Heres a 52" hophornbeam...R/D molly bends thru the handle...50's@26"....final mass weigh in 13.8 ounces....it has a character lump in the upper limb that only covers the center of the limb and i had to hollow it out to tiller that area....gotta love the toughness and elasticity of hhb holding up to that strain in a high stressed shorty with that cross section. Anyways,im gonna do this backwards and get straight to business

Thats a nice one for sure.
-
That's a little sweetie for sure.
-
damn blackhawk, make those levers any thinner and you'll be able to see thru'em, nice one , bub
-
Love it. Looks like it ought to be fast with a sweet send off.
-
I wonder though...
Did you have osage on the brain?
-
thanks sharpend....dude i always got osage on the brain 8)
thanks jon... ;)
thanks bubby....next time ill try to make them invisable :D
thanks slimbob...thats a good definition of it
-
Well I got Vine maple on the brain...
it just doesnt have the same ring does it.
Back on topic...
How about some dimensions?
-
Its a 40/60 lever to working limb ratio...1 7/16" wide handle that flares out to 2 1/4" at the fades, and tapers to 1 7/8" to the fades of the levers,3/4"wide 9" from tips,1/2" wide 6" from nocks, and. 300" at the string grooves, lever thickness starts at 9/16" and tapers to a hair over 7/16" right before the overlays....side notes...patchy cambium left on, and ipe overlays...that enough detail for ya ;)
-
You're crazy man :) For some reason it just doesn't surprise me any more when you post bows like these >:D Way to push the limits to the extreme!
-
That has "fast" written all over it. I really dig how the side profile gives no indication that the working limb is more than 2 inches wide.

I was wondering what a bendy handle molle might look like. You're the expert, but it sure looks like it could bend a little more at the lever fades. Maybe it's an optical illusion. But she really looks fine!!
-
Dang Hawkman !!! That's just plain slick!!!!
-
Great bow Chris, got everything going for it design wise and nicely executed too. I don't think that I would want to shoot it though,
if I did then I probably wouldn't care for shooting any of my bows anymore ;D ;D.
Greg
-
good job, that thing looks wicked fast.
-
Awe snap, hold up, i gotta wipe the drool off the keyboard!
-
BEAUTIFUL!
-
That thing is awesome. You really push the limits on the thin tips. Great job on it Chris
-
Wow! I love seeing something out of the ordinary and this certainly is one of those bows. Great job with that hard to tiller hollowed out limb. Tiller looks great and outstanding clean beauty. Congratulations
-
Very nice!
-
Cool bow, nice experiment. 8) What about that design? would you build more of these or does it has serious downsides? How does it shoot?
-
Very cool, bet that thing will spit and arrow.Love the finish work also.Sweet. :)

Thanks to cameroo,Gabe,Kenny(tillers good for r/d profile),Kip,Greg(lol),Steve, arrowind, Keenan, tbod, and pappy for all the great responses..I always appreciate it :)
Clint I just remove all that doesn't belong, and no need having dead weight going for a free ride slowing me down ;)...thanks man.
@joducus...this is the 4th one I have made in this particular design,so that should answer your questions ;)...thanks
-
Nice bends pal.....just so you know that yellow dye didnt fool me! Still aint the King of bow woods!
-
That is bonkers cool 8) Amazing work. Must try something like that one day.
-
Thanks pal..I know ;)
Thanks dwardo...give her a go man..lemme know if ya ever need help with one ;)
-
Now that's what I'm talking about.Looks GOOOOD.I had a furrow on the back of an ironwood and humped it up on the belly to compensate.Looked good.Thought it was too stiff during floor tillering and removed it.You guessed it should of left the hump there....LOL.Awsome looking little bow blackhawk.
-
MAN! That thing looks awesome! Well done all around! From design, tiller to finish, it's a knockout! You are the man!
-
D'ya ever read one of those threads where ya look at the pics, start reading comments but keep going back 5, 6, times to check out the pics again before posting?

Cool bow, nice pumpkins!
-
Wow, that is such a cool design and I agree it has fast writen all over it. Very nice work, and a shorty to boot. Love it. Danny
-
Doggone it! i was off hunting the whole week when you posted this one, so I am chiming in late! Awesome bow, blackhawk. I have been eyeing a couple of hophornbeam trees, but have never worked with it before. It must be awesome bow wood. That one was so yellow, I had to do a double take! Really nice bow.
-
I can't believe I missed this 1... I find myself wondering why you're messing around with the second string woods ??? ::) ;)
-
Thanks Howard...next time just bring your computer along so ya don't miss anything..lol
Thanks soy..I find myself wondering the same thing ::)
-
sometimes second string is pretty good, anyone remember Steve Young, Bub
-
Yup bub...he came after the great joe montana..who was better ..lol
And I just found myself playing with secondstring woods again and just finish tillered n shot in a dogwood, and I didn't stop there..I tillered a black locust ready for a string....yeeeeesh...someone give me some osage..I'm gonna have to make several yeller sticks after this poor mans bow wood stint
-
JOE was better, now go make shure you wash all that locust off, dont want to contaminate that yeller gold >:D, Bub
-
Wow, that is an unbelievable bend here! This must be an extraordinary good bowwood. Really extreme.
simson
-
I plan on it bub ;)
Thanks simson ..eastern hophornbeam is a very strong and elastic wood...I'd say its one of the most elastic whitewoods,if not the most imho
-
every time this bow pops up I have to go back and look at the picks! NICE
-
Same here. It's about what I've read that Tim Baker would call the almost perfect bow design.Old blackhawk does his homework don't he.I just wonder how she shoots and at what rate. She's a beaut that's for sure.Come on you modest young man.Has it stopped raining yet?
-
Lol guys..thanks...ed its been spitting on n off today, but I got cabin fever so bad its not stopping me from shooting in two bows at the same time(dogwood n black locust)..me fingers are sore...I haven't shot this one in about a week n a half now(haven't shot any cus of the weather).
