Title: persimmon bow
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on June 20, 2012, 07:07:39 pm

Put this bow together likely for me to use in the upcoming season. Im really pleased with it so i plan to keep shooting it. It is FL native persimmon. It was a sapling about 1 1/2" diameter. I left the full thickness through the handle so that should give you the estimate on how thin it is. It is 61" long and 60# @ 26". I left it very primitive. good finish work, but no fancy tip overlays and no shelf. It's shot off knuckle. The arrows I am working on for it are sparkleberry and cane shafts with FL chert stone points. Also i didn't add any stain to the bow at all, that is 100% natural color on this bow. Some of these persimmon saplings dry very dark in color. The grip is simple deer skin dyed with walnut hull dye. thanks for looking.- Ryan

I don't know what I like best about that bow , that has the look of pure primitive to me.   I think that is the image of the perfect sapling bow, exceptional work twisted.

Very nice bow Ryan. I love sapling bows. I think people should use more saplings as bow staves as they are so easy to turn into a nice bow.

Of all the bows of yours that I have seen, this is by far my favorite.  Simple, natural, and exquisitely tillered!  Well done! Josh

That's an awesome bow Ryan!  I really like how it has that primitive look to it.  A lot of primitive bows have a very refined look, almost like a fiberglass bow.  But your bow shows a perfect balance of human ingenuity without "erasing" the natural beauty of the wood, leaving just enough to show that it was once a living tree.   A perfect harmony of Mother NAture and human skill.  AWESOME!!

That bow just looks dirty, like something that was pulled out of some ancient cave :)  I love it!

Sweet!  I like that one bro!!  The string is even colored to match it just right.  Looks like something to shoot hogs with down in Florida.

thanks very much guys.  im pleased with it. Its amazing how the simplest of bows that have a rugged appearance can often be some of the coolest.  not sure if its the standard shape or the colors or what, but this bow just "works" for me

this is what a primitive bow is all about! Love it.  You have inspired me to make a sapling bow.  White wood bows are dear to my heart.  Your Bow has my vote.

Many bows that I have seen capture my attention due to their individuality. This bow has captured the essence of the traditionalist in me. For me at least, it sends my mind back to a time when this was the only means of feeding the village. Excellent job on the bow, and an excellent job on capturing my attention. One giant thumbs up on this one!!! 8)
