got this piece of ash reduced down ready to sinew, got the dimensions from the drawing that pope made, I'll have to check and see if I adjusted the lengthaccording to Ishi's measuring methods, anyhow once I get the sinew on it will be awhile before I get back to it, Bub(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4076.jpg)

This will be an interesting build to see, keep us posted with some pics as you progress bub. The native american bows are my favorites.
Greg

That's cool Bub. Can't wait to see it done. Ijust laid down some sinew on a little Osage bow today myself.

Sweet. Looks like you and I have similar plans in the next month or so...;)
-
That's lookin nice Bub.Thanks for sharing.
-
yes, tiller looks good so far. we are waiting for the whole story.
How far do you tiller out the bows before sinewing?
Simon
-
i'm kind of excited to soy the two sinewed bows I did before were quite a while ago and while they survived I wasn't happy with the final product
o.k. Matt,
I only make Keebler bows for Keebler elf's rich >:D
sounds good pearlie, you start yours in a month and they might be done at the same time ::)
simson I just wanted to get a good even bend going but i'm no expert on sinewed bows, what do you guy's that sinew bows do, I kinda thought part of the reason of the sinew is protection from breakage so I didn't want to risk tillering it out to far on a short draw , using Ishi's way of measuring it came out 55 1/2" ttt and drawing similar to him I figured 26" draw
-
Cool!!

here is the unbraced and profile pics (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4078.jpg)

Looks good Bub. I have never worked with Ash before so I can't speak with experience about it. I will try to get a good floor tiller before I lay down the sinew when I'm doing it. I don't think you were taking too big of a chance with a 26" draw on a 55" bow IMO. The bow I just put sinew on is 48" and I'm gonna shoot for 26" of draw myself. I reflexed mine while putting the sinew on though. If you haven't put your sinew on yet I recommend reflexing it some with the length of bow you are making.
-
GOOD LUCK BUB, I'm finishing up another ash with a thin Ipe back, for the youngest son-inlaw. I'll post it up soon.
Graylan
-
good luck with that, I haven't ever seen epe used as a backing before
-
Very nice Bub. I like it.
-
Looking good Bubby..... started one a while back but went BOOM!!!
-
good luck with it...hope the sinewing goes well
-
just got some sinew and hide glue in the mail, thank's Matt ;) i'll put it to good use here
-
got a couple of courses of sinew on the bow this afternoon, i'll fill the low spots in a few days and then let it set for a couple of weeks, put about 1 1/2" of reflex in it as well, Bub
-
here she is, gonna sit there for a while now to let the sinew dry, then fill the low spots and waithttp://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4080.jpg

That's some fine work Bub. It will look even better in 24 hrs. I fully believe well laid, smooth sinew is the key to getting all you can from it, right after design of course. Looks like you and I are on the same pace. I added a solid 4" of reflex via reverse bracing. I plan to tighten the tourniquet up to 5-6" in a few weeks and adding one more layer.
-
cool, I knew the only way to keep up was to get my but in gear
-
Are you using leg sinew or back strap sinew, and how many do you think you will use? What are the dimensions of your bows?
Grady
-
i am also going to start one soon.it is looking great and i can't wait to see it finished.
-
That is looking good.
-
leg sinew autologus, don't really know how many had a bunch processed and just got some semi processed and some of that is going on as well
thank's carson, seabass,it's about 1 1/4" at the handle, about 2" mid limb and 1" at the tips, I think I posted it's 55" ttt
-
how did you know i was going to ask that lol.thank you for the info.yours is looking great.
-
well here she is after 8 days cureing, when I applied the sinew it was tight in the first pic and I just kept sliding the blocks down the limbs as they got loose(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4084.jpg)
-
That it looking sweet bub. Dont be scared to slide them blocks a liiiiittle farther....;)
-
don't know how well the ash will do with too much reflex, it's Michigan ash >:D
-
You did temper right?
-
yuppers I tempered it
-
Looking great Bubby. Just right on the reflex. can't wait to see that baby bending. You going to paint, skin or leave sinew bare?
-
Thats looking good, can't wait to see it shooting, thats the hard part, waiting on the sinew to cure. :)
Pappy
-
With the tillering results I've seen on your previous bows I know you'll do a fantastic job on this one.Looking good.Good things do come from those who wait.
-
yuppers I tempered it
Right on bubby, great idea and an essential part of the recipe in my opinion.
-
Looking great Bubby. Just right on the reflex. can't wait to see that baby bending. You going to paint, skin or leave sinew bare?
i'm not shure yeti was kind of doing an Ishi replica and his bows are plain, I don't have any skins that wide but rawhide and some paint maybe, still undecided
thank's Pappy
thank's beadman
the only thing helping time pass is working on some other bows
-
finished filling the low spot's in the sinew and wrapped the tips, more waiting ::)
-
I couldn't wait any longer so I filed in some string nocks andgot her stretched out to 19" on the no brace string, looking good so far(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4098_zps48cd51b1.jpg)
-
That's lovely Bub!
-
Its looking great. I like that style of bow.
-
Nice bub, gonna be a cool bow. ;)
Greg
-
got her drawn out to 24" with a 5 3/8" brace, gotta make a decent string for it, but probably art sinew so it look's right, Bub
-
here's a full draw and brace height pic, 25" and I'm shure will go 26", and shoot's lighnin bolts, she's a fast gal for shure, still have lot's of work to finish, plus I gotta decide if I pretty her up(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/103_4111_zpsc9d47ab9.jpg)

