Title: Hand forged hatchet flea market find???
Post by: criveraville on April 28, 2012, 02:56:46 pm
There's a hand forged left handed (you can tell by the curve of the blade use) for sell at the flea market for $12. Should I go back and buy it?

That style hatchet wasn't necessarily left handed. Mine are made so the blade will come off and you can flip it over so it's right handed.

YEA I would but just becuase it's old. If the blades curved form use who ever forged it did'nt harden and temper it very well. I've never seen a temper blade bend if it's temper right to the steel exspecially a short hachet blade.

It's probably a old shakers hatchet. For making cedar or pine roofing shakes. A winter time living for the loggers when their was to much snow to log.
Why didn't you buy it? It's easier to gain forgiveness than permission.(My Dad)
Thanks Leroy

Well that's the harchet. It was $12, the  a few hrs later it was $20. Too much for me..

But I did get that little hammer.. The lady said it was a railroad hammer. I don't know, but for $2 it's my new rock hammer ;)

Just wanted to add that the photo shows a broad axe/hatchet.  Flat on one side for turning logs into boards.  It get sharpened with a single bevel.  I have one in my shop right now that I use for bows, and general kicking around the bush.  Not the best all around shape of head or type of sharpening style, but I use it anyway.

The hammer looks like a old tin basher's hammer. Just a guess
Thanks Leroy

I have one like that , from my Grandfather.  Single bevel.  You have a nice hammer, can be used like you said, for rock smacking,or  tin bashing, brick , and block shaping, and just all around handy little hammer.  Good for hitting fingers, and thumbs also. :P ::)
