I have never tried a sleeve style take down and thought it was time.I grabbed a set of sisters my buddy Marty gave me last January. They have a nice early/late ratio and decent rings for a stump split. I wanted to try a new profile as well so I whipped up a new caul to try. So far so good. I used 5 ton epoxy and I will let it rest over night. I plan on adding tip overlays and getting it tillered and shooting tomorrow. These sleeves are almost cheatin' their so easy.... ;)

Looks great PD. You sure can whip up a bow fast...nice skill to have. Anxious to see that one finished up and shooting.

lookin' good so far pearlie, , bub

Lookin good pd. Never had the urge to try a takedown myself but Im sure I will someday. Im sure yours will turn out great.
-
That one is lookin might fine, Chris! Nice curves, for sure!! :)
-
Looks good Pearly. A take down is on my bucket list of bows.
-
It aint a bow yet, I haven't seen a string on it! ;)
-
Pearly that's a beauty in the works.. You make it look so darn easy.. Can't wait to see more..
Cipriano

PD, do you take all the snaky out?
-
I bet that shinto works great for shaping the billets to those sleeves. I love my Shinto.
-
I love the idea of a takedown bow for out of state hunting. I'll be following this one closely. Looking good PD! :)

Looking good pal...ya done yet :P ill be expecting to see it bent over by the end of the day. ;) I remember that set of billets Marty gave ya like it was yest...
-

Just the opposite. I only manipulate it enough to line up. The rest of the life stays in it.
-

Nowhere did I call it a bow yet smarty!..............but it wont be long now...

For the record this is a large sleeve set. Its big and quite heavy. I am 6' 2" 210# with very large mits and it JUST fits me enought to be comfy. I suggest the small sleeve for nearly everybody that may want to try one. The mating of the two was easier than I have read as well. If I spent an hour total fitting them I would be suprised. Thanks guys
-
Very cool! Can't wait to see it finished.

This is the bit that puts me off trying. Any tips PD? as you seem to have nailed it first time.

Looks really cool. Can't wait to see it finished. Always thought it would be fun to try one.

Start with the flattest back you can find. Get the 2" your inserting squared up perfectly to that flat back. That ensures the sleeve and bow are on the same plane and not twisted. After its squared up stand the sleeve on the end and line it up perfectly with your eyes by looking down on it directly overtop. Trace around it and rasp your way to a good fit. A 1" x 18" sanding belt helped me keep the shape and do the the dirty work nice. My Shinto worked its magic (as usual) on the rest. Just keep thinking about what will be afffected later from what your doing now. Keep in mind this is my first try and only my opinion on how to do it.

Pearl
Glad to see this. I am working on one myself. This will help out for sure. Thanks for sharing. Dean

I got this far and have to wait a bit. My epoxy still needs to set up harder. I havent flexed it, but I can smell it. It seems when epoxy smells, its not hard. So Im messing with my tip overlays in the meanwhile. They are from a shed my son found last spring. Being as beefy as it is, I chose to cut a very narrow shelf in. I will add leather later on to further push it out. You can really see the "sister" in these billets now.
-
Sweet set up! Definitely on my list of thing to try. Nice and clean work as always!
-
Man Pearl, I love seeing your work.
-
Come one ya big lumberjack, get that thing a bendin' ;D
-
Here are a few pics of the antler overlays. These are the sheds my son found last spring when we where out shooting leaves. The beefier tip is the lower. I figured since its always stuffed in the ground, stuffed into my boot toe or stuffed in a tree stand grate I may as well make it stronger, so I did.
-
She sure is lookin sweet!! I can't wait to see her all finished up! :P
-
Come on..where are those full draw pics >:( :P

Saw your first post late last night, went to make a sandwich and now your almost done with it? Give me some of whatever your on man. :D

