These are two bows I recently made. The first is from an osage branch, sapwood with heartwood. It is 54" ttt, 1" wide, last 8" of limb narrow to 1/4" at nock. It is 32# at 22". Pith was scraped out. Bottom limb had slight natural deflex and top limb had natural reflex. It is basically straight when unstrung and relaxed.

This is the second bow. It is from a 2 1/2" black locust sapling. It is 62" ttt, 1 3/8" at fades, last 14" tapering to 3/8" nocks. It is 50# at 27". The pics don't do the grain justice. It is a cream colored sap wood with dark pink heart wood. It needed a lot of heat treatment on the bottom limb. Enjoy.

Them are some BEAUTIFUL bows...

Very nice! I'm going to have to get some saplings cut for bows.

Wow, those are great! :o :-*
Stunnnig Bows, really, you should post more pics so I can drool at them.

Very nice bows Jimmy, that black locust is stunning in the grain. Have you done osage and locust with sapwood left on before?
I ask because i've always went to heartwood with those two species but love the contrasting look of sap & heart. Post more pics. :)

They look purtty....I gotta couple osage saplings seasoning n a sapwood osage elb nearing completion. I'm sure those look better in person than in your pics
-
Nice job on those. Gotta try some saplings some time. I do have a little crepe mytle that should be ready to work, soon.
-
Sweet! Those both came out very nice.
-
good looking bows buddy.

Thanks for the kind words. I have never done a sap wood/heart wood combo on anything until now. I saw an osage branch bow w/sap wood on this site once and it has haunted me ever since, so I had to make one. Mine is very light poundage and short because it is for my wife. I think those osage branches would make great kids bows. This is the first black locust bow I have made. The contrast is stunning and the pics don't do it justice. I took a lot of pictures but I am never satisfied with the way they look, so I settled on these. I have to say that Druid's bows kind of inspired me to try small diameter wood. The tiller is not perfect by any means on these, but I decided to stop and finish them before I worked them into the wood pile. By the way, that black locust bow actually was in my fire wood pile for a few weeks while still in stave condition. I gave up before I started, but then changed my mind about 3 or 4 times. What is it with this bow making "fever"? It is ridiculous, almost obsessive at times. Every piece of wood has it's own story and unique character, always something new. I guess there are worse addictions.

Well said Jimmy!
And you made two beauties, especially the bl with the flames in it

Nice examples of what you can do with saplings. Osage is a great sapling bow wood IMO. Nothing at all wrong with the sapwood.
-
So much character from sapling and branch bows and you did them both proud.
-
Those are both beauties! I am particularly fond of sapling bows from the get go. Those two are fine examples of why I like them so much. Josh

Both are great looking bows, but i realy love that locust.
-
Cool bows, bags of character, great tiller.

Good work.
I personally like sapling bows.
Have been wanting to try a osage sapling so some time. And have a honey locust drying as we speak.
-
Jimmy, cool bows! How did you get the back so flat? I would've expected it to have a high crown from a branch or sapling.
-
Those are dandy bows indeed. Maybe I need to try a few sapling bows. Nice work Jimmy.
-
Coupe of great lookers. Congrats!
-
Very beautiful bows with a lot of character! Well done.
The "fever" is the singularity of each wooden bow, every selfbow is a being of its own and so we are. Plastic bows are pure monotony, no mutltude at all.
