i was wondering if anyone has a small seasoned osage stave they would like to trade for a piece of antler that could be used for flint knapping or a knife handle, if would be for a 9 year old who's father is going to be letting me have a good amount of black locust from his farm, so i wanted to give him something back, as his son is getting into archery
i have few different pieces i could trade and ill try to get some pics up later,

im not exactly sure... its for a 9yo and i want to make it with some growing room, im planning on a elb type so it doesn't need to be that wide, as far as length what do you think would be good

Hmmm...
I'm guessing you'd probably want it to pull out to 23-25"...
So you'd want at least a 60" stave by 1.5" to 2" in width and thickness?
Leme look in my wood rack this afternoon.
I should have some Osage to fit that requirement.

I have a couple of Candidate Staves I pulled out today.
Gonna reduce them down a bit tomorrow to make sure they would fit the bill.
And reduce potential shipping costs.
Once I get them sized close I'll send you some photos to see what you think.

what kinda antler is it?

white tail, all i wanted from the antlers was the tips, so there is a few possible good knife handles or knapping tools in then

Hi Fishfinder,
Sorry for the delay.
After going over my current batch of Osage I think I only have one piece seasoned that might fit your needs.
Its 66" long x 1.75" x 1.75.
It does however have some issues.
Its got about 3 to 4 inches of Lateral bend that would need to come out and a little bug damage on one end.
However if you're okay with the lateral bend, I'd be willing to work it down under the bug damage to a clean ring before we work a trade.
Unfortunately even though the rest has been drying split for nearly a year I think it's still a little wet yet.
I'm sorry, I thought it was closer to dry than it is.

looks like it would work to me, and the lateral bend shouldn't be to hard to work with, but how wet are the others, as since summer is coming i have some hot cars that could finish the drying while i work on it. so what did you want to do for a trade?

The other staves were cut 7-4-2011.
They are running around 11%.
But now that they are split out further they should drop faster.
I think they are definitely ready to start working down to rough outs.
The other shorter stave is a fairly pretty belly split.
If you want one or two of the others I'd trim them down to your length specifications and clean them up a bit for shipping.
Out of curiosity are you trading any Black Locust?

i might be interested in one or two of the others, and hopefully i will be able to trade some, it depends on how many staves i get( meaning if i get more than 2 or so) i have not personally look at the trees closely, but there is such a large selection i hope to be able to get allot of nice staves, from what i saw, there is a row around 100yds lined with bl around 4? inches across possibly more, and the a house lot next to it he said has some monsters. he knows what i am looking for, so i am hopeful. so im guessing you wanted black locust for the trade? and if so, we should probably wait a while to trade( just in case the black locust im getting turns out to be worthless, or i don't get it at all :-\)

Ah... Mi Savy.
Well how about we work a trade for the first stave so you don't get held up with your ELB project.
I'll go ahead and work this stave down under the bug damage this weekend to make sure she's good.
I'd be up for some White Tail Base and Tine pieces suitable for knife handles.
Then we can work out a trade for some Osage for Black Locust at a later date.
I'm easy man, really no worries. :)

Just an update.
Had some time this evening to work on the stave.
Had to go down about six rings to find clear wood.
About half way done getting her chased out.
So far, I think it will make for a good stave. :)
Probably won't be able to finish it till Friday, will post pics when done for your approval.

Finished chasing a ring on this Osage Stave.
Looks Real Good from here, so if you decide you can't use it, you won't hurt my feelings... :)
Okay here are the particulars on it now.
63 3/4" long
2" wide by 1 3/4" deep at the big end.
2" wide by 1" deep at the small end.
1 1/2" wide by 1 1/4" deep in the middle.
It has three knots, two in the light end and one in the heavy end.
The Ring that I wound up on is a nice ring 1/8" on the small end and and 3/16" on the big end.
It has one hint of a check in the middle of the big end limb that shouldn't cause any problems.

looks great to me, and sorry bout not having the pics of antler up yet, this has been a crazy week and is shaping up to get worse( exams....only 14 days of class left)