Very nice. I think I must build a bow like this. :-)
-
my next project will likely be a sleeve take down with a nice pair of yew billets I have sitting around. I'm watching this with interest. Looks good so far PD.
Where'd you get you sleeves from? any recommendations?
-
Weylin I made a swap on here for the set. 3 Rivers sells them I know.
-
I'm glad you're doing this pearl! A buddy of mine gave me a sleeve set just like yours just the other day. I got a lot of irons in the fire bow wise but a take down is next on my list. Yours is lookin mighty fine there feller!
-
If your like all guitfiddle players you have ape hands right? I bet that size large sleeve set will fit your grippers pretty decent Will (singer/song writer) Harrison.
-
Looks good PD!
I started one a while back but haven't worked on it for probably 3 months. Messed it up a bit with the sleeve fit as I didn't leave extra wood around the sides and belly next to the sleeve. It's good and solid but the limbs at the riser top are narrower than the bottom by the difference of sleeve dimensions. Hoping it won't cause me tiller problems.
My thinking was the wood wasn't as dry as it needed to be so I hung it on the wall to cure. It should now be ready to work some.
-
Looking very nice, Pearly! I have the billets, just need the time and money for the rest. HaHa. (Damn day job)

Fred I suggest aligning the limb and sleeve to your tastes. Then tape off the bottom as I did and fill it up with epoxy. It will fill any any gaps you have and hold the billet solid as a rock. I tapped my sleeve very lightly with a hammer and I could see bubbles forming so I knew my epoxy was flowing down in the slim spots the wood didnt fill up. Im sure it would work for you as well.
-
You definitely hit a cord with this build! I'm already thinkin about a set of sleeves myself. Now I gotta go find some billets. Shouldn't be hard to do, I usually set the short stuff aside anyway. Keep pluggin man, we want to see her finished!

-
Hey... when you get this done, can you ship it to my house?? I'll need to test fire it!
-
It needs sanding and sealing, but here it is. I finished it 50 @ 27. The bow can be drawn to 29" no problems. Its 64" ntn and a solid 1 5/8" wide. It was fun and something to do on Thanksgiving break besides eat, and its a nice conversation piece if anything. I will toss up some full draw pics when Im done sealing and gripping it.
-
Looks great PD.
I'm amazed at how fast you can work wood into a truly fine weapon. Can't wait to see that baby bend.
Greg
-
Looks great Pearly. She has a nice braced profile. I bet the FD is even sweeter.
-
Looks great!!!
If my VM two piece I'm working on turns out half as nice I'll be happy ;D
-

You know me....picky, picky, picky. Im my own worst critic. Its a good shooting osage flatbow. Took on very little set so far, maybe an inch or so.
-
Nice job. It would take me that long just to do the handle. And I can't play the drums either.

Well..once ya figure out how to make a wood bow shoot faster and more accurately than today's modern compounds lemme know so you can show me how to make one..lol
-
conversation piece, what?i think it looks great Chris.send it my way and we can have a conversation about it.you make good bows man.quit being so hard on yourself brother.

Thanks all. Im not hating this bow or anything like that, its a fine bow. Im not sure how much I like the physical weight is my only gripe. The lower half with the brass sleeeve weighs 15 oz. My digital scale doesnt go high enough to measure the upper limb with the steel sleeve. My guess is the whole bow is in the mid/upper 2#'s range. Most osage bows are a pound or so.
-
I have built a few of them and I like the physical weight, makes them pretty stable for me. :)
Pappy
-
I think that mass in the middle of a bow is no big deal. Sweet one btw.

I will shoot a few hundred arrows through it, who knows? It may end up on the Post looking for a new home?
Thanks for all the kind words guys, Ill get her finished up in a day or so. Thinking about a good ol' Tru Oil finish. I have urethane dipped the last dozen bows or so and kind of miss the smell of Tru Oil in my shop.
-
NOW its a bow!   and a nice looking one at that!
-
It may end up on the Post looking for a new home?
How about I save you some time and just PM you my address :)

Thanks for posting PD. You've got me motivated so I'll post some pics and get started on it again this week>>>Fred

-
Ooooooooooooh yeah! :o
-
Wow PD!!! That looks like it made the hunting bow category to me. I'd have a hard time letting go of anything that nice. I keep looking on the wall at the one I started but keep getting sidetracked.
-
Sweet! Awesome job on that one!

If we're being honest? I think "Pappy" profiled bows are thee best to look at. Mmmmm, thats what Im talking about. Will's carry that same profile and its smoother than butta'.

Pearl, your take down looks great. Well done..

Nicely done PD, looks killer to me. Really like the looks of it leaning against that tree on the edge of the woods ready to be strung and taken out on a hunt. Sweet bow all around!
Greg

Beautiful bend on that bow, and a take-down to boot. I need to start drinking mountain dew when I am working on that yeller wood...it seems to be some sort of a magic formula.
