Title: Lil Bow
Post by: Pat B on September 19, 2007, 06:08:12 pm
This is my newest. She is 48"t/t osage self bow with rawhide backing, about 1" wide and pulls 54#@24"(I have pulled this bow to 26"). The arrow in the pics is 28" tip to tip for reference. I was gonna sinew back this bow because it has such thin rings(42 rpi) and the back ring(s) are violated. After I tillered her out and pulled her to 26"(on the tree ;D ) I figured I'd just back her with rawhide for safety sake and see how well she held up. So far so good. About 50 arrows through her and she shoots an almost 500gr arrow with authority, but has taken a bit of set. At 15 yards she will be deadly. I'll get a full draw pic a bit later.
The decorations are scraps of western diamond back  and a horse tail tassel on the top limb tip. The handle is wrapped with hemp cordage.  I think I impressed myself with this one! ;)    Pat

VERY nice! I like the tassel nice touch. I was thinking of using rawhide that I got off last years deer to back my next bow. So I may be asking you a few questions later.

Thanks guys. Like I said, this bow impressed me!   ;D   The tassel is similar to what the Plains Indians had on their bows for decoration. This isn't a copy of any style but what I did with a small piece of osage ;). I have developed a respect for tight, thin ringed osage. I believe it makes for a good bow wood. I am working on a 66" ELB style bow of the same wood and sent half of a 6" log to Skyler and Don Wilson for a project Skyler and friends are doing for St Judes Hospital auction. Skyler will be able to split his half into 2 staves.
Here is a full draw pic......                 Pat

Wow Pat!!!
That is one nice little bow.
How did you flip the tips Steam or Dry heat?
Does it stack with the up-turned tips?

I have been wanting to make one like that for some time.
The next bow that I build for myself will be one of those.

I am impressed as well.  Thanks for posting it Pat.

Thanks everyone. RidgeRunner, I used dry heat (with oil) for the tips. They splintered :o on the back but I removed the splinters with no ill effect. ;D
Justin, That shed is my house. >:( ;) Just outside the kitchen window. The light is always even there in the evenings and it the only clear wall I have for a background.
Skyler, Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the same wood. Be sure to split that 1/2 log into 2 staves. ;)
I appreciate the positive comments. I really don't like short bows but I'm stuck making them lately. I have a few more in line. ::)     Pat

I too love this bow. The skins and rawhide and the tuft are just so cool. Almost looks like you raided an Indian museum.

Thanks everyone.  ;)  One really doesn't need much osage to make a good bow. Before I added the decorations she weighed 12.2oz(mass weight) The wood in this bow is quite dense and dark in color. I'll have her big brother(66" ELB style) done in a week or so. Can't wait to compare the 2.     Pat

I know you've been after a short bow for a shile Pat.  Got a fine tiller on that and nice decorations.
I have no idea what working with rawhide is like  - how thick is it?  what is consistency?

That is one neat bow, Pat.  Congrats on the artistry. The rawhide actually dressed it up very nicely.  Nice full draw! Gulp :-\ !  Kind of scary pulling a short bow back? Got you bookmarked for Sept Self Bow of the Month, too.

Dave, Rawhide, when dry, is very paper like but once wet it becomes very pliable and forms to the contours of the bow. The rawhide for this bow came from Gary Davis. it is deer and is very thin...but strong.
Outdoors Girl, welcome! good to know there are some females out there with the same interest as us guys(Marie and Sarah, ya'll don't count ;)). Thanks for your comments. Please join in more.
Don, I flinch every time I come to full draw. You will notice in the pics that I'm not at full draw.
  Thanks Alan.      Pat

This looks similar to the bow that Jim Hamm (I think that's his name) made in TBB vol 1. I might be mistaken or completely off my rocker, and if that's the case please someone let me know. Regardless, whatever inspired you to make this bow...it's beautiful. I can't even fathom the work, skill, and time it took to put it all together. Great Work :) and thanks for sharing the pictures!

I've been trying to see how strong of a bow I can with as little of wood as possible. So far, this one is tops. ;D  These shorter bows are hard to shoot accurately, at least for me, but from the ground and no more than a 15yard shot, I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it. From an elevated stand(my front porch) I'm not as accurate.
Thanks for the positive comments guys.    Pat

As usual Pat you impress me. I like that bow. I have made some little kids bows out of osage but nothing with that much weight. Might have to try. i have some shorter pieces. thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks guys. Ya know, primitive is using what you have to work with. ;)  I had these scraps of snake skins and needed something to do with them. I have also thought of a patchwork snake skin backing using different types of skins. "Patches", you know! ;D   Pat
