Title: Sinew backed Hickory
Post by: osage outlaw on April 24, 2012, 11:03:10 pm
Here is a sinew backed hickory bow I finally finished.  I loosely based the shape of this bow off of the one on page 178 of TBB 1.  It probably isn't the best limb design for a sinewed hickory bow, but I just liked how it looked.  I flipped the tips and backed it last winter and put it away to dry.  I wish I would have reflexed it because it took some set.  I dyed the wood with dark brown RIT dye mixed with denatured alcohol.  The skin is a Bullsnake.  It is 60" ntn, 52 lbs at 26".  I can feel the handle start to bend just a little at full draw.  It has been over a year since I have made a hunting weight bow so it was nice to get back at it with this one and my trade bow.

Nice bow!  Did you have any problems flipping the tips?  I've been told hickory is difficult to bend and I've been afraid to try it, as I'm not too experienced yet.

I steamed the tips to bend them.  I left them thick and they lifted just a small amount of splinters.  I was able to thin them down and get below the splinters.

Nice bow, Clint. That is a classic design, one Jay Massey used...even with hickory.   Are you bringing it to Twin Oaks?

I'll be bringing it Pat.  You saw it last year.  I brought it to work on, but never got the chance.  I thought it would be sluggish, but its actually pretty snappy.  Of course that might change in the Twin Oaks monsoon season  ;D

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.  The finish is 6 coats of tru-oil.  I can never get hickory sanded as smooth as I can osage.  When you see it up close, don't laugh at the sanding marks on the sides of the limbs.

Blackhawk:  If you remember, I spent most of last year working on a big project ;D

Nice job Clint. I quit working with hickory because in our humidity they start out snappy and turn out sluggish. Hope this one turns out different for you.  Danny

I hope so Blackhawk.  I'm trying to get that bullet hole bow done before next week.  And I've got another sinewed bow curing out.  I need to get working on a hunting bow for this fall also.  I won't be cranking them out like some of you guys  ;) , but I hope to get a few more done this year.  See you next week.

Sidewinder:  I'm not a big fan of hickory because of the same reason.  I know its good bow wood, I just think its better suited for a different climate than we have.  I doubt I'll cut any more hickory trees.

Very nice bow Clint...  that one needs to make a trip to California. This dry weather would ring out every ounce that shooter could muster!!

Just a thought  >:D

I have another shorter hickory bow roughed out from last year to.  Maybe I'll give it another try.  I wish HHB grew around here like Hickory does.  That stuff doesn't mind the humidity as bad.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone  :)
