Title: Cross border shipping?
Post by: ojibwatbowyer on April 05, 2012, 11:47:16 am
Hey im not sure if this is the right place for this but I have a question, when sending rawhide from Canada to the U.S. or visa versa, do I have to claim anything? Is there additional fees, or laws prohibiting sending animals parts across the border? Or are these questions I should be asking the post office?

they usually need to know the contents of the package, then you declare the values also, paperwork is done before they mail it.

Anything in the mail that is passing the border has to go through customs first.  The contents and the value have to be declared on the customs form that you fill out at the post office before mailing.  Sometimes the items are not legal to ship, and they will be confiscated by the customs people.  Sometimes the customs office will ask you to pick up the mail from their office because there is an import duty (fee) on the item.  It all depends on the latest regulations.

For US Customs (importing into the US), here is a link:

For Canadian Customs (importing into Canada):

When shipping to Canada, I always put craft supplies on the form where it asks for a description.  I think I  estimate the value a little low also  ;)  in  case they have to pay any duty on it.

I'll tell you right now, if you go into detail of what you are shipping when it comes to animal or bird parts it will not get to who you are shipping to. Being a Mod on this site I'm not going to tell you how to do it but you need to be creative.

You can't ship leather or bird parts. I went through Customs in Edmonton and watched the person in front of me lose 300 pairs of goat skin glove.
