This is a work friend of mine. He and I have been chit chatting about getting him started for a long time and finally got a chance to get together today. He has a ton of wood working and hand tool experience so today was a breeze for him..........me to! Here are a few pics of what we got done. He is taking it home to add tip overlays and rough out the grip. Its 4 year old hackberry and clean as a whistle. 66" long flatbow, 2" fades and 1/2" tips. The bow has a 1 1/2" of natural reflex which we centered perfectly. The top limb has some nice wiggles and the tips line right up. No heat needed.

Anybody ever see hackberry with sapwood that thick? I havent. Also look close at the back in the band saw pic and there are brown lines running through it. Im confident they are just fine. Its just a very unique stave for hackberry.

Looking good. How is the new Grizzly working out for you?

Your shop is way too clean, Chris! You can't build bows in a shop that clean...can you?

Finer than frog hair Clint. I built wayyyy to may bows without it. It literally eliminates hours of time and pain for elbows.

Way to pass it on, PD! Jawge

Grizzly is the only place to buy new Grizzly. Mine is the 3/4 hp model. I dont miss that 1/4" hp one ioda. Jim who has ran miles of wood through bandsaws couldnt believe how well the 4 tpi Timberwolf whipped through that stave. Horepower has never been at a shortage.

I told my wife I was very excited to help him get started because I know for a fact he will teach at least 2-3 other people in the coming year. That makes it even sweeter!

Thats awsome Pearl always love to see another "sucked in" ! Reminds me of when I built my first under the watchful eye of my mentor :) Its a great sport building your own bows and archery tackle the more people we get involved the better, and the more people we will have to share our common interest in what we all love but they should always be warned of the addictions they are dabbling in ;D.

that's way cool PD, Bub

I dont often get jealous of staves or the subsequent blanks that come from them. I drooled in envy ALL afternoon over this stave/blank. I wanted to take it back and toss him another piece of anything else. I still have a narrow split left from this 1/4 log.

Good looking start on that one, Got to love getting folks started.Nice job. :) :)

Quote... "Anybody ever see hackberry with sapwood that thick"
It took a few seconds for me to figureout that is was hackberry. Those limbs will be almost all sapwood?
Very cool Chris!!
You're allways stepping up to help a newbie. I know I'm one :)

Hence my stave jealousy coaster!

Cool stuff PD. that pic with him holding the bow on the ground looks like you glued on another piece of wood for a handle the sapwood is so thick.
-
Well done PD, reminds me of the borg from star trek: "you will be assimilated" >:D
Keep up the good work:)

Its thick enough that some will still be left near the fades and lowers, the handle is almost all heartwood. I have never seen such a gorgeous piece of hackberry. Its usually quite bland. He told me yesterday he has the grip shaped and is narrowing the tips today. He should be ready for final tiller this weekend!
