It seems the older I get the more primitive I like it.  Was at Mike Cook's knapping last week  and he said he plans on being there at least for Saturday.  I am going to try and make it Saturday also BUT first it's on to Pappy's Tennessee classic.  Got that one marked on the calendar also.  They look like they have one heck of a self bow making crew there and I have two that I need some advise on.

Looking forward to Patrick Blank and Mullett giving me a few flint knapping tips.

Thinking about what goes on that has not been mentioned !
We should tell folks about the Canadian War bow Society these folks come every year and are an interesting lot ,those into war bows should not miss this event !
Marshall is a very family friendly event !
The kids enjoy the place and terrorize the neighborhood frogs and snakes what a blast !
There is some vending, but a whole lot of trading and gifting going on !
The club sells some food !
We share lots of food !
Usually some ATLATLs
This year my good friend William Blalock will be back after a few years off to care for his father , William is a good source for learning all kinds of primitive skills !!
He usually sells fire kits and elm bark baskets and such so you should not miss seeing him !
Some of the best flintknappers are there !
some flintknapping supplies on sale !
And most of you know there is about as much bow building going on as is possible  !
Hope to see all of you there !!
Guy

Don't know if anyone will be interested but I've got a charcoal  'oven' made from a two foot long washtub that I use to straighten bamboo for arrows or atlatl darts.  I'm going to bring that and set it up on Saturday for anyone that wants to see how it works or straighten some bamboo...

Not the huge numbers you remember .
The club had some difficulties and there were a few years We did not know if it would be open when we arrived or not  ,but some of us saw this event as important enough to push on and it has survived !
The club were we hold this event is very stable now, but not into archery so no money for advertizement .
We as a group are able to push forward,  and by word of mouth and this forum we have grown the last three or four years !
I don't have numbers , sorry !
We would be glad to have you back and in fact I am glad to see that you are back at this and have missed you , you not being at these events was a loss but we have compensated some what .
Please consider joining in the fun again with us at Marshall !
Since you are going to be at the Classic ask folks there about Marshall !
I am sure you know Gary Davis , and others that would give you their assessment !
Some of the folks that you will see at both events are ( these are their forum names)  Blackhawk ,Matt Wirwiki , Pearl drums, Missel Master, Tom Talley, and of course Me !
Have fun!
Guy

Chris
It is amazing to see how the little ones enjoy this event !
Folks seem to like watching them have fun about as much as having fun them selves!
when a young-en out shoots dad a shout goes up all around and the games really begin !
When a young-en  gets a bow shooting or a point done everyone is super excited and congratulations come from all around !
It is one of the very best parts of these gatherings for sure !
I can't wait for the fun to begin!!
Look out frogs and snakes at Wilder Creek the kids are on there way !!!!

I will be bringing my 14 year old boy with me. My wife and oldest cant go afterall, bums me out. Jacob and I will still have a blast..........talk about gettin out shot Guy? Jake will get me quite often if he knocks the rust off first. The kid can shoot! He is all excited to get camp set up and walk the course 1200-1500 times over the weekend! We will be down by Friday dinner time or so. The massive BL trees around there is enough to make a guy want to go back, never seen locust so big.

I seen plenty of glass kid bows walking around last year Drew. It would take some big kahohnas to bark about a kid carrying a glass bow, I wouldnt listen to it personally. Bring him along and enjoy the weekend.

Kids are exempt in my opinion. We should all be happy they have a bow in thier hands to start with. Adults carrying glass may have a different reaction!

I second that.  I'm most certain there would be nothing said about a kid with a glass bow.  A compound might be stretchin it a bit tho...
Title: Re: Marshall Primitive Archery Rendezvous
Post by: Buckeye Guy on April 13, 2013, 10:15:59 am
Yes the younger kids are exempt from the rule of no fiberglass . !
yes a compound would get you some hassles !
And if there is any nervousness in the child about using his glass bow then just ask around some one probably has a bow for them to use and lots of folks even have them ready and waiting to give away (that child may have their bow before you do), great bunch of folks at this event !!!!! I can't say enough about these folks or this event !!
This is as family friendly event as you will find !
We love all the kids !! the frogs and snakes may have other opinions but we don't ask them for their opinion !
Bring the youngens on !
Are we there yet !!

For those of you who might be interested:  Marshall is the home of Dark Horse Brewery.  A top notch mini-brewery.  They have some national award winning beers.  They have great food and a good brewery tour.  Look them up online.

Might have to consider it. I went to the first couple in '80s and had a blast. Is there a knapping area or just bring your own tarp?

