What's going on fellas? I'm all excited, I finally decided to get the YouTube thing going. I gotta say it's pretty fun. I'm youtube name is DudeitsthatguyFL. Anyhow, here is a bow that I made for a fella who wanted a Cheyenne bow. It follows dimensions I took from the Hamm/Allely Encyclopedia, so it's 47" ntn and made of Ironwood. Now, I can't say for sure that they used ironwood for bows, but it apparently does grow natively in Eastern Wyoming. Gotta thank Eddie for hooking me up with the stave. This was a small side split that I wasn't even planning on making a bow from, so I figured this would be a test. Turned out fine for a test. It's about 48#@24". Back dyed crimson. Wrapped the handle area and reinforced a spot that I didn't like, but it seems to be healthy. I'd go slightly wider next time, but like I said, it started as an experiment. Enjoy!

I really like these short native style bows, and I'm still yet to make one, tried once and it broke.,,.,,this one looks pretty cool ...good tiller too
-
Nice little bow, Steve and she looks like she shoots quite well.
-
Nice bow! Great bend on that baby! Define "ironwood" please. That name means lots of different wood in different areas. In the Pacific NW that would be Ocean Spray or Holidiscus Discolor
-
Well thankya, fellas. Randman, it's Hop Hornbeam - this is good bow wood.
She shoots well Pat, but I've got an even shorter one of Sea Grape that I'm finishing up that has lower draw weight and shoots even better. These short bows are fast becoming my new favorites to shoot. I'm finding a technique that works well for me and I'm starting to get consistency out past 20 yards.

Cool! I'm looking to make a shorty for kayak fishing. Think this design could push 50-60lbs?

Thanks guys for the nice comments.
Prairie Bowyer, 50-60 I would say is possible. IMO, the challenge is the same with longer bows but just much more challenging - keeping set down and minimizing bow stack. What I'm finding out from spending the time shooting these bows is that I'm OK with pulling as short as say...22" for shooting even though I pull 27-28". It is a different style and takes practice but it is becoming reliable with practice. A short sinew backed highly elastic bow is in my near future. Wood compression is important but I'm finding with heat treating, wood elasticity is important for the bow to have that "high quality" low stack feeling when drawing. I'm really revisiting some of the designs for the short plains/west coast designs. Enjoying a bow that is 43" ntn is making me wonder about trying for a sub 40" bow, sinew backed. Might be really fun.
Anyhow, so many things to try, what a great hobby!

That's a cute one, Steve. It would almost fit in your back pocket and it looks fast.

Very funny Stretch! ;D

I love this little bow, nice paint job too.

That bow shoots! It would be great for ambushing hogs or whitetails while tucked up in a Live Oak or Cedar tree in the Hill Country. Thanks for showing her off.
