I have two red maple staves im playing around with and was wondering if anybody has had good results? Never worked it before so I am going to keep it long and wide. I am aiming for 35lbs to maybe 40lbs and plan to hunt roughed grouse:P

Red maple is a soft maple. It's not as good as the hard maples, but it's still a maple. Leave it a bit overbuilt. I'm sure 35-40 pounds would be possible with this wood, just design it according to its density. I've never worked with it, but I can imagine a general 'safe' design will work. Leave it a bit long, wide, flat and well tillered.
