Title: Some New Sticks
Post by: mullet on October 02, 2012, 06:09:05 pm
I took a break from bows to make my Mother-in-law a walking stick to help her get up and down. The short one is gonna be my spider web stick when I'm in the woods. It's a copy of a Sheperd's Axe that I'm now calling a Bowyers axe ;D.

They look great.

You must have some awefull big spiders down there if you have to use that thing to clear the webs out of the way.

Those look amazing!  What kind of wood is that?  Where did you find the axe head?  You sure do nice work.

Adam, the wood is oak that has been strangled by honeysuckle vines. I always try to cut some when I go to Chris Cades farm hunting. The hatchet head is just and old roofing hatchet that I did some creative gringing and sanding. It was $2 at the flea market.

Clint, google golden orb spider, aka banan spider. It sucks when your face goes in that web while walking in the dark.

I love that spider stick/bowyers ax...and I knew exactly what you were referring to.  ;) We have webs here in the fall that will almost take you off your feet. A good walking stick really helps.

Thanks! They are fun to work on for a change of pace.

Sterling, you ought to be sitting in a tree stand before daylight and feel one of those big Banan Spiders walk across the back of your neck. :o

Kung fu master!  HA!  That's funny stuff, right there!

I've been known to break into epileptic break dancing when getting a spiderweb in the face.  And I LOVE spiders.

Eddie, I like the mods you made on the shingling hatchet.  You have me thinking, and that could be dangerous, ya know?

For some reason they reminded me of some "diamond willow" hatchets I've seen.

Shawn, Google Sheperd's axe, you'll see a lot of examples of them.

You guys are hillarious. I know exactly what you're talkin about. I creep through the woods in the dark at a snails pace trying as hard as I can not to make a peep and then one of those webs hits me in the face and all hell breaks loose for about 10 seconds.

Cool, I found "some length" of a piece of birch (bark tree) that had a vine wrapped around it. It looks all "circularly knotty" like that one pic. I'll post it at some time. It spiraled up the length.
