We have all had staves that we were intimidated by, or was just to much work, or just not sure if a bow is possible. So, the staves sits in the corner. In an effort to bring these staves to light, give them some hope, let's see those staves! Bring em back front and center, post them and make bows out of them. Feel free to post all your progress on here as we try for making bows of them. Points for the worst stave attempted.
-
Now we're talking... the worst stave the corner competition >:D I'll take some pics when I get home I'm in haha!
-
Here's mine. It's also my build along stave :)

Here is the one that I have had in the corner for a couple of years now. I will have to rework my tillering tree to even get it on there to pull on it. Could have sold it several times but I will give it a go someday. It has been a real conversation piece to say the least. Dean
-
Several times Dean? I guess there is no use for me to beg then! Someday Im going to trip over a perfect stave like that. Until then I will trudge along with straight pieces.
-
Dean, you need to do a build along with that stave...
-
Roy
If you guys talk me into it we will give it a try on a build along. It does have several issues though. Dean
-
Well Dean if it has several issues, ya could just give it to me.. :) OR ya could do a build along? LOL
-
whoa all of those are corner material,I'm scratching my head too, but can't wait to see what you guys come up with

Wow Dean has an amazing beautiful piece of wood... I'm sure you hear that all the time >:D
-
Soy, that just wasn't right. LMAO
Well Dean lets go son, either a build along or put it out for bid:)
I'll start the bidding at $100.00:)
-
EWWWW! so many terrible looking staves! i would be intimidated by every singe one!
-
I've seen Dean's stave in person and watched people fail to get it away from him. Some folks were just plain intimidated by it.
I think you guys who have those wild staves standing in a corner just need to get a wood stove. End of problem. Stove, stave, pretty close association in my mind.

Those are some sweet looking corner pieces guys, beyond my skill level but I sure would like to see the bows they make if you guys can
pull it off. Got me thinking though that maybe I should go to my pile and take a second look. ;D

Well, if you do take another look, bring your camera!

Well I was going to go to 160.... but it looks like Black Hawk may have won
-
I need to go and find some wiggly osage if thats the going rate :o
-
Some of you probably recall this stave i recently attempted a build-a-long on. You might also recall that it got off to a very bad start. ::). I haven't given up on it, but it is going back to the corner until I get my nerve up.

Dean, that is a wicked stave. Make Blackhawk stand by his bid. >:D
-
Oh come on cmb, this thread is for pulling the staves out of the corner...
-
I can't say that I blame you that 1 has me scared just from looking at the pictures ;D
-
I don't have any staves that I avoid really. If an unruly stave shows up in my stash, I give it to Soy! >:D. That guy will try anything! ::) Josh
-
I had a snakey, lumpy and knotty piece of Vine Maple I traded a piece of Beech with John Strunk about 15 years ago. After roughing it out, it got stuck in the corner and forgoten (it was a nightmare). I came upon it a couple of months ago, I gave it to Wirwicki - He can have the challenge now >:D Bob

I was going to bid $999.99 but I see that I've already been out bid... Oh Well... >:D
...at least with BH it has a chance of becoming a bow one day!

Alright guys we will try a build along with that stave. I will wait until we get some milder weather here in Illinois before I start on it. My shop is not insulated . We will get a warm spell here sometime this winter and we will give it a go. You guys can keep your money. Dean

I saw a stave like that go for about 400 or maybe 500 dollars on ebay. Honestly.
-
so Blackhawk wasnt kidding when he put up 1000. needed to scare everybody away so he could have it ::)
-
Sleek, you have a "new" crooked stave on the way, should arrive on Monday, the 31st. Lots of checks, borer holes and bends. Should fit pretty well in this thread. Hope it meets your expectation for challenging wood. ;) Better yet, hope it makes a bow or 2.
George

For about two years I've been avoiding a 1.5 inch diameter ocean spray stave with uneven reflex, and some lateral twist. I'll try to post pictures of this bad boy later.
Gabe

500 for a normal ( crooked ) bit of osage? Wow, I'm in the wrong business! Now this thread is really getting exciting with all these nasty staves and potential bows! And now that ol gstone is sending me one of his worst, this is really gonna get interesting! Thanks buddy!
-
You guys are giving me the urge to start cutting away at this perfectly good fence post........if i could only figure out how to get the broken staples out.
-
You leave the staples in there.... and man what a stave! Please get more than one bow of that! And if you get a few staves... lemme get one from you.

Thats one snakey fence post there. It's kinda like looking at a straight stave after downing half a paycheck at the liquor store and/or getting socked in the noggin 2 or 3 times.
-
the only thing i've been avoiding is cleaning the shop, gotta make a path to get the wood and take it outside to work, Bub
-
Wow Turtle, I've seen an awful lot of bodark fence posts and have never seen one with that kind of character. Amazing.
George
-
You leave the staples in there....
Hmm....can i borrow your drawknife? ???
-
Point taken....funny thing is, id let you. My drawknife is very stout, with a high angle edge. Also, those staples are rusted and weak I emagine? Even if not, it would go through them. I would just have to fix the blade later, which is easy. Sounds like you need to throw togeather a sacrificial drawknie out of old lawnmower blade or something....good luck!
-
Not really avoiding, but trying to decide what it will become. I have a primo tollhouse stave from Timo. I'll have to post a pic when I get my laptop back from the computer tech.
-
I have a takedown osage bow that I did not align the limbs to the takedown sleeve very well. I might try to salvage the sleeve for another bow which means I have to get the wood and epoxy out of it.

If the sleeves are metal its easy, just heat them until the epoxy start to smell foul and push the wood out.

I've got one very similar to turtles fence post that I just pulled out the other day. It is on deck for one of my next three bows. Rings are super tight and has a wiggly jiggle all up and down both limbs so it should be a dandy. Danny
-
Well, I have a question. I am soon starting on my two staves, and this will be a drawn out process. However, I wonder, should I go for two bows, or splice the two staves to make one? They are both only 47.5 inches long. I only shoot a 25 inch draw, can shoot 24 comfortably, and dont like bows over 55 lbs. So, bendy handle, 45 lbs at 25 inches, 47 ntn? That's doable right? Or do I need to splice in some tips, or splice the two stave together?
