About a year ago I had to cut down several ash trees that had been damaged by a forest fire. Two of the trees I know are white ash the third was slightly different, the staves have about 2 1/2" of white sapwood and another 2" of brownish heartwood. I've forgotten what the leaves looked like. At first I thought it might be blue ash, now I'm wondering if it might be boxelder (aka ash-leaf maple). The wood is from north Missouri. Thanks.

Box Elder doesn't tend to have a trunk like an Ash. It often leans a bit and branches lower down. You will generally find it growing in clumps. It has paler leaves and noticeably softer wood. Often the heartwood will have red blood-like streaks in it.

Sorry, don't have any way of posting pics at the moment. This wood is definately hard wood and doesn't have red streaks--probably not boxelder. Thanks