Sweet Bubby.... need to crush up some of that Northern California red rock and put some war paint on that baby!!!
-
That tiller looks great. I bet that thing is fast.
-
Beautiful bow there Bubby.
I used art. sinew on my first bow. It was all I had. It had quit stretching at brace. But a year later, I decided to restring it with B50. It was noticably faster with the b50. Just saying. But, I completely understand your desire for making it as authentic as possible. I believe that bow would make meat if you used a shoe string. :)
-
Great looking tiller Bub. What kind of weight did she come in?
-
That's a sweet short bow there!
-
thank's coaster, i'm thinkin' bout it
thank's OO, it is fast
thank's hedge, art sinew is the same as b-50, it stops stretching
thank's Keenan, I havn't weighed it but it feels every bit of 50-60-#
-
Nice tiller on that shorty bub, way to stretch er' out. Looks like a good shooter that would also be fun to shoot.
Greg
-
Perfect! Do you need my address? >:D
-
it is your draw length isn't it keenan
-
NICE!
-
Well done Bub! That tiller looks spot on ;)
-
Awesome bow. I have been following this one from the beginning and it sure turned out nice. I bet it's fast. I got a sack full of leg sinew that I am gonna have to start processing. Gonna have to try sinew backing one for sure. Great work, as usual bubby.
-
go for it howard, it's a lot of work but worth it, Bub
-
It looks great. I was thinking about doing a sinew backed ash Ishi bow for my trade bow.
Grady
-
it is your draw length isn't it keenan
;D ;D :o
-
Its looking mighty good there bubby. I have yet to do a sinew bow. Maybe some day. danny
-
POW! Looks great Bub. Get her dolled up and lets see her again!
-
Looking good bub. Since its an ishi bow I'd personally wrap some red wool around the handle, finish it off with grease and wax, and twist up a sinew string to make it pure primitive.. ;D
Jon
-
Cool little bow Bub. I shure do like that!
-
thank's pearlie, still have to clean her up a little then put her makeup on
thank's jon, but i'm to lazy to make a REAL sinew string
thank's jonw
-
Oh Bubby, that's cool. You gotta dress her up a bit. It's just screaming for it...
-
Oh that looks good Bubby! I can't wait to see her finished up! Josh
-
Great looking bow. I also want to make a Ishi bow sometime, along with ishi points and an otter skin quiver. I think i'll skip wearing his waredrobe though :P
-
Perfect! Do you need my address? >:D
lol
-
thank's Matt, Gundoc, i'm gonna dress her up a bit
Gaur I thought about the loin cloth, NOBODY needs to see that, Bub
-
Turned out great.Tiller look good and I bet it will spit an arrow. Nice job. :)
Pappy