What Pearl said about a tarp but there will be a knapping area which is usually by the practice targets.  I am sure Mike Cook and Clay Wykes are going to be there knapping and Frank Stevens may be there selling rocks.

Thanks Pearl Drum & JEB. I was thinking about which event it was I went to and not sure if this is the one. I do know for a fact it was in Marshall and there was a chain link around the entrance and a block building for concessions restrooms. Sucks getting old! I met guys like Paul Brunner, Comstock, Baker,Hamm and some others. It was definitely early 80's. Anyway, I want to try and make it up this year if time permits.

Well, I'm not an expert bowyer so I can't add much to the bow building part BUT:

1.   I've made a small charcoal 'oven' that I use to straighten bamboo for arrows.  I'm bringing that and will set it up on Saturday (sometime) for people to use (I'm also bringing some straightening tools).

2. I use Japanese stones to sharpen things and will bring them if anyone wants to learn on them.
If you've got stones that are dished and need to be flattened, I'm bringing my flattening kit but am low on 220 wet/dry Emory cloth.

3.  I also have some pine pitch on a stick if people want to trade for it.

Thanks and see folks at Marshall.

Note for any beer drinkers:  Marshall is the home of Dark Horse Brewery, one of the best micro-breweries in Michigan.

I'll try to contribute something to the meal...were probably gonna bring marinade deer steaks, tenderloins,n back straps baby..mmmmm...and maybe something something for the raffle table...

Me and Blake(my 4 year old son) are still working on and chipping away at making his first real bow,n trying to have it finished before we leave so he can shoot it there ;)

For the sat meal we are going to try to get some money together for pulled pork
We will talk it over Thursday and Friday !
Most of the old timers at Marshall don't want to bring food to share they would rather donate money . I thought we would give it a try . If it works out we will turn it into a full fledged hog roast next year !
If not we will go back to just sharing with each other in camp !
I am also open to a boil on Thursday eve. if others want to, I have my 30 gal turkey cooker packed and ready to roll !
In fact almost every thing is packed !
The yard at Wilder creek is mowed and most of the coarse is cleaned up !
Nearly ready to rumble !
Bring some broad heads we are going to blast some of the old 2D targets apart, with a 50-50 shoot for cash ! on the short coarse !
Are We there yet !!

Just got a call from a flintknapper friend who wants to come down to Marshall and set up to sell some points and knives.  He asked if there was a set up fee.

For those in the know: Is there any kind of fee for someone that wants to set up a table to sell arrowheads and flint knives?

If so, how much?

To my right in the last pic is my chumba wumba buddy Marty (OLD TIMBER BOWS). I love him dearly! Bob (Chamookman) has the glasses and brimmed hat and thats Codys brother Landon with the red shirt on. What a blast....I think I had more fun this year(is that possible?)....the whole weekend is nothing but a big highlight...the friends,or should I say family to me ;)...the trading of materials...the making of bows...shooting shooting and more sshooting ;)....the AWESOME dinner on Saturday eve(thanks to all who donated either food, services,or money to make that happen :)....n one of my favorite moments was when pearly,Paul, and I went and shot the course with a bow we made Saturday that was still unsealed and unfinished...Cody came along too but he cheated and used an already sealed finished bow..lol...but we shot our bows in by walking the course n I carried a scraper n sandpaper in my back pocket in case I needed to adjust my tiller...but none of us had too....Paul had a rawhide string on his he made n halfway thru his string broke n he had to borrow one of our bows to finish shooting the course...lol....good times....good times :D

A slew of pics to come soon from me...

Yup, that was fun shooting all three of our new bows at once. Ol' dead eye Paul was knocking em' dead even while switching bows every target. Of course the selection of bows he had to choose from didnt hurt anything. It was a dream weekend for any archer/bowyer/knapper or relaxer.

I had the pleasure of eating chef Pauls fine cuisine all weekend. It was a real treat camping next to him and meeting him. Both of our dads cut meat so we had lots of similar stories to chuckle about, and of course we both have our finicky meatcutters sons taste buds! The meal Saturday night was YUM-FRICKIN'-EEE! Thanks to all the chefs, doanters and set up folks......even that ol' worthless nut from O-H-I-O.

Nice pics, Hawkster!  We sure enjoy camping with your family.  And Wee-wicki had plenty of friends to play with on his toy blanket.

OK Folks, just thought I'd pop in here on this thread and say what a blast the gathering looked like from the pics.  I had one of those "ah ha" moments today as I drove past the road for the meet and realized it was LAST weekend and that I had missed the entire event and a chance to see all the folks I know...can't begin to tell you how disappointed and frustrated I am with myself (since I live a whopping 5 miles from there)  Oh well, live and learn (to put in on my calendar next time)   :'(
