Title: Wood haul, vine maple, ocean spray and yew
Post by: Carson (CMB) on December 05, 2012, 08:58:07 pm
I thought I would post some pics of my bounty from the other day.  I went to go see if I could find a blacktail for the freezer, but I just ended up coming home with more bow wood.

I was looking to stock up on vine maple kids staves, but ended up finding some yew.  It was low-elevation but it had decent ring count.  I also found some of the nicest ocean spray I have laid my eyes on...too bad, I wont be able to touch it for another year.

Sweet score, bud.  8) I'm sure the wife will be just as happy with another pile of wood in the garage as she would be with some meat in the freezer.  ;)

Thats a big haul Carson, do you go hunting with a pack mule in tow? That looks like some fine bow wood and should keep you busy for a while. Where I hunt I can't cut trees for risk of trouble but arrow shoot shafts are easy to get, arrow wood viburnum grows like a weed there and can be put in my quiver with out to much risk of being caught >:D I look at it as weed control ;)

Blackhawk, I believe you.  I have a hard time focusing on game when staves are whispering out to me at every turn.

Thanks Weylin, as you would guess she wasn't real excited, but that evening she got to go to an auction and haul home some piece of furniture we don't have room for, because it was a really good deal.  I guess we are even?

Brian, I live in Salem,OR.  This was from the upper Luckiamute.

Badly Bent, I never make it very far from the road ::) Our state forests are pretty lenient on special forest products.  Arrow wood... that is just pruning  >:D

Good haul. Nothing like a pile of future wood stashed away.  Do you have any POC up your way?

I love me PNW woods.
I just brought a TON of ocean spray back from my stash in P-Town. Pipe straight 3" staves. ...
Now that's an inferior bow wood....

For the OS you can rip (chop) it in half to expose the pith. Dries much faster, albeit still slow-ish.
But at least you wont need to worry about the heinous checking.

My elk excursions more often than not, morphed into bow wood excursions. I try to be quite when am after those wily black tails though.

Shaun,
The town of PO is just a bit SW of CMBs 20....

Blackhawk, i dont think i would have that problem because even though i stare at every tree i see that isnt doug fir or what not, i dont think there would be enough trees where i would be hunting to be distracted by a tree(the ones of interest anyway)

Nice staves Carson.   "Went hunting- came home with staves",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,now that you have become completely infected what are your plans >:D   A few years ago Lulyn and I were out on a late hunt when we stubled upon a very nice patch of yew. She got a little upset with me because I spent the next hour walking around marking the GPS locations  :o I think her words wer something like "You make think you have died and gone to yew heaven. but I'm still hunting here!"

Thanks guys.  Dictionary, I thought Kid's staves were pretty self explanatory.  It is a stave for a kids bow.  Is there a joke I am missing?

POC grows on the southern Oregon coast, several hours from where I live.  I might make a trip down there someday for arrow wood.  It is an absolutely georgeous part of the world.

Keenan, well I am actually up to something.  I have started a small archery business.  Echo Archery (EchoArchery.com (http://EchoArchery.com))  I am still working on the website, so there are some obvious problems with it, but any feedback from you guys would be appreciated.  And yes, I am now a paid advertiser in PA mag, so I can post the direct link.

Bryce, I passed on the cascara this time.  There just wasn't much.  I have another spot that abounds with cascara.

Aaron, on the ocean spray, I used two coats of PVA (aka Elmers school glue) on the ends the day I got them home, and then coated the entire stave with some waterborne polyurethane this morning.  I need to make it up that way.  I haven't been to the coast in a long time.  A nice thing about claming is there is aren't any trees around to compete for your attention.  ;D

I like the heartwood of cascara. Smells like peaches and makes a better bow :)

Looks like you also got a few Scotchbroom staves in that bunch in the second pic. I recognize the green bark and the chocolate heartwood.

randman, there are a couple scotch brrom pieces in there too.  Good eye.  One longer one, possibly a bow in there, the other were large diameter but short. Thinking tool handles for those.

Nah i was asking because i thought you chose your staves based on their size or something for kids bows. Like smaller size peices of wood can only make kids bows or something.

Nice haul of good looking wood. I admit to getting distracted while hunting my self.
Guess that's why it's called "bow hunting" eh..? ;)

Paul, I think you are on to something. I am going to use that now as code for stave collecting.  I am going bow hunting honey, wont be back til supper.  >:D

Thanks Keenan.  I am glad you like that wax.  I need to get a lot more bows up on there.  I should have a few more finished up the next couple of weeks.  I did some more nocks with that sheep horn and they look pretty neat, I can't wait to get that bow finished and posted up on here.

Zion, that Ocean spray is dense stuff.  I love what you have done with OS.  I am almost done with a OS bow that I heat treated over coals.  Heat treating that stuff turns it into scraper dulling rock!

Bryce, that is pretty awesome! Your grandma knows good medicine!

Dictionary, sorry you had to spell it out for me.  I did get some staves so small they would only make a kid bow.  But now you got me wondering just what I get out of one of those 1" diam 35" VM staves.  Hmmm, I bet a horn lamination on the back of the limbs would work great with that tension crazy VM.
