Title: Thank You Lee S.
Post by: Bevan R. on March 31, 2012, 07:39:22 pm
A long time ago, Lee S send me some glass to try to learn how to knapp. I promised I would post a/some points when I got them made out of it. This is the first one from that box Lee. Smoked Glass.

your a better man  than me Bevan. I just played with some glass the other day and after breaking three or four, moved back to my rocks :).

That's a killer ! My hats off to you for working glass. When I try I feel like I've been through the death of a thousand cuts torture & then it snaps on me. Again very nice point. Tower

Am I the only one that sees the glaring error in Bevan's last photo of that point.  If you didn't see it, stop reading and go back to look.

Now you see it, don't you?!?!?!  Either he used a stand-in hand model to hold up that point or else someone other than himself knapped that point.  NO CUTS ON THOSE FINGERS!!!  Everyone knows a real knapper is all scarred up and half bled out!

 >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D

Looks like we lost another wood shaver to the dark side.  The knappers have turned poor Bevan into one of their own.  *Sigh*

I guess I am still learning to knap.  I made several points and a knife saturday and never lost a drop.  I did get a blister though.  Nice point Bevan.  Keep it up!!!!!

Thursday, I was working with somd dacite that I got from Eddie a while back and cut my finger pretty bad.  It looked like a murder scene, I havent bled like that in quite a while.

Thanks guys.

JW - I ALWAYS wear a contractor glove on my left hand. I have several pokes and a dime sized blister on the other hand (holding the camera).
I had thought glass was tough until I tried to take some stuff off a piece of jasper I have. After that point was done, glass seems to easy.

You'll be back at the jasper soon enough.  I know you aren't afraid of taking on the difficult tasks.

That is what I had read/heard. I think this is already heated. I bought it sometime ago. It is just much more 'there' than glass or obsidian. :)

yeah it'll be a little tougher, but the more you knapp it the easyer it'll come, not easy, just easyer , Bub

That is what I am understanding. I did some obsidian 1st, then the jasper, then the glass. After the jasper, I could really tell the difference (and ease) of the plate glass.

are you working any slabs bevan, if so try and go 1/2 ways across all around top and bottom, then you have to change your angle abit to get come arc to the point, otherwhys it will just be flat and you'll break a bunch, Bub

Looks great Bevan, really glad you could make a point of the stuff I sent ya.  I look forward to seeing many more!

I love working the stuff with indirect percussion and copper as I tend to get too aggressive with my boppers and that "glass" just won't put up with my force  ::)

All I used was a pressure flaker Lee. No percussion at all.
