Title: Made a little hunter
Post by: gstoneberg on September 09, 2012, 07:41:20 pm
I decided to go out and see if I could make some hunting ammo.  This is a heated spall I got from Patrick.  It had some cool red coretex and I tried like all get out to save it in the point.  There was so much curve in the spall I was sure I'd knock all the red off but was able to keep just a touch of it right in the end of the point.

There was a little unflaked spot on each side in the middle I could not get a flake into.  However, as I was sharpening the point I spotted a little platform that lined up with one of those spots.  So, I gave it a big whack and I'll be darned if the flake didn't clean up most of it on that side.  Wish I could have gotten it all.

At 130 gr this one should hunt nicely. :)

Very nicely done George! Got to like it when the plan comes together. That red point might be a sign ::)

Thanks guys.  I do have small hands, but it's a nice sized point.  I probably shouldn't have called it that.

Yes, but I have a problem.  The adult hogs at the lease are so big that I'm a little reluctant to shoot one with a stone point knowing I'm not going to shoot through it and will have to track it way back in the thick stuff.

I've been hoping for one in the hundred pound range.  These 3 sows are between 175 and 250 (or more).  That closest one is larger than the boar that's been following her.  We tried twice over the weekend to shoot one of the big sows with the rifle.  Didn't see a thing the first time and the second time the wind had switched and I gambled the hogs would come in from the east, but they circled south of the feeder to get downwind and caught our scent.  We heard them squeal, but they never came in.

Thanks. That spall was in a bucket of rock I got from you. I think it was rock that had fractured while being heated. This one had a crack so I lost some width and length. Turned out better than I dreamed it would.

As for the piggies, this is my new lease over here, 43 miles away. I counted 14 piglets. By November they'll be perfect for the rotisserie.

Very nice point I looks like a killer. Do you still have your
Lease at CP. I drove by there the other day
And there was about 8 pigs running
Around our there

Thanks.  Yes, I still have that lease, but haven't been hog hunting there this summer as I have closer places.  I was there about a month ago and while there were hog tracks up by the gate, there was nothing down by the feeders nor any pictures on the trail cams.  I hope there are some pigs coming in now.  One of the other guys on the lease is heading over in the next few days.  Some of the feeders may be empty by now.  We had something in there that knocked over some feeders and totally destroyed one of them.  I'll tell him to be sure to hog hunt if the hogs are running around.

Thanks,
George

Last year a big spotted sow got hit on the road right there at the entrance while I was out there hunting.  Didn't see a thing.  Should've sat up by the road. ::)

Thanks Eddie, I had to punch notch the base to get it thin enough to haft.

And, here it is on the front of my #1 cane arrow for this season.
