Title: raccoon
Post by: barefootbowhunter on September 24, 2012, 01:37:29 pm
I just learned how to resize pics, so i thought i would show you guys a coon i killed. First shot was in the head from 10 yards, 2nd was in his chest from about 5 feet. Salmonberry arrows, duck feather, and some magnus insert broadhead. 52# @28 glass bow, whats funny is i only drew the bow to 24 inches or so instead of 29 inches, mainly because most of my shooting is with short bows. So really it was killed with 40 @ 24.

for the skull i buried it in a bucket full of compost for a couple months, then soaked it in bleach. JW actually it just disabled him, hence the second shot. after i hit him in the head all hell broke lose, he was makin all kinds of rowdy growls and screams, rolling all over the place. second arrow took all of 10 seconds to stop the battle. headshots are not a good idea, i wouldnt do it again

wow, im surprised that the headshot didn't take him down, i guess its where it hits in the head that would effect it....could use exploding tiped arrows ::)  ;)

Nice job of skinning that skull.  What a trophy mount.  I know it would be hanging on the wall in my man-room.

I hope that's sarcasim. The only shot worse than ahead shot with an arrow is a gut shot.

I beg to differ; The last two hogs I shot in the forehead turned belly up and didn't even kick. One broadhead was buried down in the chest cavity.

i hunt barefoot untill its to cold, under 50 degrees. being that 90 percent of my hunting is spot and stalk, bare foot allows me to walk in silence without looking down at my feet, keeping my eyes focused on where my prey may be

From the angle of that shot the broadhead looks like it would have severed the brainstem just above the medula.  I would have thought that headshot would have tallied his ticket!

And no, I generally would never suggest a headshot.

Good job killing that thing and the skull looks great.  I like the arrow in it.  You might want to use peroxide to whiten skulls in the future.  Bleach will  get them white but it is harmfull to the bone.

Beauy supply stores sell the stronger peroxide.  40 volume is a good strength.  Keep it at least room temperature when you soak it.  Peroxide doesn't work very well when it's cold.

I enjoy seeing your hunting pictures.  Makes my little patch of woods behind the house seem kind of pathetic.

sorry but you got lucky. Been instructing bow hunting  courses and working with our Natural Resources up here for over 10 years, every year DNR has to go put  animals down that someone has shot in the head with an arrow. Not to say an arrow in the head will not kill but most of the time they dont. Arrows have very little shock when they hit. They kill buy causing massive bleeding. Unless put in just the right spot there is very little bleeding from a brain injury. A bullets shock turns a brain to mush. Does not make for good media when photos of animals show up in local papers with an arrow in it's head.
