Title: KITH and others in the works
Post by: jthompson1995 on May 08, 2012, 10:54:03 pm
I decided that since I need to get a knife made for the KITH that I'd get some others at least cut out while I'm at it. They are all edger blade knives as that's the easiest steel I can get (and they're cheap!)

I think the KITH will be the second from the top. I'm really liking how the top one feels in my hand so I may keep that one for myself.

The bottom two are going to be my new camp kitchen knives. Got some nice mesquite for their handles. I can't use the good kitchen knives for camping  ;).

nice looking blades. I went to my HD to get some edger blades and they no longer carry the kind I like to use to make knives. Something else I have to order now. >:(

I used a Dremel wih reinforced metal cutting wheels and my belt sander up to this point. I'll take off the bulk of the blade grind with the sander and refine with files.

It's just wrapping up now. Hopefully it won't be too long until the next one.

Since I got confirmation my knife got to its recipient today, I figure I can show the completed knife. This was the second blank from the top. Cochin rosewood bolsters and stabilized spalted crabapple scales.

What type edger blades do you look for?

I get the ones that come 2 to a pack at the BORG (Home Depot). I think they are echo brand.

Here's a build along David Knight did a while back that got me started. I just played around with the shapes you can make with the size of the blades and he big hole in the middle.

Thank you much Sir!
That is exactly what I was hoping for.
I have some things lying around and I have been thinking about making my own blades for some time now. I just did not want to get that technical with the forge and tempering etc...
Getting excited just thinking of the possibilities!
thanks again

Thanks for the great build a long.  The problem is the nearest Home Depot is three hours away one way!  A/Ho Joe
