Now recently I got a really nice with Yew. Long about 82 inches and 2x2 inches wide and thick.
I do not know the size to work with yew about 130-140 #

George,
Many Mary Rose bows are just a little under 1 1/2" wide at the centre (I think the very widest is 42mm) and 1 1/4" deep. I'm sure 40 x 35mm would achieve your aim. The wood looks nice and dense.
Good luck,
Jeremy

What a nice looking piece of wood. One day.....one day.
-
It is my opinion that your piece of yew is not dense enough to make 130-140#. It looks to me like your stave only has maybe 20 rpi. It's hard to tell without some sort of measuring reference. Could you take a picture with a ruler beside your stave?

I think I started in this database sizes.

I see about 30 rpi. I wouldn't try pushing this stave to 130 -140#. Just MHO. I have a couple of yew staves with 50 -60 rpi, that I think might make that sort of weight. However, yew is amazing wood. Very elastic. There's only one way to find out... give it a go!
-
If you can't make 140 with that stave there is something wrong, just don't make it too long and make sure it's seasoned enough.
-
Yes,140# is too large and difficult to pull, but 130# would be better. OK, now I'm waiting to take off a little moisture in the tree and started working.
Thanks for help

This lightly ... I started working on this warbow. These are still rough dimensions and square belly. Will continue working after a while. Expect a sequel.

oh, so thats what that was, while i was watching this befroe i was wondering, looks great so far
-
You seem to have left an awful lot of sapwood on that stave! I'd have taken away at least half of that before touching the belly of the bow. That way you would have got better performance out of it.
Cheers, Dave

Looking good.
Holding a CD up in front of the pic, it looks like maybe the right limb is working a tad hard in it's centre. Maybe a whisker stiff in it's inner 1/3 ?

That is looking very nice. You should easily get 100+# out of it. It's stiff in the handle, but it's far from full draw. Keep going!

The left limb is stiff to me, it is lower, there are about 1 " reflex near the middle, and it makes it a little hard there, but you are right, may be right limb looks is hard.

ya, in my opinion bow will go up to 100 + on 28-29 "and about 125-130 at 32"
Thanks!!

Graphically this is the situation - the bow have a very hard section in the handle.

The handle will start to move as you increase the draw length. Better having a stiff handle now, than too much bend there early.
-
25" draw

The tiller is looking very good. What weight are you at with 25"?

Thanks..OK, that sounds a encouraging! :)
~95. Increased by 5 # per inches for now.

wow, i am loving the look of this bow, but i think mabey there should be a little more bend mid limb? could be wrong though

Are you pulling it at full brace height now?
-
This is 30" draw - still hard in the upper limb maybe .. or eye in a lie .. also a little work in center.
~115-117# for 30"

Yes, I agree. Your top limb is stiffer, especially in the outer third.

!? I think the first third is hard -
-
Agreed. If that bow was mine, I'd get the top fade working a bit, and bring the tip of the top limb around a bit more.
-
Hi, dudes,
sо, that finished this bow - ~125 # @ 32 ".It's а very hard yet. I have a bow over 130 which pulled easier than this.

It certainly seems like you're struggling to get it to full draw!
-
Looking awesome! Congratulations. Very sweet bend. Man whenever I get on this war bow section and start reading the pounds you guys are pulling, I start feeling very old and weak ::)
-
:)This yew makes my shoulders applause ..force is not smooth, but too much for the last few inches.
-
I'm seeing a small hinge in the lower limb, about 8 or 10" from the tip. But I haven't seen an unbraced picture yet, so this hinge could very well be a small spot with deflex.
I would only work the inner third of both limbs at this point. The outer limbs are working pretty good, but it's the inner thirds that are stiff.
Also, get rid of that tiller stick. It's a huge set inducer, if not a murderer for such heavy bows. Use a tiller tree with pulley system, or the mirror.
-
how thick is the sapwood layer on that bow? I have a curing yew stave with a layer just over 3/8" which i think is a little too much, but the rings per inch are 40, and I don't know how to reduce the sapwood without violating a ring on wood like that.
-
I'm not detract from sap of this yew - a little less than 3/8

Nice bow.
-
Hey, George... nice bow indeed! Do you have a full draw picture?
-
Sorry for poor quality picture, but no date.

Again looks very nice, well done. All the way though you seemed on top of the project. Rare piece of yew indeed.

Поздравляю Жора с мощным боевым английским тиссовым луком! Молодец!
Cant pull anything heavier than 70- 75# at the moment
-
sweet bow! i hope i get something similr to this with my Yew but maybe aroung the 45-50#@26" i know thats not quite warbow weight but it's something i feel confident i could pull. why no handle wrap? thanks.
-
Warbows don't have handle wraps.
