them from Steve Saffold and one large point from Andy Cipriani. I guess that about fills the wheel except for the space for the miniature war bow and arrows (in the works). Again I want to thank all of you who contributed to make this display an outstanding one. I will post one more photo of all the points in place less the bow display.
